78 Closing Comments

In May of 1988 Atlantic Records celebrated their 40th anniversary in New York City at Madison Square Garden. A grand mix of Atlantic artist performed ranging from the past to the (then) present. The actual concert lasted over 12 hours and portions of the concert were broadcast on HBO and simulcast on FM radio. My recording was taken from WNEW FM in New York and totals 5 1/2 hours in length. The entire show was never broadcast. Some artist’s sets were edited and some omitted entirely. The broadcast started hours after the event started so some of the performances shown were live while others were recorded earlier. To some extent the performances were not broadcast in their original running order with acts from earlier in the day inserted between the later acts and of course songs omitted to make room for them.

The HBO show and this simulcast are probably the most complete versions of the show in circulation. The HBO show has been posted here before: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...lantic+records. But as far as I know the simulcast has not. An edited down version of this concert was shown on ABC TV later this same year and then Atlantic Records released a video of the show which contained excerpts of the performance intermixed with archive footage of other Atlantic artists.

Quite an interesting array or artists spanning 40 years of Atlantic history. There is a section in the center of the show with various members of Booker T. & The M.G.'s featuring Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn along with Dan Akyroyd as his alter ego Elwood Blues. They are listed here as The Elwood Blues Review as dubbed so by Elwood himself. And of course the night concludes with the Led Zeppelin Reunion featuring Jason Bonham on drums. Quite a night.

There are a couple of glitches in this recording such as some static present in track 9 and a few other random spots. I don't know if that is an artifact of the broadcast or just my reception. I'm leaning towards an artifact of the broadcast. Also there is a tape flip at the end of Urgent and another at the end of People Got To Be Free with a short bit missing. Other then that the recording is complete. Enjoy!

*this was selling on eBay a few years ago as a set of 3 discs combining both early and late shows, not a bad combination given that not a single song was repeated twice in the course of the evening. I've managed to get a copy through a trade. The two put together offer some 190 minutes of the 1984 material in pristine sound quality. I've split them back into early and late, and would like to seed the late show as well, pending some additional checkups and fills (as I am still missing the encore of the late). Some small tracking adjustments have been made, but no other changes.

Unknown venue
August 1980

01 - War Pigs
02 - Neon Knights
03 - Children Of The Sea
04 - Black Sabbath
05 - Die Young

Notes from the net:
Here's an interesting show that surfaced couple of years ago.
The original disc is labeled Dragons & Kings and has the following description "The music material is directly copied from the original tape owned by Cozy Powell. The tape was passed on to Cozy by Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath" (presumably to allow Cozy to learn these songs for shows.) How accurate that is, is unclear. But there have been a lot of tapes released after Cozy's passing that are supposed to be from his basement tapes...so who knows.

The show itself is an amazing quality Soundboard Recording. Too bad it is also very very incomplete. This is taken straight from the soundboard, no mixing has been done. The venue and location of this one is unclear. It is claimed to be from August of 1980 which would mean that it's from the US leg of the Heaven And Hell World tour. It can't be from after that since it does have Bill Ward on drums.

This also is not the Hartford show that was also released officially on the Heaven And Hell Deluxe Edition.

Regardless this is a MUST HAVE for all Sabbath fans! A great recording of a fantastic preformance! Ronnie really tears out on Black Sabbath, absolutely amazing!

NOTES ON THE SHOW AND THE RECORDING
Brest, in the top north-western corner of France, was the last stop on Peter Gabriel’s 1983 fourth album (Security, to US blokes) tour. The Call had accompanied him during the summer US dates, then joined him again for the last leg of the tour in continental Europe. I did see quite a few PG dates that year, starting in Paris, with the 2 shows on July the first (afternoon and evening), and ending with the last 2 weeks in France, covering Avignon, Grenoble, Dijon, Strasbourg, Lille, Paris, Nantes and Brest…
With my friend Mike, we mostly hitchhiked our way from one town to the next. A few times, after a freezing cold night, we resorted to catching a train just to warm up a bit, and on a couple of occasions we even met the band doing the same journey from one town to the next on the very same train.
Peter travelled first, we were in second class, and on the trip from Nantes to Brest we shared a local train and a large compartment with The Call. They had seen us before and knew we were following Gabriel around, but they were quite happy to hear that we had grown accustomed to hearing them before the “main” act, but especially that both Mike and I absolutely loved their stuff. In fact, I must point out that for the very final couple of dates we had grown to quite a larger group of people, counting 2 French girls, 2 Britons, 2 Italians (including yours truly), one Japanese lady, and 3 more blokes from Germany, Holland and Switzerland…
So when Mike (the German one) asked The Call’s crew if there was any chance of having a recording of the show, they had no problem with it it whatsoever: and at the end of that very night before everybody went their separate ways we did get a soundboard recording.

The words with which PG described The Call’s songs as “music which comes from the heart” has stayed with me ever since: there was such a heartfelt passion in their exhibition and in Michael Been’s delivery that (IMHO) very few bands ever got close to it.

That particular night the atmosphere was at the same time hot and relaxed, providing a perfect combination for a great performance. The band was even asked for an encore (which unfortunately is not complete on the tape)
As he always did with his support acts, Peter came on stage without any make up (that was the monkey face tour) and jokingly introduced them talking in French (“I said you’re shit Michael!”)…
I can’t remember during which song, but it must have been close to the end of the set that Peter reappeared on stage, this time wearing the monkey make up and carrying a large plant (or a small tree): he was not alone, as the other members of his band did the same and caused havoc on stage, depositing the large vases here and there while The Call kept on playing :-)
The “favour” was later reciprocated, as all of The Call re-appeared during PG’s set: all made up with the monkey face, wearing towels made to look like giant diapers, and throwing bananas all over the place while they jumped everywhere up and down the stage. You guessed it: the song was “Shock The Monkey”, and it was PG’s turn to try and keep on going with the chorus while everybody was laughing real hard!

What else can I say? This tape is so “loaded” with memories from one of the happiest times in my life, that even the fact we did find most of our luggage and properties gone (we had left it in a friends car that was broken into and everything was stolen after the show) recedes and fades out as not such a painful event. What does help is remembering the laughs - as well as the cries - provoked by “the Scot” in our group who kept going all night at the train station raging and spitting venom about “thieves eating frog legs” and “froggie bastards” in general…
