Notes by the taper
This performance was stellar from start to finish albeit abbreviated due to casino agreement. I was going to rant about it but why bother, perhaps someone can give me a logical reason for the 90 minute rule (getting patrons to the gaming floor is not a good answer). Anyway, the band was in fine form and animated throughout the whole set. Steve seemed to be enjoying himself immensely and the rest of the band were loose and in the zone. I really wanted to hear GFTO, on my top ten list of albums that I would want if stranded on a desert island. Thanks to the other Dimers for their great efforts in documenting this tour so at least I have the other full length shows to listen to. Perhaps we'll get a Tormato/Tales tour next year!

As for the recording, excellent position with minimal crowd distraction. Go ahead and crank it up, nice stereo separation and channel definition.

TOTAL: 29:39

The Progressive Pop Festival ’70 in Cologne, Germany brought together some of the best British prog rock groups of the era including Procol Harum, Soft Machine, Steamhammer, Colosseum, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Deep Purple (when they were still considered “progressive”).  On April 3rd, the first day of the two day event, Yes played a half hour long set drawn almost exclusively from their latest album Time And A Word, which they finished recording in January and would be released in June.

A previous release of this set can be found on Every Little Thing (Highland HL 419) sourced from a fair but listenable audience tape. Progressive Rock Festival 1970 on Virtuoso focuses upon a brand new tape which recently surfaced.  This recording is sourced from microphones placed on stage by WDR FM and represents a tremendous upgrade to Highland.

The Master Tape Edition is very broad and lively, focusing upon vocals and Peter Banks’ guitar.  The second half of the disc contains the Remastered Edition of the same tape which brings out the lower frequencies, giving prominence to the bass and some hiss removal.

The set begins with the first two songs from the new album, “No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed” and “Then.” Both songs had been part of the live act for almost a year up to this point. The studio versions were heavily treated with the orchestra, but obviously the stage arrangements from before are played.

An eyewitness confirms that the sound system was poor for most of the bands and for Yes it even breaks down right at the beginning of “Then.” Bill Bruford keeps the momentum going while it is being fixed. Chris Squire leads the rest of the band back into the song. “Every Little Thing” is the only song from the first album played and includes short references to “Norwegian Wood” and ”Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring.”

“ Astral Traveller”, the newest original in the set, sounds adventurous, dynamic and inventive compared to the other songs. The short set ends with “Everydays,” also from the new album.

This tape is significant since, except for the April 7th BBC session for John Peel where they recorded “For Everyone,” this would be one of the last recordings with Banks. He would be fired two weeks after this show on April 18th after the show on Luton and replaced by Steve Howe (and the rest, as they say, is history).

Progressive Pop Festival 1970 is one of the most interesting and exciting Yes tapes to surface in a while.  Recordings of the first (of many) Yes lineups are rare, and even more rare are audience recordings in such enjoyable sound quality and is a worthy upgrade and replacement of the old Highland release.

Just back from the cruise.... WOW. Lineup: Yes, Steve Hackett, Carl Palmer, Ambrosia, Glass Hammer, Nektar, Zebra and IO Earth. (Tangerine Dream cancelled several months ago; Saga cancelled at the last minute due to a death in the family.) Most of the acts played two shows plus there were meet-and-greets and Q&A sessions. Roger Dean did a fantastic presentation. Venues included the large (around 1,500 capacity?) ship theater in addition to a stage set up outside on the deck by the pool. Mixed in with all the music related activities were two stops in Georgetown (Grand Cayman) and Ocho Rios (Jamaica).

For me the highlight of the cruise came on the last day when Hackett and his band (Genesis Revisited) played the pool stage. John Wetton was a surprise guest, coming onstage to sing lead vocal on Afterglow. What an amazing moment.

Anyway back to Yes...
The setlist for night #1 was Close To The Edge, Going For The One, then Starship Trooper. The ship was really rocking due to heavy seas that evening... Steve's slide guitar (on wheels) was rolling back and forth and he had to catch it a few times! He quipped it was like playing "on the back of a horse." Night #2 was a little calmer. Setlist was Close To The Edge (again) and The Yes Album followed by Roundabout.

Originally I was not going to do any recording/filming intending it to be a pure vacation however I succumbed to recording this show and the first UK show. No I didn't film anything except Steve and Jon Davison's acoustic Leaves of Green and Steve's performance of Mood For A Day, both done at the conclusion of the Yes Q&A session.

