Review:
This great two CD set captures the entire Dylan portion of the Toronto show. A mind blowing performance in fantastic soundboard quality (as far as the 1975 technology goes. Of course, it's a bit muddy by today's digital standards). If you are a fan of Rolling Thunder, this is an absolute 'must-have' CD. Any collection, of any size needs at least one RTR tour show. This one would be a wonderful choice. The cover is a wild shot of Dylan in partial face pancake

Lineage : I downloaded this new torrent from the Cooking For The Down Five blog as flac files which listed it as a "complete first generation tape of the KMET FM Radio Broadcast".

02: Sweet Jane (4:54)

CD2 (43:26)
01: A Sheltered Life (10:32)
02: You Wear It So Well (4:58)
03: Claim To Fame (3:01)
04: Vicious Circle (4:29)
05: Walk On The Wild Side (11:17)
06: Coney Island Baby (9:06)

This concert has appeared in at least four guises over time, each with slightly different tracklistings/times:
1. Claim 2 Fame [CD source]
2. Super Golden Radio Shows [CD source]
3. Sweet Lou [LP source]
4. Cassette Source [Gordon L's source!]
In my opinion the sound is very good, and to my ears is better than the Claim 2 Fame CD. It sounds like it could even be the source for that CD as it has extended versions of many songs including the various DJ chat that has been edited out of the Claim 2 Fame CD.
I have made some alterations to this cassette version:
a) I have boosted the left channel (due to drop in level) on Kicks (from 7:13), She's My Best Friend, I'm Waiting For The Man, You Wear It So Well, Claim To Fame, Coney Island Baby (from 1:25).
b) I very slightly gave extra punch to most songs as they sounded slightly thin.
c) I smoothed over some of the joins between tracks (ie this shows that it wasn't taped continuously off the radio) and a couple of drop-outs.
d) I moved the start of some tracks (this, and (c) above, is why the timings are now different to the original blog files).
e) I faded out the ends of both CD's slightly so they didn't end abruptly.
f) I removed Heroin which has been officially released (on Between Thought And Expression boxset).
I have included new artwork as well as including the artwork originally included on the Cooking For The Down Five blog.

Coments on the performance:

The audience is very enthusiastic tonight. There are a lot of fantastic moments in this show, particularly many instances of nice vocal harmonies, like in Somebody To Love and It's Late.

This is the first known instance during a Queen show where Freddie does the show-stopping vocal exchange with the audience during Now I'm Here. Although it is only brief tonight, over the next few years it would be greatly expanded
on.

Before Dreamers Ball, Roger lets out a huge scream. It amuses Freddie a great deal, to the point of asking for another. Boy, does he ever deliver!

The Brian-Roger-John Brighton Rock jam starts off well, but after a few minutes, they seem to be completely out of ideas. Their misguidedness is even more obvious when Roger decides to go into a rather mediocre drum solo. They weren't the greatest improvisationalists, as they were the kind of band who rehearsed to perfection. Still, sometimes Queen could cook, but just not on this night. As for the vocal performance, Freddie's voice is cracking now and then, but he's still dripping with passion throughout.

It was around this time that Freddie started singing a few lines from Fun It off the Jazz LP during the intro of Keep Yourself Alive, something which he'd often do throughout the Jazz tour.

Comments Geetarz:
Interesting intro and early version of Twisting By the Pool and particularly Two Young Lovers - Alan Clark plays wedding music as MK talks about the genesis of the song... Also a neat intro and performance of "Portobello Belle

Comments Pyroman:
Very good audience recording. The sound quality of this recording is remarkably good for the early eighties. Nice Portobello Belle and the rare "It Never Rains". The last part of Private Investigations is missing.

Enlight Note:
The second show from the "Love over Gold" Tour. One of my favourites , like most shows at the start of a new tour. During "Expresso Love" Mark changes the lyrics , his guitar seems out of tune , and he sings (at 1:17min) "saying hey mister,... get me another guitar,.... i've gotta play another guitar sometimes...". And later (at 2:00 min):
"Feels so good.....(long pause)..... feels so good..it's in tune..." .

I really don't know much about this video but it doesn't appear to be up here so I thought people may be interested. I picked up the DVD on Bleeker Street in New York City. It has a soundboard audio source and was apparently a TV broadcast. The songs are tracked and there is a menu. The intro to Handsome Devil is cut. I'm including the original artwork. There are video edits that remind me of the 80's in all it's cheesy glory. If you're a Smiths fan you'll want it. If you're a Moz fan, hey, he sticks his tongue out and exposes a nipple or two.

