Prince drops copyright lawsuit against bloggers accused of sharing concert footage online

Prince has dropped the federal copyright infrignement lawsuit he filed less than two weeks ago seeking $22 million from 22 bloggers who allegedly posted his songs online illegally.

The 55-year-old music legend filed the lawsuit on January 16 in a US federal district court in San Francisco seeking $1 million from each blogger for allegedly distributing concert footage.

The alleged bootleggers had been accused in the lawsuit of using Facebook and Google's Blooger to link to live concert recordings without permission from Prince.

  2. From the outset this copyright stunt seemed really weird, as he was trying to copyright live performances - which I believe is not possible - by referring to the ownership of the content of the songs. Thankfully this workaround never materialized in court, since it would effectively have shut down all legal distribution of ROIO's - but the scheming really seemed to be too silly to work, so I guess they realized that and decided to quit before they would loose and then effectively make ROIO's a legit thing.....so back to basics with ROIO's that are not really legit and not really illegit...

That was probably the whole point in him filing the suit to begin with. He doesn't really want to end up looking like the bad guy in the long run. He just wants the trading to stop. Smart move, really.

    1. "Smart move," that is, if you don't give a $%*@t about your biggest and most committed fans, who are the ones who go to the trouble of finding, downloading & enjoying ROIOs. Instead of bloggers like Asso, why not go after the people trying to make a profit from them -- like the bums who sell CD-Rs on eBay and elsewhere? Those are the people who are profiting at the expense of the artist and on the backs of uber-fans who just want to share their joy with other fans.

REALLY GLAD this seems to get Asso off the hook!

  5. If he's out only for publicity on this one, why not make new music and let that speak for itself, as a real artist would do. Not some stupid shit like this! 1 million for you Prince? Really?? This is like a spat on the face for the fans. It was the fans who got you where you are now stupid fuck.
