Recorded at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City in June of 1971,this is John just jamming on his acoustic guitar. Most of the tracks that John grew up with in the 1950's appear on this CD including many of John's favorite songs by Buddy Holly. The track list above is according to the songs that are listed on the album cover, however a few more tracks are interspread in the album which don't appear on the album track list, especially at the end of the CD.My CD tracks at 14 actual songs.Included in this track list would be a short Duane Eddy take at the begining of the disc. There is a take of Buddy Holly's Heartbeat,Also at the end, after Peggy Sue,John sings Maybe Baby (an excellent acoustic version),Mailman bring me no more blues (although Yoko is heard on the phone over this track),Rave On (another excellent Buddy Holly cover version, and the CD ends with a little instrument number with John saying,"when I count to three we just get up and run out".At that point the CD ends. The so!ng New York City is listed in the track listing, but I've listened to this cd a number of times and I don't hear New York City on track 5,it just sounds like a bit of guitar tuning before he goes into Wake up Little Susie to me.The sound on this CD is excellent and there are a few songs presented here that are the only known versions ever recoreded by John. This Cd can in my opinion be viewed as John's Rock n' Roll album circa 1971.It is obvious that when out of the spotlight he always reverted back to the Rock n' Roll songs of his youth.I enjoy this CD very much, and rate it a 9 because the sound is excellent and the selection of songs is also excellent. This is a very enjoyable John Lennon CD,and I would recommend it to anyone interested in hearing John doing acoustic versions of the roots of Rock n' Roll.

Review by: TraceElement On 10 Jun 2002 at 12:05 CET
Not the most significant insight into JOHN's work, or filled with unrecorded demos, etc. BUT, the great thing about this recording, is first of all, it is very clean. The overall feel, is that you and John are hanging out together in his living room. It's evening, and you and John just shared a spliff, altho Yoko took a couple of hits. John pulls out his guitar, and starts to fool around, playing different songs, just for you and him. Yoko is by, and for the most part, is just quite. The phone rings, and the casual vibe is just reinforced by this, not interrupted. This is a very intimate slice of life recording. A "LET IT BE" for a solo John, without the fights.Fun to listen to, and you are NOT going to hear these songs on a million other bootlegs. If you feel like stopping by to visit JOHN, and listen to him share with you his love of old rock and roll, on acoustic guitar, go for it. All i am saying, is give "CLOCK" a chance.

Review by: shoegazer On 20 Jun 2003 at 20:48 CET
"Clock" is allegedly the soundtrack of a film which John and Yoko shot during a stay at the St. Regis Hotel in '71. They hadn't yet moved into the West Village. I seem to remember reading that, visually, the film consists mainly of a clock, like a Warhol film, with John and Yoko off screen. It would be nice to think there was a Pennebaker-style film out there of this stuff with shots of John playing guitar, while Yoko answers the phone. There's at least two instances on the cd where John answers the phone in a put-on voice. "Que pasa?? Whosis please, que pasa?" Some black and white footage surfaced back in '99, sold to a couple of collectors by Tony Cox, with John sporting a shaved head. Stills lifted from that footage show John in bed, playing a guitar, and Yoko beside him, perhaps on the phone. Maybe this is "Clock", however, the shaved head leads one to believe the footage may date back to 1970, around the time of "Instant Karma". Anyway, "Clock" is a great cd. I keep collecting Lennon boots hoping they'll all be like this one. Excellent sound quality, stripped down, a guy and a guitar, Lennon unplugged, spontaneous, personal, full takes of songs, with John remembering all the words. Like being in the room with the guy.

One of the best sounding Bob Marley live recordings. This show has circulated in a few versions. An audience version, and soundboard version, and a mix of soundboard and the audience.
The previous SDB says from Master but is not as crisp and clean as this one. This is missing the opening song Natural Mystic which only exisits in audience version at this point. Previous version that combined the Aud and SDB had Positive Vibration from Audience, Revolution was a mix of Audience and Soundboard, Exodus was Audience, Jamming was Audience, and was completely missing Redemption Song. Those tracks are now here in Soundboard and Redemption Song is included. Only real bummer is Jammin was cut on WAV one and continued on WAV two.

Running Time: 57 Minutes

Notes: Quality on this recording is excellent.
This was one of the first shows Van Halen played after being signed to Warner Bros in October 1977. Some people point to this date being the 1st of October but this has never been confirmed. Also, it's worth noting that Van Halen played two sets in Magic Mountain and it's not known if this is the first or second set. 'One More Time' is an unreleased song by Van Halen and this recording is the only example of this song ever being played live. 'Loss Of Control' is the earliest live example of this song being performed from the album 'Women and the Children First'. 'No More Waiting' is also known as 'Get Off My Back' and 'Show No Mercy' and the intro was recylced by Eddie nearly 20 years later for 'Take Me Back (Deja Vu)' for their 'Balance' album. 'Summertime Blues' is the earliest known live version by Van Halen. 'Angel Eyes' is a rare Acoustic Demo by DLR, recorded sometime in 1974. 'Take Your Whiskey Home' and 'In A Simple Rhyme' are demos which have been featured on the bootleg 'Demo Daze' but these come from a much lower generation Tape source. These two songs were also recorded in 1974.

