Time: 95m (audio) / 76m (video)

Personal note:
A great show in near perfect quality (audio). This was at the benefit festival for Greenpeace: "Soundwaves for Greenpeace". Some of the best classic Cure songs are played and the show is very energetic. 'Pornography' sends shivers down your spine. Robert's hair was at its best these days ;)

Quality:
AUDIO: Near perfect. One of the better audience recordings I have. Full show (besides the 'Relax'- intro)
VIDEO: Definitely a VHS rip. Quality is pretty good for an old VHS tape.
The audio is a bit distorted on the low notes, but good to listen to.
The vocals are very clear.
Sadly the last 2 songs (the best of the show) are missing.
Also 'Shake Dog Shake/Play for Today/A Strange Day/A Forest' are cut.
The perfect audio-version makes up for that. According to cure-concerts.de this was shot with a 'Ferguson' camera. All songs are chaptered.

This recording registers David Gilmour's first ever presentation in Brazil.

Just to put this into context, one have to understand the idolatry level Pink Floyd achieved here in this country. Not necessarely true respectful and knowledgeable fans (they are aorund, en masse) but many for the more "fashionable" and cool aspects of "following" on something that is famous and popular. Also one should consider people's hunger and demand for a gig such as this. Bear in mind Brazilians are not particularly known for their quiet speech and introvert characters. I found out the crowd in São Paulo (which included people from all around the country) to be specially hostile and ungraceful. An average Paulista won't say "please, excuse me" he (sometimes she) will more likely say "get the f@#k out of the way".

This gig is an extra date they added to the South American tour schedule after the initial sales for the December 12 date sold out overnight. This date had chairs added to the front of the venue, at exorbitantly space high ticket prices. The crowd was very diverse, age wise, which was nice. As it is common in Brazilian culture, many people were drunk out of their minds, though... An estimated 40 thousand people attended this show, which pretty much stopped all the traffic in the vicinities of the Stadium, in the already complicated friday evening streets in this chaotic American megalopole. Many people entered late into the concert. Thus all the angry Paulistas shouting people to sit down...

Location: I was around 20 m way form the left stack in what I think was a favourable setting, although people transited in front of me during the whole concert.

It was indeed a lovingly (magic) evening and the sound in the stadium was pretty decent, even though it reverberated/echoed a bit and sometimes a bit boomy. During the intro for Sorrow, I could feel my body vibrating along the "stadium guitar sound". Money started with no bass and was aborted. While wating a bit too long, David offered a few improvised chords, before being interrupted by the bass. After a second try, it was still not ready to go. Only during take 3 the song launched.

There is an abrupt volume switch down during Fat old sun. In the middle of Run like hell all "hell" broke loose and the people started ignoring the rules (it was quiet ironic, since the staff were acting like worm soldiers yelling people to sit down) and the wealthy masses rushed to the front of the stage, prompting us all to stand up and "fighting" for individual space. About what I commented earlier on peolple being drunk out of their wits, this recording bears testimony to this, unfortunately, as you will notice during the encore, which was partially spoiled by a very inconvenient young individual.

I have to say this: If Waters is the master of ideas and concepts, Gilmour is the master of melody, mood and feeling. I have rarely been so moved by the music in a concert as that night. Pure magic.

For you, damned souls thinking of selling this over the internet or on local shops, here is what I say: DON'T!

Here is a list of potential boot titles, though:

What a lovely evening to be in São Paulo.

We were just trying to see if you were paying attention...

Where the f@#k is it?

Take 3, go!

Do whatever you like with it, as long as you don't sell it in any way. I won't be doing a CD-ready version of it, so feel free to dither, remaster or whatever you feel like doing. Use it exclusively for personal, archiving and educational purposes only.

Occasional artifacts (tracks 10, 13) most probably due to extracting from an older CDR. Tracks 7, 9, 10, and 13 were edited due to noise level dropouts. No editing has taken place besides a few slight cuts and amplification changes.

Although circulating as a soundboard I believe this is in fact a great audience recording!

RIVERSIDE, LATE SET
The 11 pm setlist at Webber Hall brings some welcome changes from the early set. The wonderful “St Dominic’s Preview” mixed with “Walk on the Wild Side” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” returns, and we also get the first ‘75 tour recording of “Blue Money.” Released on His Band And The Street Choir, “Blue Money,” is a relative rarity, with only 18 known performances prior to this one according to the authoritative set-list histories found at vanomatic.de.

