The Lost Paris Tapes:

In 1995, the original tapes were bought by a German fan for $10,000.

On 11th March 1971, Jim Morrison arrived in Paris. In Mid June, during his usual walks he found a recording studio on the streets of St. Germain des Pres. He returned on 16th June to listen to a reel to reel of the March 1969 LA Poetry Session. Stepping out for drinks he met 2 American guitarists at the Cafe de Flore, bought them a drink and invited them back to the studio. He's supposed to have told the engineer they were his own band "Jomo And The Smoothies" and paid for an hour of recording.

The warm up, tuning and a very weird version of "Orange County Suite" was recorded on tape. After cutting the tape they left the studio and went seperate ways. Jim wanted to go for more drinks but didn't wanna carry the bag around and risk losing it so he decided to pay his friend Phillipe who lived around the corner a visit.

They shared a few drinks and copied some poetry tapes on cassette. When Jim left he carried the two cassettes but forgot original two reels. One was the poetry tape - the master copy from Elektra Records' archives, and the master of the recording he and the musicians had just made as Jomo And The Smoothies. Phillipe seems to have run after him to return the bag but as Jim was already going down in the lift, he's supposed to have asked Phillipe to keep it till he'd collect it later.

Jim Morrison died 2 weeks later. The bag that was left with Phillipe consisted in addition to the two reels, his Paris Journal, Private photos, and 2 newspaper articles. The bag remained in Phillipe's cupboard till he attend Morrison's 50th Birthday Celebrations in Paris in 1993.

The following notes are from the original torrent:

Sometime during fall of 1996, East Village resident Barry Paddock was walking down 2nd Ave. At 12th Street he spotted a pile of cassette tapes left on top of a garbage dumpster. Curious, he decided to sift through he tapes to see if there was anything worthwhile. Most of the tapes were pre-recorded stuff like the Beastie Boys, which he didn’t particularly care for but one tape he found was a blank tape with a hand written label that read “J. Buckley Stuff”. Barry saved that tape from the trash and took it home.

The quality of this isn’t great but, hey, who’s complaining?!

previously listed as March 4, 1979 but that is not correct since Ultravox played 4 shows in Boston in March 79, 2 on March 3 and 2 more on March 4th. This is likely a day or two before or after that.
2nd show

remaster notes:
This appears to be either a different date or show than listed, since they played 2 shows in Boston on March 3rd and 2 more on the 4th. The BBC broadcast posted a few times before is from one of those shows, and that is an edited version of the show missing about 20 min. this doesn't sound like that show. If it's from Buffalo, it's probably a day or two before or after the listed date. It needed speed correction (again) so I slowed it by 9.5 cents, it needed retracking, since several tracks began with several seconds of applause, and the levels were recorded too high with clipping throughout. (not horribly, but noticably) there were also short (about .005 sec.) gaps at most of the track breaks. not any more. there were also some problems in the right side during some parts of "blue light" (or else the soundman doesn't care much for David Gilmour titles) so I monoized some short sections to cover up the missing sound without ruining it. this was an almost-deleter when I got it. Now it's considerably better, glad I remastered instead of deleted (I can't listen to pepped Ultravox, it just didn't sound like them before). and listening to it as I write this info text, it sounds pretty decent (after 4 tries to get the speed to sound right, this is the only one to get posted) I also cut out a very short section of recorder turn-on noise at the start of track 9 (only about .01 of a second) I think I got the speed right, this Ultravox band has a very distinct tone and sound to them, especially John Foxx. I've heard enough of this tour to know what it should sound like. I wouldn't be able to attempt doing this to a Jack DeJohnette's Directions recording. I think anyone who heard this before will find this more than a little improvement.

This was a project from some years ago, which has been augmented by a couple of shows on Dime. I recorded most of the early ones myself, mainly from a Denon tuner to cassette. Later they were transferred on a Yamaha KX-333 via an ADC and DIO2496, and edited in Soundforge. They are in no particular order - mainly to fill out each CD. There are a few duplicate tracks as different edits were broadcast on different BBC programmes - mainly two of the Glastonbury sets. I do not pretend this is complete, and additions are welcome.

