Jeff Buckley - 1990 - Babylon Dungeon Sessions (STU/FLAC)

01. Unforgiven
02. Radio
03. Eternal Life
04. Strawberry Street
05. Bluebird Blues.

Total running time: 14:52

NOTES
Jeff Buckley's first studio session.

'Unforgiven' is the initial working title for 'Last Goodbye'. The instruments, lyrics and vocal melody of the song are a bit different.

'Strawberry Street' previously unreleased, originally written in 1988 - happens to be one of the first songs penned by Jeff & the earliest version dates back to his very first recording session 'The Babylon Dungeon Sessions' from Sept '90. Only two known versions exist of this song. The version without vocals from the Babylon Dungeon sessions and the one which was later revisited and recorded in a rehearsal at The Knitting Factory, NY, in May of 1993, with an early try-out combo of bassist Tom Goodkind (of The Washington Squares) and drummer John McNally. That version is included only on the UK release Grace: 10th Anniversary Legacy Edition. It was also released as the flip side to Forget Her on the blue vinyl 7" freebie that came with the last issue of the Grace LP.

Fantastic recording from Pinkpop Festival 2001 with Radiohead headlining. I had received this one straight from the guy who recorded t from the radio, then transferred to CD and sent it to me. Unfortunately some of the cd´s from my collection are deteriorating, especially when ripping the last tracks. That is why now it becomes urgent to transfer all of them to HD before the are all messed up. Only one track (15) is disturbed, luckily.

Luckily there was somebody who told us that cd was the safest and most enduring support you could get...

The cd is not scratched at all but I tried different rip softwares and did not work. Anyone with good suggestions on how to clean the disc or ripping it differently are more than welcome. Also, if somebody has a clean version of Street Spirit, I can create a new version of this torrent.

Geetarz Comments:
Thanks to the folks at ZigZag, a great chronicle of the Dominos' live shows, previously closely held only by a few traders. Quality is fair to poor, as with many audience recordings from the era, but the performances and historical importance of the shows outshines any limitations of the actual recordings. This is a a fascinating document of the beginning and an end of an essential musical era. Recommended.

I recently found this disc again stored away with a few other unknown (unlabeled) items. Unfortunately I can't exactly remember how I got this. I believe a friend gave it to me years ago, before I had a computer and was able to download gems like this. I have to warn you though....this is of a rather poor quality. Every once in a while the screen turns black, there's a lot of shakin' goin' on, and well...I'd say it's a bit of a dodgy video! But...the atmosphere was simply AMAZING! David was having a very good time, chatty, cheerful, and the sound is fairly okay as well, so I had a great time watching this again, hope you will too!

B7 Heart Like A Wheel

Notes:

This recording comes from the vinyl bootleg "Live At The Roxy" from the Ze Anonym Plattenspieler label (ZAP 7888). This bootleg was partly known among collectors for its paper insert, which is pretty raunchy (see attached photo). The condition of this vinyl was Near Mint when I played it back to perform the digital transfer. I don't know the performance's date for an exact fact, but etree is saying it's from an unknown day in July 1976 (see link below). The right channel on side A may be slightly lower than the left channel. Nero didn't really offer a way for me to correct it. I believe there may be cuts on the record between tracks A4 - A5, B4 - B5, and B5 - B6 because there are noticeable transitions. Anyway, this is an excellent performance! Just thought I'd share!

bobsboots says:
A great package. The cover is an alternate photo from the Don Hunstien West 4th street photo shoot that produced the official LP cover. Inside is Dylan at CBS studio NY with famed producer John Hammond. The recordings are clear, crisp, and right off of the mix down board. This CD belongs in every collection. It was re-released in 1999 by an unknown Label, and again in 2001 by OMR.

14 - Negative Creep

17 - Rape Me
18 - Territorial Pissings
19 - Endless, Nameless

notes
This was Nirvana's "homecoming" Seattle show after the intital touring behind "Nevermind". They had just begun to break big and were the talk of the town in Seattle. Wisely, Geffen decided to film and multi-track the complete concert. The audio was recorded and mixed by Andy Wallace, the brains behind the final mix of "Nevermind". A few tracks appeared on CD singles and radio promos, and some of the video footage made it the Nirvana movie, but the complete show was an exclusive bootleg item until the 20th Anniversary edition of "Nevermind". However, the powers-that-be decided to totally remix the audio, and the resulting mix is very bare-bones, and nowhere near as good as Andy Wallace's original mix, which is featured here from a Geffen internal promo cassette. The show is 100% complete and even includes much of the pre and post-show ambience.

DISC 2
11/25/91 - Paradiso, Amsterdam NL

01 - Drain You
02 - Aneurysm
03 - School
04 - Floyd The Barber
05 - Smells Like Teen Spirit

11 - Come As You Are
12 - Been A Son
13 - Negative Creep
14 - On A Plain
15 - Blew
16 - Love Buzz
17 - Territorial Pissings

note
Now touring Europe, Nirvana's Amsterdam show was recorded by VPRO. Kurt is in a foul mood so this show has a lot more "attitude" than the Seattle show a few weeks previous. It appears that the audio mix was done "on the fly" and not multi-tracked as evidenced by all available versions which have various mixing problems during the first song "Drain You". Some material from this show turned up in the Nirvana movie and even on the live album, but the complete show is still a bootleg-only item. Until very recently, much of the show was available from a radio broadcast but there was missing material that could only be found from a mono video source. Thankfully, a new video has surfaced that features the complete, uncompressed stereo soundtrack starting at the beginning of "Drain You", and that is the source used here. The happenings before "Drain You" have been re-constructed from two sources that are only slightly lesser quality than the rest of the show. Finally, the show can be heard 100% complete and in stereo. Includes the legendary out-of-tune performance of "Come As You Are".