This was a truly special run of shows for Def Leppard. The band really took it upon themselves to challenge themselves in a live setting in ways they haven't in a long time. To spice things up, they embraced the idea of opening for themselves, opting to play as the Def Leppard cover band "Ded Flatbird." Each Ded Flatbird set saw a changing setlist every night, culling from a core group of songs. A short intermission followed the roughly 45 minute set, and Def Leppard (proper) would return to play the entire Hysteria album and a two song encore.

This is a compilation of all the songs they played during the residency, assembled to model their set format. It includes three assembled Ded Flatbird sets plus a complete Hysteria set. The songs are pulled from various nights on the run. I will leave the fans to guess which song is from which show.

This mix is for all the fans who went to the shows and helped push the band to elevate their game. Open up a big bag of Doritos, kick back, and play this set loud. If you have issues with the sound, selection of songs, this compilation, or me in general...well have an extra bag of spicy Doritos on me and feel the burn.

This was truly a spectacular showing by the band. Easily the most excited I've gotten for a Def Leppard show. I was glad to see it covered so extensively by a great collaboration of tapers, and now everybody can enjoy some of the choice picks from this run.

Janis Joplin - 1963-xx-xx - San Francisco, CA (SBD/FLAC)

(Soundboard FLAC)

1353 Grant Avenue, North Beach

01. Leaving' This Morning (K.C. Blues)
02. Daddy, Daddy, Daddy
03. Careless Love
04. Bourgeois Blues
05. Black Mountain Blues
06. Gospel Ship
07. Stealin'

Total Time ::: 18:46

::: Excellent SBD recording for the era.
::: Warts: ALMOST NONE. I missed some dropouts & there are some non-removable ones. Occasional very tiny clicks in left channel.
::: Lower generation, better quality, clearer & less distorted than what circulates on "Blow All My Blues Away" & as "1962-08-10".
::: Circulates as late 1962, early 1963 & 1962-08-10, but this version is simply labeled "1963".
::: "Center Of The Universe", Mr JohnK himself, has issued the ultimatum. Share before everyone who gives a damn is dead or can't hear anymore.
::: For a finer listening experience turn up the bass!

Recording Information ::: unknown mono reel-to-reel recorder -> master mono reel-to-reel -> DAT x1or2 generations -> 1st(*) analog generation TDK SA-XG 90 cassette, Dolby off.
(* call it what you will).

Playback 2012-05-01 ::: 1st(*) generation TDK SA-XG 90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder -> CD-RW -> computer, EAC secure -> wavs -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, fades &/or glitches, dropouts, volume adjustments, no EQ) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. This one set a new mastering record for hours of work as it had a COMPLETE 2nd overhaul - hence the re-seed delay. However it is a better gem now & worth the wait. First uploaded week of 2012-05-11.

Line-up (unconfirmed - my tape had musician information added later from another source) ::: Janis Joplin - vocals // Larry Hanks - acoustic guitar, vocals // Billy Roberts - acoustic guitar, banjo, vocals, harmonica. (OR possibly: Roger Perkins - acoustic guitar & vocals instead of Roberts).

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

NOTHING here is on the "Janis" soundtrack (OST) "Early Perfomances" disc (which is clearly labeled with different years anyway) - Totally different live versions, but here's a breakdown to check easily:
"Stealin' MUCH slower than the OST & has harmonica from the start.
"Black Mountain Blues" has no piano & horns - The OST does.
"Leaving This Morning" ("K.C. Blues") MUCH slower than the OST with some lyric differences. Check the last 2 lines.
"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy" OST has NO harmonica whereas the OST has it right through.
"Careless Love" has different guitar arrangements right from the intro & ends on different words than the OST.

CoolSonics 151 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! ::: Corrections welcome ::: For Tim Hamer who is surely listening in the next world, and for all the people who have made entertaining, appreciative & informative comments on various recordings I've uploaded on DIME. And for Hanwaker who turned me onto some great unissued Janis recordings back in the early 80s. I remember blowing some people's minds when they came into the room in the midst of a Big Brother Avalon recording he had sent to me. This one was a lot of work. The reel had clearly been played quite a bit before it was digitised, but fortunately the signal on one side or the other was mostly intact & the highs were/are there. Anyway, the multitude of dropouts (that I noticed) were almost ALL seamlessly patched. This is one for the listening archives for sure. Was the TDK SA-XG 90 the heaviest cassette ever made? Sure feels like it. It's about 3 times the weight of a Maxell XLII-90. A great early set from one of the voices of the last century. Cool it came from a SUPER HEAVY cassette.

Kudos to Zongo for life support, Lochner for mikes&more & Fast Freddie for runnin' Video Dick's Record Emporium with the bathroom office full of tape decks. Thanks to Hanwaker (few among us can keep his pace). Mountains of gratitude to Davmar, D.White, Sanchez, Elliot, The Florida Kid, Kloiber, Zingg, JTW, Bershaw, Boston Gold, Weeks, Dixon, Moore, Gough & SO many more for all that collecting & sharing... Royal thanks to The Man In The Palace, Doc Tinker, Brinkhoffs, Barely Eatin', Reel Master Gaule, Parrish & all the traders who housed me thru my music acquisition & travel years. Hats off to Brother Kent, Uncle Jake, Little Queenie (& her neighbor Frank) & his honor Ptomaine Thomas. Glasses raised to Byron for musical horizon expansion & much obliged to J & Thurston for keepin' my concert fires burnin' since my continental shift.