But even more exciting is the first known live version of “I Have Finally Come To Realize,” a song recorded at the Record Plant in Sausalito within days or weeks of this show, but not released officially until 1998’s The Philosopher’s Stone. Van introduces it by saying he’d “like to do a recent song” and delivers a wonderful reading. There are only ten known performance of the track, all from 1998 and 2002, so JF’s recording is indeed a major find.

Happily, the high quality of the early Riverside recording carries over to the late show which sounds every bit as good. Samples provided.

Once again the band is: John Blakely on guitar; Mark T. Jordan on keyboards; David Hayes on Bass; and Tony Dey on drums.

Here’s what JF recalls about the Riverside shows:

“This was the fourth show in a mini-Van marathon – two shows the previous night in Irvine, the second of two this night in Riverside and one more on the afternoon of the following day in Santa Barbara. There were no seats here – people just gathered around the stage on the floor of the college basketball stadium and danced or just hung out and listened. I stood back by the sound booth in the center of the hall, warily eyeing Van’s sound people so they wouldn’t catch me recording and secretly wishing I could tap into their line feed from the stage.”

Thanks to JF, who reached out on DIME (you could be next!) and offered us his archive, which had been sitting in boxes, 6000 miles away from where he lives today, for 20+ years. Like so many early tapers, he had great stories to tell and the memories flooded back as we sorted through tapes. We are pleased to be able to bring his work to all of you. Please let him know through your comments that you are, too.

We also appreciate the unnamed Van collectors for helping to get JF’s masters back in his control. And finally, special thanks mjk5510, who continues serve as JEMS’ post-production and quality-control supervisor. He is essential to our process and we couldn’t do it without him.

notes from DDemon72: Tickets for this Tool/Failure show were in high demand. They were announced on 2/13/2014 just 39 days before the show. Right at 10:00 on the Valentines day I had 2 PCs up with 2 browsers. All browsers where in a spinning wait state. Then at 23 mins after I finially got a response on one browser. The seat was to the right side of the stage about 14 rows up. Not a very good seat. Then shortly after my other browser indicated the show was sold out. So it was a bad seat or no seat. The sound was rather boomy where I was seated. Security was also strict about no cameras so not much in the way of pictures. Still this is the only recording I've seen of this show.

Filmed while Rory was touring in support of his last real studio release, which was 1990's "Fresh Evidence." Rory played five songs from that album at this performance. By 1991 audience video standards, I'll charactize the video and filming quality of this source tape as being "decent." I've seen better videos from this era, but I've also seen many that were much worse. It's a handheld shot that is never perfectly steady, but the shake isn't bad enough to be annoying IMO. The videocam couldn't handle the bright lights, and throughout almost the entire show, the spotlight is on Rory. So his face, hands, and light colored guitars are often over-exposed. The rest of the band members look great and are almost never over-exposed. The filmer kept the auto-focus on the entire time, so occasionally, the camera gets a little out of focus (probably due to light changes and old analog videocam technology).

The video starts off mostly with a stage shot, but at the start of the fifth song on DVD #1, the filmer moved in and gets a nice closeup shot (waist to head high) for the rest of the show.

Only the first half minute or so of "All Around Man" is in the video - at that point the videotape ran out on the filmer (must have had a 2 hour videotape in the videocam). The remaining audio after that is from the soundboard only. There is a little audio glitch at the beginning of last song on DVD #2.

The audio on the videotape is about what you'd expect for a video from the early '90s (in other words, it's not very good). However, I wanted to capture some of the audience noise and venue ambience, so I included the videotape audio in the production. Between songs, it's at normal volume, and during the songs I reduced it -12 dB (which would barely be audible by itself - but loud enough to just be able to hear the occasional hooting and whistling). When Rory is talking between songs, the audio is a little "boomy" because it includes the audio coming from the videotape or normal volume. As soon as the band starts playing, that's the point where I reduced the videotape audio, so sometimes you'll be able to hear the transitions where I reduce the videotape portion of the audio. Overall, however, I think having the audience cheering in between songs makes for a much more enjoyable DVD, so I think it's a good trade-off.