DISC 03
12/28/91 - Pat O'Brien Pavilion, Del Mar CA

01 - Drain You
02 - Aneurysm
03 - School
04 - Floyd The Barber
05 - Smells Like Teen Spirit
06 - About A Girl
07 - Polly
08 - Sliver
09 - Breed
10 - Come As You Are
11 - Lithium
12 - Territorial Pissings

notes
Back in the States, Nirvana were on a triple-bill tour with Pearl Jam and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, playing relatively short sets. For one reason or another, the show in Del Mar was chosen to be recorded for a Westwood One radio broadcast. Wisely, Andy Wallace was hired again, and he did a fine job capturing and mixing this excellent performance. The version featured here is a patchwork of various sources. Most of the show is available in perfect digital quality on various Westwood One promo CD's. However, they have made life difficult for the completist by adding fake crowd noise between many songs and throughout the first half of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". They also took the liberty of censoring the word "shit" from "Aneurysm". Thankfully, and much like the Seattle show, there is an internal Geffen promo cassette available to collectors. It sounds amazingly similar to the digital source, but has various dropouts and flaws. After some slight tweaks, it was used here for all the between-song crowd noise and for "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Now the show is 100% complete, free of dropouts that plague the promo cassette and the fake crowd noise that ruins parts of the digital promos. All of the source switches are seamless and undetectable. Some songs not yet featured on this set have been added to the end of this disc to fill up space. Most of them are soundboard quality and sound better than ever.

Official tracks "You Got The Magic" and "Evil Thing" not inclulded.

After the 'John Fogerty' solo album, John wasted no time proceeding to record more material for a new album  to be followed with a tour, backed by his favorite musicians.  In April 1976 he released a new single, 'You got the Magic/Evil Thing' which barely made it to the charts and did not sell a great deal.  The single, so was announced, would be an advanced single from the soon to be released new John Fogerty album 'Hoodoo'.

But as time passed Hoodoo's release was cancelled and set to a later date. A date which never came...  After the complete failure of the single, John had offered Asylum Records his material for the album.  Hoodoo was given a catalogue number (Asylum 7E-1081), and a cover was printed. Shortly before shipment of the album, the decision was made to withdraw the album.

The Band - 1971-12-xx - Hempstead, NY (STU/FLAC) Rehearsal

The Band - 1971-12-xx - Hempstead, NY
(Studio FLAC)

The Band
Rehearsal at Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NY
1971, Dec. ??

Note: This previously circulated as the 'SNL rehearsals', but is now known to be rehearsals for "Rock Of Ages" at Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, Long Island in New York.

Goody: If for no reason other than Garth's "Jingle Bells" quote at the end of "Chest Fever", I believe this is most likely a set of rehearsals with horns for "Rock of Ages" at the Academy of Music, in December of 1971. Therefore, the date change from previous editions in the title from Oct 30, 1976 to December of 1971.

Lolita's original notes:
I corrected the pitch (-50 cents) with Sound Forge 9 upon Goody's advice.
The levels have been adjusted and I also cleaned the transition tracks.

The rehearsal, which consisted of the 5 group members plus Allen Toussaint and a five-man horn section, was in preparation for the Band’s four night stand at the Academy of Music. Levon Helm is featured on lead vocals for most of the tracks, with Rick Danko taking the mic on “Unfaithful Servant” and Richard Manuel on “Across the Great Divide.” The resulting Academy of Music show was recorded and later released as their live album, Rock of Ages.

To give their music an added dimension, The Band recruited Allen Toussaint and a five-man horn section to spice up their sound for the Cahoots album. When they rehearsed for a four-night stand at the Academy of Music in New York City back in the winter of ‘71, Toussaint and the horns were invited.

On the introduction to this brief 40-minute excerpt of a rehearsal, the signature horns blow nicely that toot-toot New Orleans sound as the Band come together for The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. That’s what you’ll hear throughout the rehearsal, how the horns swooped, swished and skittered around, above and below the songs. Injecting freshness and excitement to the Band’s repertoire.

Just on the horizon other bands were preparing louder, angrier albums, hamming up with makeup and marketing, posing for hours in front of mirrors as they vied to be the next big thing.

But The Band were digging the older vibe with accordians, horns, a carnival sound, vaudeville, a hoedown that invented Americana before the term was coined. Levon Helm handles much of the vocal chores on the songs here leaving Rick Danko with Unfaithful Servant. Richard Manuel gets to be heard on two takes of Across The Great Divide.

The sound is thick and chunky with nice turns from Garth Hudson’s organ and Robertson’s sterling solos. But really, the horns take up centerstage much of the time. By now, success with Dylan and as a working unit had changed their lifestyle and Cahoots, the album preceding the concerts, had a bittersweet taste.

“I can’t emphasize how much success had changed everything,” Rick Danko said of this period. “We were outrageous in our behavior, and it was impossible to get people in one place at one time. And when we did, it was hard to work because when we looked at one another and saw how wrecked we were, it was hard not to crack up.”

This fly-on-the-wall moment with The Band and Toussaint disputes this. They sound energised and refreshed. But this was before they lurched forward into a downward spiral, eventually disbanding in 1978 with the prophetic Last Waltz.

Notes:
This is the stream of the Simon & Garfunkel early period torrents, 1957-1970, mostly in excellent quality, that will last until the beginning of September, still ratio-free. The music is great, so feel free to enjoy your way!