This was described as an FM recording on the folder, but Forgotten Yesterdays has it as a soundboard, seems to be plenty of audience noise on it,so make your own mind up.Left everything as it was. A bit of disc slipping on And You And I.Nothing too drastic. Also a bit of tape warbling from time to time.Checked SBE's with Trader's Little Helper.

This show is split up into two discs because its just barely too long for one disc, so I left it the way I had it taped. Disc 1 is basically side a of the cassette and Disc 2 is of course then side b.

Notes:
I was not going to go to this show because I knew I would only get 2 albums out of the three. But a buddy of mine had comped tickets so I couldn't pass up a freebie. This was recorded from the floor about 25 feet from the stage in the center. Because this was a casino the setlist was abbreviated, but it was a really good show. Tempos, for the most part, were back to normal. Like previous complaints about the last couple tours Geoff Downes keys were inaudible at times although the recording seems to do a better job than the ears. Steve Howe was the best of the night. At one point during Perpetual Change Steve, Chris and Alan were not together timing-wise, but after about 30 seconds they got it together. Jon Davison did not disappoint.

Started off as a good day when the UPS guy delivered my new microphones just in time to get everything ready to go to the show. Was a little worried as I did not have a lot of time to test out the mics before I had to leave for the show. The show was not sold out and I had 4 empty seats to my left so I eventually moved to those seats and was able to comfortably monitor the levels and get them adjusted. I think the recording came out really good. I also got some Hyper Card elements too. I will try them sometime soon but for now I am happy with the mics.

The show itself was great. Steve Howe was the most impressive of the group, he never fails to impress me. I thought Jon Davison did an admirable job as well. When I first heard about this tour I thought .... "Why Going For The One?" but I have to say I have a much deeper apreciation for that album now. I always liked Wonderous Stories, but had not paid real close attention to the rest of the album. My mistake... it is realy much better than I remembered it to be. There was an intermission between Close to the Edge and Going for the One. I cut out that intermission and spliced the very begining of the Going For The One set to the end of Siberian Khatru. You can hear the cut for that split second as they don't match perfectly but it is audience noise so you have all the music intact.

This is a great concert coming in the heels of the Inglewood forum concert, I think of it as something of enough importance to be included on the Tales project. No covers, as one should expect, but you can find plenty on the net. I've decided not to include any given the anonimity od these files. Other shows to be included will be a handful of the European leg concerts, the fabulous Boston Tea Party concert (the last time in the tour they played the whole TFTO album) and a few more surprises from the American leg. (the eartly Philly show and the Tampa show included).

here's a nice "tales" show and the sound is top notch! thanks to mike millard the presumed taper, the uploader, and everyone else--sent by a friend. nothing official, nothing on tracker

The Ocean shows march on. This one, courtesy of Relayerman, from Memphis contains all kinds of extras. Sound is good and the performance is strong. I don't remember where or when I got this, but this is the original fileset. Thanks to the taper and Relayerman, and all those who share the music of the Topographic Oceans. We love when we play!

This is from the master tapes, converted to CD and 'remastered' (I use the term loosely). Its not a perfect show, but does include 20 minutes of pre-show Yes ambient sounds and announcements, the complete show, the post-show music, and the back-stage meeting with Rick and Eddy Offord (approx 160 minutes). If you listen real hard at the tail end you can hear Chris explain to someone what Khatru means. Forgotten Yesterdays website lists Starship Trooper as part of the encore, but that is not true. It was not played at this show.

Keep in mind its a 30-year old show and is not perfect, but its a good B show. There is some slight distortion here and there as well as the band was quite loud. I did not attend/tape this show, but my friend did who does not trade. In fact most of the Memphis Yes shows floating about are his recordings (eg. Memphis 75 & 77).

During the first part of the show the fire marshall had kept the lights on. You will get this as you listen to the show. The crowd is a little boisterous because of it. Also, the Cook Convention center is like an old airplane hangar. Jon Anderson has some comments about it as well.

Nice one from the Tales tour. It sounds pretty nice to my ears. I havent listened to any Tales tracks for some 10 years so it was good to listen to this show. I pretty much prefer this from the following Relayer tour where the band was getting too complex and slightly unlisteneable. The setlist was organised in a kind of "Floyd way": the last album in its entirety, the new record and one track from the past. In some shows the band would play a second encore (Yours Is No Disgrace) but here it was not the case. This is the second night in Detroit.