From Wikipedia:
The disc also mentions a film based on the album, directed and "adapted for longform video" by Richard Lowenstein. The 60 minute video, entitled "White City: The Music Movie", was released by Vestron Music Video in 1985 and stars Pete Townshend, Andrew Wilde and Frances Barber. The videotape also features exclusive footage of Pete Townshend discussing the album and film, and the premiere performance of "Night School". That song, in a different form, would be included on Hip-O's 2006 re-release as a bonus track.

Comments:
This 3-DVD set contains the rough footage from what was supposed to be the follow-up to the commercially very successful Exposed. If you've ever wondered what a rock band does when preparing for a tour then it's all here: soundchecks, eating catered food backstage , doing promotion work, discussing details about the show, etc. Although there's is no real pacing to the contents, being raw footage, this is still intriguing and the overall quality is excellent.

SOURCE: unknown
LINEAGE: unknown generation cassette tape > CD-R > EAC wav > Trader's Little Helper flac level 8

NOTES:

This was treed via the Van Morrison trading groups in 2000. I wrote the original liner notes (below) and the artwork was created by Robert Glenn Plotner. The cover photo comes from a photocopy of an original photo loaned to me by Janet "Planet" Minto, which was taken @early 1967.

These songs seem to have been, by the scant bit of fact & fiction surrounding them, recorded sometime between 1964 and 1967. The original source tape may have been sent (so rumored) by Violet Morrison (Van's mother) to a fanclub in Holland (called "His Mysterious Strength", at Van's suggestion) sometime during 1967 (along with notes referring to recording with The Sweet Inspirations in NYC). The overall sound quality of these recordings is, frankly, terrible. But, their historical significance is priceless. The audio generation/history of these recordings is unknown, as is pretty much everything else about them.

"I Was Born To Sing The Blues" (aka "That's All I Know") is in the style of early John Lee Hooker.

"All Night Long" (so titled on the the source tapes) includes backup singers, possibly The Sweet Inspirations, and may be from the first Bang studio sessions (March 28-29, 1967). The standout chorus though sounds more like "Call my name". Whatever the correct title, it does have a "Twist and Shout" style to it, a song that was penned by Bert Berns, thus this is likely also a Berns composition recorded by Van at his suggestion.

"Gloria" (aka "You're the One") may be an early take of that song (which would place it possibly as early as 1964?), but it is difficult to say, let alone to distinguish the lyrics. What can be heard at points throughout, aside from "you're the one", are mentions of "Bo Diddley" (whom Van met in Los Angeles in the first week of August 1966), "do you remember?", "I'm the one", and what sounds like Van spelling out "G-A-M" (though, due to the muddy sound, it could be "G-I-M", as in George Ivan Morrison)..."I'm the one". On the promo interview for "The Healing Game" Van states that Gloria was conceived as "a Muddy Waters / Bo Diddley sort of thing".

"Spanish Rose" is likely a pre-Bang demo (before March 28, 1967), possibly as early as late-1966 when Van was trying to figure out what to do next while cagily stuck in Belfast performing with a hand-picked band dubbed THEM AGAIN.

"Walking In The Queen's Garden" is probably an early version of a song by the same name later recorded in late-1967 by Them (after Van left) on their "Now And Them" album (released 1/68). Jim Armstrong (guitarist with Them from late-1965 through their US tour with Van, and afterwards) explained, "'Walking In The Queen's Garden' is one we used to do with Van. It's based on an old Howlin' Wolf lick." Armstrong has also mentioned that this was a song that Them were practicing during their West Coast US tour during the summer of 1966.

"Harmonica Breakdown" (correct title, if there is a title, unknown) is probably an emulation of Little Walter's style, whom Van had met, and run errands for (to pick up Chinese food), while rooming at a hotel in London during Them's first visit in mid/late-1964. In return, Little Walter showed him some techniques with the harp.

"T.B. Sheets" is, again, likely a pre-Bang demo. 16 minutes of improvisational blues, extremely raw, but from which emerged a notable early studio recording, an early rock genre "death blues" which generated a point of conjecture as to its "inspiration". Some books & articles have zeroed in on this song as stemming from a real-life tragic relationship...there are stories of Van emerging from the BANG studio recordings for this spent & sobbing, all of which Van Morrison denies as fiction.
