07 - Pigs on the Wing (I + II)

specs shn format, 2 cd

This is the last known recording of Careful With That Axe, Eugene

#7 in Top 10 Pink Floyd shows of all time, according to the Pink FLoyd database:

This show is the best of the best, absolutely fantastic from top to bottom. And I'm not just saying that because I was the seed...

Ed Paule's complete release notes are below:

Oh, the storied history of Animal Instincts...
Ron Toon released AI (rev0) to the world sometime during the last millennia. Long before Harvested had a QA department.
It was my discussions with Ron concerning the clicks, pops, and other glitches in AI (rev0) that led to my joining the team.
One of my earliest contributions was to deglitch AI and the first rev A edition was released.
As the years went by, a much lower generation source for this show emerged. My first knowledge of its existance was the RoIO Mr Pig. Although the SQ on Mr Pig was better than AI (you can hear many subtleties not detectable on AI revA), Mr Pig had other problems, like clipping, gaps during the tape flips, unbalanced, etc. So the thoughts of doing a rev B began.
That was two years ago...
About six months ago, we decided to do it. We got another source, a better source than Mr Pig. One that didn't have the clipping problem. Then Marc-Olivier went to work.
Marc-Oliver spent quite sometime remastering this new source and expertly patching the tape flips. Then it was my turn.
I recently finished doing the deglitching and sent a copy to Richard to start the weed.
So here it is! Animal Instincts rev B (HRV-CDR-014) Pink Floyd recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum May 9, 1977.
For me, the highlight of this show is SoYCD6-9. It's the best version of this song ever.
For those of you that already own a copy of AI, you know that a bonus track is included at the end of disc two. This being the studio version of Pigs on the Wing with Snowy White prviding a bridge between the two parts. AI rev0 and revA simple included a copy of this song as it was released on Snowy White's Goldtop CD. Well...
We've changed this too for AI revB. Now you have the original version (the Pink Floyd mix) as it appeared on the original 8-track tapes, transferred to digital direct from an original 8-track tape. This version is different than the Goldtop version (the Snowy mix).

I had bad vibes on the drive to the concert because the weather forecast called for 80 to 100 percent chance of rain during the show. Thankfully, we got not one drop of rain, and there was a nice breeze. I saw the Stones only once before in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1994, so I figured if I wanted to see them again now was the time. Mick was full of energy throughout the show, and the crowd couldn’t get enough. There were bum notes from Keith from time to time, but no one seemed to care. It’s clear that 2015 is not 1972, but they’re still getting it done. I was hoping for “Street Fighting Man,” but “She’s So Cold” was nice. Let me know what you think of the quality.

Welcome to the fifth chapter of JEMS' Nothing to Lose series revisiting Bruce's remarkable 1977 tour. For the full history of our obsession with this era and the back story on these "Official Audience Tapes," please refer to the notes in Vol. One found here:

Installment No. 5 brings Springsteen to New Haven, Connecticut, as the tour settles into its final shows in the northeast, six of which are still to follow. For me, this is a period of near perfection in terms of the caliber of the performances and the sense of urgency that's palpable in the recordings.

There may be only 13 songs in the set, but Bruce and the band are making every one of them count. My typical listening to material from '77 has tended to focus on the unique songs, like "Action in the Streets" and "It's My Life." But in preparing this show, I was struck by just how good the "standard" songs are. Bruce sings "Spirit in the Night" and "Thunder Road" with every bit as much conviction as he does "Don't Look Back," and we all know how special "Backstreets" is every night in '77. Fresh ears also picked out a lot of distinctive guitar work from Steve and Bruce that I felt I had never noticed before. "We tore it apart and put it together again" indeed.

New Haven is the final "official audience" source in the JEMS Archive. I consider it the best recording of the five, sounding just a bit closer, sharper and with better instrument separation than the previous four. It came to us from a different source than the first four (an insider, not a collector), so it may also be a generation to the good comparitively. But it is incomplete, joined in progress during "Spirit."

Happily, our pal CB taped the show as well and loaned us his master cassettes. The CB source was previously released by Fanatic; we did a fresh transfer for this release. CB told me he taped from the back of the arena and it sounds like it, but the recording is still clear and fills in what's missing from the better source to give us the complete New Haven show. Samples provided.

Special thanks yet again to: M and J from JEMS for pulling out our many versions of these DATs and helping make new transfers; to CB, one of "The Original Two" who got the whole Springsteen taping hobby started; the folks on the Stone Pony message board whose thread sparked this series; and to mjk5510 who takes our bits and bobs and gets them all pretty for you.

