Most commonly called 'Nick Lowe and his Noise to Go' they worked together through 1982 and 1983. This is a nice FM broadcast which went out over the airwaves across the country. [83:49]

This is from a cassette tape that I copied from my friend Tim Sharp in 1979. An excellent performance captured by a live FM radio broadcast. Two thirds of this is recorded in mono with the middle third in true stereo. It may have been that the mono switch on Tim's receiver was used to improve reception.

Copied from Tim's master "off air" cassette to my Revox B77 reel then to my Sony DAT recorder at 16/48. Transferred to 16/44 wav files and cleaned up numerous dropouts and defects with Audacity. With the exception of the tape flips you will not even notice them.

The bad:
Tape flip in "Still Falls the Rain" and is at 29:24.
During "Ladytron" (between 54:41 and 54:43) there is 2 seconds of static from FM interference.
Next tape flip is during "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" which was spliced at 61:49 or 5:26 of track 12.
Although a couple of seconds were lost the splice is nearly transparent.

The phase was off by 20 samples of which number were removed from the right channel to line this up. An immediate improvement in the sound balance was noted after this correction. Before correction the right channel was very weak and it affected my first torrent of this show.

Pink Floyd - 1968 - Belgian TV (DVDfull pro-shot)

(DVDfull pro-shot)

Pink Floyd
Belgian TV 1968 (HRV DVD 014)
40th Anniversary Edition

Video: NTSC
Audio: PCM Stereo

The RTB Films, 18 and 19 Feb 1968
01 - Astronomy Domine
02 - Scarecrow
03 - Corporal Clegg
04 - Paintbox
05 - Set The Controls
06 - See Emily Play
07 - Bike
08 - Apples & Oranges

David Gilmour made his film debut with Pink Floyd by recording this series of promotional clips for Belgian TV. Four of the films were shot at RTB TV studios and the remainder in and around Parc de Laeken on the 18th & 19th of February. "Apple & Oranges" was broadcast on the RTB pop music program Vibrato on 27 February. The remaining films, including a photo montage set to "Bike", were shown consecutively as part of the Tienerklanken pop music show broadcast on BRT TV on 31 March.

Kastival Open Air Festival 31 August 1968
Astronomy Domine

Pink Floyd performed in the afternoon on the 1st day of this 3-day festival. The event was filmed by BRT TV and highlights were shown on the Tienerklanken pop music show broadcast on 8 October in a featured segment called "Kastival '68".

Lineage: BBC Reels (format unknown) > DVD-R (PAL) > MPEG-2 (NTSC)/PCM Audio
After years of searching for a significant upgrade of these videos, an unexpected surprise just seemed to fall right into my lap. A very kind, and anonymous, member of Yeeshkul sent me a DVD that was transferred right from the BBC's existing reels. I demuxed the VOB files using VOB Edit, then ran the M2V file through Canopus Procoder for a great NTSC conversion. I remastered the audio from the original broadcast, balancing levels and adding a bit of NR to "Scarecrow" but this is being offered as a 2nd audio track. The main track was assembled by MOB who used various different sources to create an amazing sonic upgrade for these clips.

The audio for the main program (from Astronomy Domine to Bike) was carefully analysed and we arrived to the following conclusions:
- the 3 tracks from The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn are simply the regular versions from the stereo album, converted to mono for the TV broadcast (BRT did not use the mono version of the album)
- Paintbox and See Emily Play were taken from the mono singles (the stereo version of Paintbox would only be released 3 years later, on the 1971 Relics compilation)
- Corporal Clegg and Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun were not officially available at the time (these promo videos were filmed more than 4 months before the official release of A Saucerful Of Secrets album), therefore the audio versions from the BRT TV show are very unique early mono mixes. The difference with the regular version is obvious for Corporal Clegg, with an alternate ending, much more Syd's guitar lines in the background, and a surprising high speed compared to the album version (this track was probably slowed down during the mixdown of the album). And even if Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun sounds similar to the regular version, this is also an early mix, different from the album version (an obvious moment is during the instrumental part before the last verse, where birds noises were added for the album version, and are totally absent here).

Since our source for the TV show had superb video quality but a rather hissy sound, we decided to provide a superior audio track, recreating the mono broadcast audio from CD sources, except for Corporal Clegg and Set The Controls, for which we used the best available "Belgian mono mix" versions floating around ("A Tree Full Of Secrets" for Corporal Clegg, and "Have You Got It Yet? V2.0" for Set The Controls, for which we did some editing in order to correct an "imperfect" patch on the HYGIY version). The resulting experience of watching this 40 year old TV show with superb images and pristine audio is the best you'll ever get! For purists who want to hear the original broadcast audio with hiss, we put this as a second audio track to the DVD.

For Apples & Oranges, the video was taken from a 2nd gen VHS tape copy and the audio was taken from the mono single. This clip also appears on the PFVA 1 DVD.

For the last track, "Kastival 68", the video and audio were taken from the only available source (until now), i.e. the FLV video from YouTube. Some EQ was applied to the rough audio in order to avoid "ear bleeding". ;-)

Thanks again to the anonymous Yeeshkul member for the BBC transfer!

Seamless transfer, suggested break for CD burning above...

JEMS is pleased to release the fourth in a series of recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin in and around LA circa 1975-77.

Incredibly, our fourth installment is an alternative SECOND Millard recording from the final performance of Dylan's seven-night residency at the Universal Amphitheater in June 1978. That's right, the same performance as Volume 3 of our series, but a different recording made by Millard with a completely different rig. In addition to his familiar AKG 451E mics (CK-1 capsules) > Nakamichi 550 set up, Millard ran a pair of Nakamichi CM-50 microphones into a Uher CR-240 cassette recorder. We believe this is the first verified example of Millard recording on different gear and he uses the same set up for future shows in our series.