To put an end to a very busy year, the Smiths returned to Paris for a one-off concert. This is often credited as having taken place in the Parisian suburb of Versailles, but the venue was actually a hall at the Parc Des Expositions, near the Porte de Versailles in the south of Paris. The setlist was similar to the ones from the recent Irish dates, minus "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" and "Jeane". All five then-unreleased songs that would appear two months later on "Meat Is Murder" as well as recent single tracks "William, It Was Really Nothing", "How Soon Is Now?" and "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" were performed.

The concert went down well, but perhaps because the Smiths were not as known in France as in the UK, the audience took some time to warm up to the band. After the opener "William, It Was Really Nothing", Morrissey greeted the crowd "Thank you we are the Smiths and we come from England... what?". He wasn't as talkative in France as he was in England or Ireland, probably because of the language barrier. At the end of "Nowhere Fast" he lied on the floor to illustrate the song's final line "I'd lie down and die". The next song on the programme was then introduced "Thank you, this is a song called 'Reel Around The Fountain'."

After "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", Morrissey thanked the audience and introduced the next song: "Thank you... thank you, you're very kind, thank you... This is a song called 'How Soon Is Now'." Near the end of "Still Ill" he fell on the floor and writhed. The following song was then introduced "This is a new song which you don't know, it's called 'Rusholme Ruffians'." It segued into "This Charming Man" the way it always did since its live inception in September. This was to be the last of the few times this medley was performed.

During the bass solo at the end of "Barbarism Begins At Home" Johnny, who had nothing to do, pretended to yawn and started dancing along while Morrissey was 'oscillating wildly' near him, arm flying everywhere. Near the end of a very spirited "Hand In Glove", Morrissey removed his shirt gradually, swung it around for a short while then threw it in the crowd. He said "Goodbye... thank you... we love you..." and the Smiths left stage. They were soon called back and Morrissey thanked the audience "Thank you France, we didn't expect this, thank you". The first encore consisted of a playful "What Difference Does It Make?" with added "Ba-bada-bada" and "Handsome Devil". The band was then asked to do a second encore, and they went for "Miserable Lie" after thanking the French again for their welcome: "What could we say? Thank you..."

This concert was recorded and broadcast on television.
The image quality is good, but this was filmed from one main angle and very few variations. There is also a lot of annoying video effects that can't really be blamed on the fact that it was the 1980s. It is only one of two visual documents for the Smiths in 1984 so despite all this, still very interesting to watch on bootleg video or DVD.

Drummer Ginger Baker may be best known for his work with Cream and Blind Faith but he has never stayed within the rock orbit. He was played with avant artistes such as Bill Laswell, and jazz stalwarts such as Art Blakey, Charlie Haden and Fela Kuti.

Music writer George Varga remembers this Solana Beach gig:

In 1988, former Cream drummer Ginger Baker gave his first San Diego area performance in 20 years at the Belly Up. It was a clumsy, bumbling “classic-rock” set better suited for the soundtrack to a bad acid trip. “We’ve got some problems up here,” bassist Tim Bogert said, after Baker nearly took out an audience member’s eye by smashing off the wing nut from one of his cymbal stands with a drum stick.

The set may be loose but it’s far from being the ramshackle show it has been made out to be. For instance, ignore the first 3:21 mins (”teething” problems?) of Aiko Biaye and the track ends up being a scorching display. And especially for Cream and Blind Faith fans, this is a slice of rock history.

Comments:
This is the first date of the brief (two-week) Japanese tour George Harrison undertook with Eric Clapton and his touring band in late 1991; as nearly everyone knows, this would mark his final series of live appearances aside from a charity gig in London a few months later. The performance is solid throughout; the band sounded well-rehearsed and professional and based on this recording one could never sense George's well-known aversion to performing live. The setlist is identical throughout the tour, and a great mix of Beatles and solo material (with a brief EC showcase in the middle of the set). For those who have never heard one of these shows, it's worth picking up.

The recording is pretty good -- nearly all of the Japanese recordings are great -- and Mid Valley did a good job with this release. The only flaw is that there is a fair amount of crowd noise evident between songs -- to be honest, I don't know if the audience mars any of the music itself, but the taper was apparently in the midst of an enthusiastic crowd that cheered a lot between songs. From what I've heard, the audience shouldn't interfere with one's enjoyment of the show.

Notes:
This show is classic Zevon with lots of banter between songs. The levels were kind of all over so I balanced levels. There are a couple of places between songs where mics are switched and I matched the levels to make them less noticeable although you can hear the change in sound. Also the first few notes of the second set were missed.