When the '77 series returns, we'll revisit Toronto, Detroit and Toledo, all from fresh master transfers. Until then, enjoy New Haven, and better still, add your thoughts about the show and the recording in the comments.

Notes: There were numerous dropouts and numerous glitches in the recording -- primarily in Track 6 -- that were inherent in the FM broadcast AND the online mp3 stream. The glitches seem to be related to the station's use of a computer for recording or processing that seems to get overwhelmed or overloaded, possibly from an overloaded processor, a too-slow hard-drive or a fragmented drive. The glitches sound sort of like a single note repeating itself over the space of a fraction of a second. The issues have plagued WWOZ's live broadcasts for years.

Where possible the dropouts and glitches were repaired or removed:
* A 2.2-second dropout was closed up at 3:00 into Track 18. There is an audible cut in the recording about 1-1/2 seconds later.

* There were 9 dropouts totaling about 11 seconds beginning about 4:22 into Track 6. In addition to the dropouts of silence, there were numerous glitches, rending about 45 seconds of the song virtually unlistenable (and unrepairable). That section was removed and replaced with a splice of 1:29 from the audience source, beginning at 4:11 into Track 6, with 10-second crossfades into and out of the splice. (The original, unedited FM track with the dropouts is archived.) Due to differences in sound quality, the transition to the audience splice is fairly jarring. But, arguably, it's better than the original FM recording.

The FM broadcast begin in the middle of Los Lobos' second song. In order to create a more complete recording, an additional splice from the audience source was used to restore the stage intro, first song and the beginning of track 2. The FM source begins about 1:48 into Track 3.

Eventim Apollo

Taped from towards the back of the upper circle (row V). People behind did chatter from time to time (got on my wick at the time), but I don't think it's made any difference. Main issue was the extreme dynamics, the loud bits being very loud, the quiet bits being very quiet - which I've addressed with a combination of iZotope RX2 declipper and Goldwave volume reprofiler. Just to mention, however, that the little bit of distortion at the end of Aerial was present at the concert.

George Harrison - 1974-11-30 - Chicago, IL (AUD/FLAC) Evening show

(Audience FLAC)

Chicago Stadium

Evening show

Version - I'm Still Neil Diamond! (Howling Leg - HL363)

The 26th show of George Harrison's 1974 North American tour. Another show which has only surfaced latterly, and has not been widely bootlegged, though Tarantura released a version in 2007 ("Waiting for a Hot Ticket") which features "Tom cat", missing here - perhaps a different recording of the show? The recording is not a great one. The recording levels were evidently too high, and there is a lot of distortion in many tracks, especially in the bass. A couple of tracks are almost lost in the distortion. There are also speed problems in a couple of tracks. It does give a good immediate sense of how loud the shows must have been, however. The Indian section is completely absent.

As for the show itself, George remains upbeat, with jokes in the intros, including a Monty Python quote, and the show is received very enthusiastically by the crowd. The performance of "Soundstage of Mind" confirms it as the evening performance.

Track 6 - Intros by George "Emil Richards on percussion!", "Robben Ford on guitar!", "Willie Weeks on the bass guitar (inaudible due to distortion) – I kidnapped him to play for you!"
Track 7 – "Chicago has always been [firecracker] good for a laugh… Chicago has always had good music… On percussion over there, Mr Lunacy himself, Emil Richards… Robben Ford, who I also kidnapped with Tommy from the LA Express... My name’s Neil Diamond…"
Track 15 – "...Say no more! Say no more!"

Editing notes -
Speed correction - 97.618% throughout.
Left channel lowered by 3.38 dB throughout, right channel by 2.03 dB from Track 10 onwards.
Track 2 – Bass distortion is bad throughout this one
Track 3 – 2:35 tape speed wobble corrected
Track 4 – cleaner sound (could be adjustments from the mixing desk), though it distorts in the middle with a louder drum section.
Track 5 – 0:55 another tape wobble, which slows the tempo, corrected
Track 6 – start removed, segued with end of 5 (this would have been where the Indian section was). The first ten seconds are lost to distortion, and the sound takes a while to come good. Click repair used.
Track 9 – 3:25 major sound problems throughout the rest of the song - distortion, major speed fluctuations.
- applause added (from end of 4) to correct/segue an abrupt cut-off before start of next song
Track 10 - time errors corrected (music slowed briefly) at 4:15, 4:19 and 4:22-4:36
– 1 sec repeat at 5:44 removed (?bad edit to cover break for or battery change)
Track 11 - sound is suddenly cleaner, and remains clean (except bass drum distortion) till Track 14
Track 14 – dropout at 2:07 smoothed
Track 15 – half second of applause cut (?bad edit of previous cut from longer applause)
Track 16 – declick applied from 4:24. Two seconds of applause appended to end for fade-out

Original notes:
"Audience recording from the original master cassette. Sound quality is decent, not great, as it was hard to get a great recording from the Chicago Stadium any way, anyhow! There is some crackling from the mic connection in one of the songs, but it does not last long. I am not sure if this is the complete recording. It probably is. George’s voice sounds a bit hoarse, so he may have abbreviated the set. I saw this same show at Madison Square Garden and recall it was not a long show and George’s voice was in poor form.

