Tape story:
The venue is the famous Roman amphiteatre (1st Century BC) in Verona, also known for the Verona Arena Festival (summer opera festival).
I had a seat in the first level gallery at about 50 m from the central stage. Quiet people around me, but chatting is occasionally audible in the quiter parts of the recording.
The acoustic of the Arena is amazing and the sound is excellent.
Unfortunately the second half of the recording (tracks 18 to 31) is affected by hiss on the left channel due to my computer bag falling down a step under my seat when I tried to protect it from rain.
I have put the recorder in the front pocket and the cable was strechted. Where the recording is seriously ruined I have used the right channel only (stereo-to-mono).

What about the show?
It was my first Kraftwerk show (and the first 3D concert in my life).
A classic "English-language" performance with some surprises: Pocket Calculator in Italian (Minicalcolatore) and The Model in German (Das Modell)
Also Homecomputer, The Man-Machine, Neon Lights, Radioactivity and Techno Pop contain choruses and/or verses in German
I can imagine Kraftwerk would thank the large number of German attendees (the Garda Lake near Verona is a common holiday site for German-speaking people) and Verona is not far from Austria and South Germany
A light rain fell between Spacelab and Autobahn (during Metropolis you can hear occasional raindrops on the mics)

Technical notes:
- The total running time of the recording was 2:14:02; I have cut the first 10:24 mins of pre-intro electronics and last useless 27 secs reducing the master to 2:03:11.
- I have amplified (+3.0 dB on the left channel, +3.5 dB on the right channel) and slightly compressed (-30 dB/2.0:1) the whole recording and faded-out the last 10 secs.
- About 12 mins of the recording has been reduced to mono (right channel has been used in place of the left one) in order to remove serious hiss on the left channel:
* Autobahn (from 0:32 to 1:40)
* encore break 1 (from 1:18 to the end) and The Robots (from beginning to 1:49)
* encore break 2 (completely), Planet Of Visions (completely) and Boing Boom Tschak (from beginning to 1:23)
- If you burn to audio CD, you will need 2 CDs (CD1: 01-12; CD2: 13-31)

"This recording is a poor gift to Ian Macdonald (ianmacd) for his excellent and inspiring residency of 8 nights at the Amsterdam Paradiso"

Note:
This is a very common bootleg from the first run of The Mix tour, though less so of this original pressing. The "Dynamo Deutschland" one, though the same recording, cuts off at the end of each track, preventing from proper transitions or fade outs. This initial release restores those, making for a much better listening experience overall. I'm surprised that this recording hasn't passed through Dime from the looks of it, considering the many other popular bootlegs that have shown up.

In regards to sound quality, it's a pretty damn good recording. It's also very difficult to classify, in terms of whether it's a soundboard or an audience recording. It's so close to
sounding like it came straight from the speakers, since it captures everything that is being played. However, there will be cases of "audience overload,"where the crowd will be heard clearly at certain points (Radioactivity, in particular, has a person reciting the intro at the beginning of it). Also, it sounds a bit flat, though that doesn't prevent any details from jumping out in critical listening.

Despite any issues, this is a recording that needs to be listened to if you're a Kraftwerk fan, due to an amazing performance. It's the one show that I would actually listen to all the way, since all tracks were performed well, with very little to no nitpicks that would only have made me listen to only parts of other shows. This is certainly better than their most recent shows.

Notes:
One of the best audience recordings available from the Computer World tour. This one is likely to come from a very low-gen tape, if not straight from the master tape. It is also one of the very first bootlegs from the Computer World to be pressed on CD (early 1990s) and to feature a complete recording from that tour. This concert was the second of a two-night stand at the Hammersmith Odeon, even though these weren't the only Kraftwerk concerts in London during that tour as they also played at the Hammersmith Palais and Lyceum a few days before. There probably were a much larger audience in London eager to see Kraftwerk, but as back then they weren't likely to play in open air festivals or stadiums, they prefered scheduling more dates in smaller venues.

This Hammersmith Odeon concert was previously issued as a 3-LP set simply called 'Computerwelt' with artwork heavily based on the official studio album. It reportedly features - according to TwingoKraftwerk.com - a slightly better sound quality than the CD release, but as I've never particularly heard this vinyl recording, I cannot say if it was made from a different source.