Nakamichi CM-50 photos http://www.nakmics.com/nak-cm50.htm
Uher CR-240 photo http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Uher-cr240_hg.jpg

This recording also marks the first time in the run that Mike was able to capture the show from the very start, the instrumental version of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." So we get the beginning of the show, but not the full encore, as the last song of the night, "The Times They Are A-Changin'," is omitted. (Note: It can be found on the Vol. Three recording of the same performance.)

The question you are probably asking yourself right about now is: OK, that's all interesting minutiae, but which recording is better? I would give the nod to this one, which sounds just a tad sharper, clearer and fuller. Samples provided.

Lossless Bob has no fewer than five entries for this show, though only identifies two distinct recordings, both of which are complete, so, like its predecessors, it is likely this Millard master is uncirculated.

We've marked this Recording B to distinguish it from Mike's other tape from the night. The notes on each reel (see image in the comments) clearly state that Mike himself made both recordings, so while there is no other known case where Millard ran two rigs, we can only assume that on this night he did or perhaps he did so with an uncredited partner, as we know he frequently had helpers.

Speaking of those helpers, JEMS' Millard series has sparked a lot of comments and dialogue. A fellow taper we've gotten in touch with was one of those helpers who attended many shows with Mike. He wanted to let folks know that despite what you may have read, Mike was no loner. He had several close friends, many of whom shared his passion for music. Whoever drew that conclusion and perpetuated the loner profile was mistaken.

If you'd like to learn more about Mike the MICrophone, the links below offer a glimpse of his story.

Thanks again to WG for finding the tapes and to SG for providing JEMS with another fascinating chapter of taping history. Also, JEMS is deeply appreciative of the work of mjk5510 for his continued assistance in getting these recordings into your hands. He is a vital part of the process at this point.

Here's to the late, great Mike the MICrophone and to finding more lost tapes.

11. 19th June 1980 CHOM-FM Interview with Tony Banks 12:00

June 19th, 1980! I remember that day as clearly as if it was yesterday! Genesis, my favourite band, were to play in Montreal that night for the first time in almost two years. Sitting alone in the living room of my parents' house, I was listening to the radio, CHOM-FM to be more precise, hoping to catch some news about the forthcoming performance. Suddenly, the answer to my prayer! The radio announcer, who’s name I have forgotten with time, gladly reports that Tony Banks of Genesis will be coming in later for a pre-show interview. My heart starts to beat faster as I scramble through my huge stack of cassette tapes, trying to find one with enough free space to record the event. With my finger standing by the ‘record’ button, my eyes staring at the table where my very own ticket for the second night’s show lies, I anxiously await Tony’s arrival on the air. But the man is late, caught in heavy traffic somewhere. “Patience, my friend !”, I start telling myself. “The man will be there soon enough!”

As I sit and wait, I can’t help but think of how big a week-end this is going to be in Montreal. The summer is just starting, the province of Quebec’s National Holiday is just around the corner (June 24th), school’s out for everybody and Genesis are in town for two nights! What a way to start the summer!

Tomorrow, June 20th, I will travel to Montreal to see the second night’s performance at the Forum. Meanwhile, at Olympic Stadium, boxers Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard will come head to head in one of the most talked about fights in the history of the sport. Very big week-end start indeed!

“Tony Banks has arrived!”, a voice says, pulling me from my inner thoughts. I push the button to start the recording and closely listen to Tony’s interview. When it is all over, I turn off the radio and put my “Duke” LP on the old turn table. Leaning back in my chair with my hands behind my head, I begin to daydream again about the Genesis concerts, about how much I regret not having tickets for tonight’s show as well. “Well!”, I start to think, “I may never get to hear tonight’s performance, but what I will see and hear tomorrow night, no-one will ever be able to take away!” I didn’t know it at the time, but on that blessed day in Montreal, June 20th 1980, I would buy a copy of a fantastic new book about Genesis, written by a guy named Armando Gallo. Minutes later, while waiting for the Forum doors to open, I came face to face with ... Armando Gallo! What I also didn’t know at the time was that, after some 24 years, I would finally get to hear the June 19th performance, which I had missed, on this great album you are now holding. Hidden for years, this amazing soundboard recording has now surfaced. We at PRRP are mighty proud to bring it to you as a way to celebrate our 1st Anniversary!

Notes from the Re-Master
This Genesis show was provided as a .SHN format soundboard recording. The quality is quite good with music signal up to 13,000 Hz but hiss and other sources of noise were found to be a major problem. Hiss was reduced using a number of different techniques as the characteristic of this noise changed between the music and dialogue sections of the show. Miss-tracking errors were found and corrected during the re-tracking process. Numerous clicks, pops and small dropouts were also found and repaired. Detail and “atmospherics” were enhanced as much as possible. Two patches were needed to fill gaps within the show. Another soundboard recording from this same 1980 tour was used for this purpose to match the feel and style as closely as possible. The other major problem with the show was the speed and pitch of the recording. The original version was clearly off both pitch and speed. Fixed time segments within the show were calculated and compared with other similar shows and the studio versions of the songs. Different speed and pitch versions were produced and reviewed by the PRRP staff to confirm the best sounding, final version.

The amount of music on each final remaster disc was re-balanced once the decision to use the interview was made. The interview segment came from a cassette tape used to record the radio broadcast. This was generally a good recording but suffered from significant volume fluctuations that needed repair. Commercials and songs presented between the interview segments were removed as well as hiss and a transmission buzz that interfered with the dialogue. Finally, the volume of the interview was matched to the show for a smooth transition.
