Here's a really fabulous "FM" recording of Talking Heads from September 16, 1978. I don't have much information about this recording. Perhaps another Planet Rocker does. Anyone? You will notice that the original uploader notes that this comes from KSAN reels. My guess is, based on the original text file, that this was recorded directly from the reels rather than being an FM broadcast recording, but I'm only guessing. That's why I've marked this as "Pre-FM," even though, I think, that's not technically correct.

Funny story. I'd been living WAY out in rural SW Washington state. How far out? Far enough that I'd been heating and cooking with wood for nearly a decade! So, shortly after moving to Seattle my friend LouAnn asked me if I'd like to go see a movie. "What movie?" I asked. She said "Stop Making Sense." I told her I'd never heard of it. She said it was a concert film by a band called Talking Heads. Yikes! I told her that I really didn't think so as there was "simply no way in hell I'd like a band with a name like that!" (Yes, I was that dim! Some would say I still am…) She said SHE'D pay because she thought I'd really like both the band and the movie. A woman taking ME to a movie? Hell yes I went! Bottom line: I could not believe how great they were! Lou left after one showing. Me? I stayed to watch it again! Took a bus home. I probably would have stayed for a third showing if there would have been one!

This is not a concert and contains more talk than music. A Korg and Ensoniq corporate event type thing. Picture quality is good, sound has some drop-out issues around the 33 minute mark, otherwise good to very good. Here Keith is chatting about his operation, reading from his autobiography and playing a few tunes in front of an audience of a couple of hundred people. It is 'pro-shot' in that there are several not-hand-held cameras. I don't think this was ever broadcast on TV. If anyone can shed more light on any shows that Keith did while recovering from his operation, or this event, please let us know.

For those who don't recall, on the Stones' "40 Licks" tour in 2002-03 they took the unique approach of playing multiple venues of varying sizes in selected cities. The largest cities in each country would typically get performances in a stadium (where they would play their greatest-hits set), an arena (which would feature primarily "hits" with a handful of deep tracks), and a club or small theater. The latter were the most fun of the tour, because the Stones essentially picked a setlist to entertain themselves -- these shows often featured guests and unique performances of rarely-played songs.

My favorites of the 2002-03 club shows were Stockholm and Chicago; and the nod may go to the latter. This show has a great setlist, first-ever performances of songs, special guests, and an inspired performance. If you are a Stones fan and don't have this recording, this is a must-have.

There are at least 2 other common sources of this show, but I like this one best. A friend recorded this with CSB mikes about 25 feet back on the right side, and the sound was perfect. The crowd noise is minimal (except when Bono came onstage unexpectedly).

One wart: After EQ'ing, breaking tracks, burning it, and deleting the originals, I found one spot of brief diginoise -- during the break between "Start Me Up" and "Live With Me" (tracks 2 and 3 on disc 1). this is a "sterile" sounboard recording. There is no real crowd noise present in the recording, so it goes almost silent between tracks, you can hear a bit of clapping. I am not a big specialist in BF recordings but I can say that this could be one of the best unofficial recordings of his up to date. I took this tape from the local torrent site and simply added info. So all credits go to drusilla2. According to him "the first 4 tracks were corrupted hence are not shared". I am amazed at how this guy shares his recordings since it is evident he was working with or simply was the soundguy @ the gig and if i'm not mistaken such recordings are out of question among sound engineers. They are recorded for the band but never shared. On the other handside I am sure this one and Elton John recording definitely made a lot of people happy. Unfortunately they are most likely to be sold by bootleg-selling sc*m and there's nothing we can do about it.
