Notes:
12x12 inch boxed set, hand-numbered limited edition of 500 copies, 200 more reissued in 1996.
Includes extensive liner notes by Dr. Rawk and Michelle Yow, and a sticker. 16 added tracks compared with LP version, unfortunately the sound is overall inferior compared to the vinyl set.

Fierce Pup VU fanzine says: "The legendary Searchin' for my Mainline was issued in a 3 disc box. The vinyl edition of this set, which features all live tracks from '66 to '86, has long been out of print. It was touted by many as the definitive VU boot. Its re-emergence on CD allows fans the opportunity to own some of the wildest, live VU ever recorded and a few oddities. While digital technology improves on the quality of the original vinyl, we're still dealing with some lo-fi sources here so don't expect miracles. The CDs' extented recording time permits the addition of many tracks not on the vinyl edition, although there is a glaring omission: Moe and Jonathan's I'm Sticking With You."

This bootleg was compiled from the best available raw sources and was not stolen from other people's compilations. The audio was remastered from an audiophile standpoint. Mono material appears in true mono. There was no additional echo or stereo ambience added. Noise reduction was not used on any material. Hiss was often reduced through equalization. I have tried to present the best sonic experience possible without compromising the integrity of the source material at hand. The final result is the ultimate Syd bootleg. Even hardcore fans should be able to find something worthwhile within.

This second version from August 2012 has new sonic upgrades of Tracks 03, 09, 12, 13, 14 & 15. The intro to Track 01 has been patched with missing material from an inferior source. Tracks 10 & 11 have also had additional speed correction.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - 1967-xx-xx - First LP acetate (STU/FLAC)

(Studio FLAC)

Quicksilver Messenger Service 1967-xx-xx First LP acetate (FLAC)

01 Pride Of Man
02 Light Your Windows
03 I Hear You Knockin'
04 Back Door Man
05 Dino's Song
06 The Fool

In late summer 1967, QMS tries to do their album, with Harvey Brooks producing. They cut an acetate (only 150 ever made, and none of it offically issued, remains very rare) with him. Harvey did a more pop approach to the music, and sometimes added the Electric Flag horns on a few tracks. David Freiberg talked about it, in an interview with John Barthel, in 1997...

JB: ...I know that there are apparently, at least two versions of the first Quicksilver album. One that was recorded down in LA…

DF: Yeah, we did one with Harvey Brooks. We wanted Nick because we knew Nick Gravenites, but he didn’t feel confident enough. And he was playing with the Electric Flag, and Harvey was an experienced producer. So we went down…we did it with Harvey, and I think "The Fool" was lined out. Gary played 12 string first and we overdubbed everything else. I think we actually ended up using a "little bit" of that in the actual "Fool."

JB: There were some horns on some of the recordings.

DF: "Pride of Man". Well it WAS the Electric flag horns that were recorded up here. I think it was just "Pride of Man".

JB: Up here… being in San Francisco?

DF: Yeah, we overdubbed that up here. That was from the first recording, so we DID use that and there were some horns on one other song...but it didn’t make it unto the album...I don’t think. But it’s on the unreleased album. I think there’s something...but I can’t recall. Duh! [laughs]

JB: I have copies of it myself and I don’t remember which ones have horns in them...

DF: And then Harvey mixed it and said "This is it." Everybody listened to it and said "Not it, Harvey!" [laughing] "Uh, I think we’d better re-do some stuff." So we came back up and played all the things live for a few months, and practiced like we wanted to. Then went back in with Nick and Pete Welding and re-did what we needed to re-do, and that’s how it went… pretty well. Actually...I "still" think it was pretty good.

Notes:
Very good Laser Disc transfer. Robert Fripp talks in his measured tone about his musical journey including his New Standard Tuning and working with The League of Crafty Guitarists. For more info : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_standard_tuning I have the utmost respect for Fripp, probably the most intelligent person in the music business (when he chooses to operate within that forum) but watching this leaves me a little baffled.

20. KSAN station promo's from Dan Hicks

Received this CD in trade from my friend Rick many years ago. A nice sounding (but slightly hissy) stereo broadcast. Great performance but there were so many technical issues with the sound. Been waiting and watching for years’ looking for another copy to appear and nothing has. So it was Audacity, the mouse button and my headphones. Some patches were required as there were gaps and skips that interrupted the music. Many editing sessions later I had cleaned up the vast majority of these distracting noises and gaps. The balance was all over the place and I adjusted the channel amplitudes to keep the audio center more consistent. The source reels degraded towards the end of the second set. Tape bleed-thru and some break up on the last track is still audible (but not bad). No equalization or noise reduction has been applied during this clean up.

Superb studio quality demos for the album Cyborg. This is arguably the best sounding early Schulze boot available. It's certainly the best sounding boot by him that I've ever heard. (however, the short Radio Bremen addendum is only of FM quality)

Here is the other half of the tape from the Whiskey show. As mentioned the sound quality is a lot better. The taper must have cut out commercials or station identifcation as the tunes end with a silent gap. I edited most of them out to flow better. A solid reprensentation of early America.