"This release is the fourth of many from the Howard Silver collection. Originally from New York, Howard spent his college years and thereafter in Chicago. He attended many concerts in the 70’s, and taped many of them using a Sony TC-110 with built in microphone. For later shows, he used an external microphone, of which brand he does not recall. These shows have never been heard by anyone but Howard and his wife! However, he is no hoarder. He did not think anyone would be interested in his tapes.

With L. Shankar on tracks 10, 18, 20-21, 24, 28, and 38.

'Sup, guys, how about a little January Surprise? Nothing too TERRIBLY mind-blowing here... just, you know, the longest show FZ ever played, and one of those pesky "must-have" shows in the FZShows oeuvre.

Seriously now, really and truly, what needs to be said about this one? Zappa, O'Hearn, Shankar, special guests, epic jams (Packard Goose - does anything more need to be said?), oftimes-bizarre rarities (dig that Idiot Bastard Son - the backing music sounding almost like Läther) and old standby favorites (probably the finest version of Watermelon in Easter Hay ever played live) all unite for nearly four hours of absolute magic.

Just to scratch the very surface of what's on offer here: we have twelve minutes of relative dead air (Ms. X and, even moreso, Nancy's Life Story). Bobby Brown is played. The bass on Easy Meat is really... out of tune. Those fifteen minutes combined are the lowpoint of the show.

The high point? If I had to choose just one (which, evidently, I do), I'd go with Packard Goose. Nearly twenty minutes of blisteringly intense soloing from both Zappa and Shankar which, were it not for the "recent" discovery of the final fifteen minutes of the show, would be easy to consider the "climax" (in a dramatic sense) of the night. Considering that, as I already mentioned, this show also features what may well be the finest Watermelon in Easter Hay ever performed before a live audience (as well as some positively sick soloing in other places), I think considering Packard Goose the highlight is saying something.

About that "recent" discovery hidden in that previous paragraph: Evidently there were two very-well-prepared tapers in the audience that night. One of them made his recording from the floor, the other from the balcony. I believe it's the balcony recording which has been in circulation since the 1980s, but someone may have to correct me. Anyway, the other recording didn't see wide circulation until sometime in the late 1990s (late 1998, to hear Foggy G tell it).

It had always irked me that this show was incomplete, especially when we knew a complete "patch" was out there. Of all the shows to be left in an incomplete condition, why this one!? Why the Big One? Of course, I devoted the next year or so of my life to bitching about this fact whenever remotely possible, until one day, from out of the blue, our very own flambay contacted me, with news that was not just exciting, but downright STARTLING.

Not only was this second source out there - this second source, containing nearly ten minutes of breath-taking Deathless Horsie jamming - but, in a development which I had completely forgotten about, it was a COMPLETE version of this second source. In other words, a version which could be used for - wait for it - PATCHES!

Yes, the original source of this show was a very nice sounding recording, but suffered from one major flaw: Of the four extended numbers (Pound, Little House, Packard, Black Napkins / Deathless), only one of them did not feature a tape-flip at some point. Nothing more frustrating than hearing that delicious guitar slam kick off the solo section to Packard Goose, only to be yanked back to reality as the violin solo quickly fades out.

Well, okay, plenty of more frustrating things (tapes running out with no replacement, for instance), but still, tape cuts suck.

Long story short: Thanks to flambay, each and every tape cut has been patched with the alternate source, which sounds a bit darker (strangely devoid of ambience - maybe it's the balcony recording? Who knows!), and each and every minute has been speed corrected.

While there -may- be an even more superlative version out there (the patch source claims to be from a master recording, but shows clear signs of NR), this is still at the very least 95% "as good as it gets" (the main source being a probable second-gen), and sometimes - very, very rarely, but sometimes - the prospect of a little post-holiday surprise trumps Official Procedure.

For even more thoughts on this show ("the show of shows" itself!), or just something to get you even more psyched to get this little nugget downloaded, check out Foggy G's take right here, and if you still can't get enough, head on over to this entry on the sadly-defunct FZ Tape Reviewer's Society. Just ignore all those words about tape-flips - none to be found here Very Happy