A Rocking Regimental Recording

notes by the taper
Not my usual fayre...when this show was announced I had a real "do I, don't I" moment, ultimately reconciled by taking the view that they're "on the doorstep", so I'd might as well as the likelihood is I'd never have as convenient an opportunity to see these frontiersmen again. Convenient it may have been, easy it wasn't. Tickets sold out in minutes. I hadn't appreciated just how strong a following this lot still had, and when I got to the venue it was clear this was going to be "an event". Lots of Kraftwerk "lookalikes" (red shirts, black ties & trousers...), people of a certain age having made some effort. I like an air of expectancy before a concert, and this one had it in sack loads...with the added twist of everyone wearing 3D glasses to fully appreciate the 3D imagery that animated the show. And so, on with the show - and it is a SHOW. Four virtually static performers at their illuminated podiums, in front of a giant screen from which eminated retro-techno imagery. And boy, does it take you back...to a time when even I felt technology was almost understandable yet wonderous at the same time. So, so stylish...a bit kitsch one might argue, but comforting nevertheless. A perfect accompanyment to the regimented electronica which was surprisingly familiar to even a sceptic like me. My curiosity was well founded, and like everyone else I was soon immersed in the experience, almost disappearing into the pools of lo-fi digital landscapes hypnotised by the heavy, metronomic pulse of the "pioneers at the podium". This is more than a concert, it's an experience...an art installation perhaps. It ain't rock 'n' roll, but it's infectiously entertaining nevertheless. The show seemed to last less time than it took for the tickets to sell out, the truth being that we'd been engaged for a little over two hours. Whilst there was much enthusiastic cheering between pieces, the audience was absorbed into virtual silence during the numbers.

This to my ears is the best quality recording of any of the "TEE" catalogue shows I have heard; the sound is crystal clear and well balanced, with a mostly super respectful and very quiet audience that never disturbs the recording. if anything the vocals sound slightly echoey - otherwise this recording is a real treat!

Notes on the show:
An incredible find that only just recently came to light after sitting for some 45 years. This comes courtesy of J.T. who got it from Saul Smaizys. If that name sounds familiar, he interviewed Ralf & Florian in April of 1975 on WXRT radio in Chicago for an article he would later write from that interview. In talking with those in the Kraftwerk community, we have deduced that this show is from Vancouver. Should further details come to light, I will update. Of particular interest is the very WEIRD intro to Kometenmelodie I. Ralf & Karl have a slight improv jam on vibes & the Vako Orchestron's "Vocal Choir." Sadly this tape suffers from lots of hiss and what sounds like radio bleed-through from another station. Nothing has been messed around with in any way. If anyone wants to improve upon what's here, feel free!

Notes by the uploader:
A bit of a story to the coming of these tapes (I also taped the Computer World show), when these shows were first announced I was very excited and was hoping to get tickets. I was in class the time these went on sale and had for different internet browsers up with 2-3 tabs each to get ANYTHING. Sadly, I got nothing for any date. I was pretty bummed, so I started posts on Craigslist to get a ticket to any of the shows. I was also willing to pay a bigger amount just because "Man Machine" and "Computer World" were my two favorite albums, and could only go to the weekend shows due to final exams and I worked on Sunday.

Finally, a two weeks before the show, someone said they had an extra and I booked my plane ticket and headed to NYC!!! I was so excited and fortunate to have the opportunity to see this show. The venue, was The Museum of Modern Art in the 2nd floor atrium. I went there earlier in the day to check out the museum and look around. Amazing stuff, but I was wondering about the tall ceilings and how the sound would be. Lets just say, it was the best sound I have ever heard… ever.. for a concert. Simply amazing.

The 3D was spectacular with Kraftwerk's simple visuals. Was so pumped to hear "Spacelab" live after watching the Munich YouTube video hundreds of times since October. A young Ralf Hutter singing "Radioactivity" for the visuals at the beginning of that song gave me chills. This night was super special to me. Something I will never forget in my life. The stage itself was small and the left stack had a column right to the left of it. They put some sound foam on it, and I thought that it would be the best to record right in front of it because it would bounce off it nicely, and it sure did! A bit in the middle there were some people (who obviously were not big fans of Kraftwerk and just wanted to be there for its "exclusivity") decided to have a faint conversation for a good 10 minutes or so, before going to get another drink. People I talked to said that this was the most energetic night in terms of audience. Most of the other nights were very quiet, clapping and woo'ing at the end of songs. I am very happy with the outcome of this tape and have to say it's one of my better ones.

Kraftwerk - 1975-03-22 - Koln, DE (SBD/FLAC)

(Soundboard FLAC)

Kraftwerk:
Großer Sendesaal Westdeutscher Rundfunk
Köln, Germany
March 22nd, 1975

Source:
"Kometenmelodie 3" bootleg Vinyl > Jensen JTA-980 Turntable/CD Recorder > CD-R > dbPowerAMp Music Converter > FLAC Level 8

Ralf Hutter: Minimoog, Farfisa Professional Piano
Karl Bartos: Electronic Percussion, Vibraphone
Wolfgang Flur: Electronic Percussion
Florian Schneider-Esleben: Arp Odyssey, Amplfied Flute, mixer

01 - Ruckzuck & Kometenmelodie (Side 1)
02 - Autobahn (Side 2)

Duration: 55 mins

Notes on the show:
This isi either a Pre-FM or Soundboard sourced recording as all instruments are well captured. There is also what I beleive is either Ralf or the radio announcer speaking just before Autobahn, anyone able to translate what he says? This is direct from the vinyl to CD and then to FLAC. Nothing has been messed around with in any way.
