Badfinger - 1974-03-31 - Cambridge, MA (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

Badfinger
The Performance Center, Cambridge, MA
March 31, 1974

While this is a mighty fine set on its own (two sets, actually!), I guess that at this point in rock history reconsideration it's better known as "that time Badfinger 'closed' for Big Star's still-officially-unreleased mighty bitchen March '74 show in Cambridge" (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=188420). Which is fine. Some clown wrote in Uncut (a magazine I otherwise like a lot) that Big Star had "as many hits as they deserved" — that guy's gonna get bitch-slapped by ME real effin' quick. But I digress! The thing is this double Badfinger show deserves to be on the tracker again, so here it is, with minimal Manimal modifications:

- Added pdf artwork created by a Dime member back in 2008, I believe (thanks!)
- Added tags, including "digital artwork" taken from the aforementioned pdf
- Changed filenames
- Created new ffp and md5 files

Here is the ready to burn HD Video for anyone who wants it,see below for details on how to do it if you dont know, my personal tips for this are 1. use good quality disc (verbatim are good),2. burn slowly 2.4 is ideal 3.Verify disc and 4. while its burning dont do anything else on your PC

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Thanks for this tutorial STLBlues

This is a High Definition video which can be burned to a standard DVD-R or DVD+R blank disc. The resulting disc can only be played in compatible Blu-Ray devices such as a standalone Blu-Ray player, Playstation 3, or BD-ROM drive. This cannot be played in any DVD player, including some DVD-ROM drives, after it's been burned. However, the files can always be dumped back onto a computer hard-drive after it's been burned with any DVD-ROM or BD-ROM drive. For computer playback, you must have the appropriate hardware and software applications. At a minimum, you will need a 2.0Ghz Dual Core CPU with at least 256MB of
graphics memory. There is also the option of recording to a solid-state memory card (SDHC, Memory Stick), then played from many Blu-Ray disc players, PS3, or select Panasonic HDTV's.

PLEASE NOTE:
Your standalone Blu-Ray player must be capable of AVCHD playback. Most Blu-Ray players are capable of doing this.

BURNING INFORMATION:

Any tool to burn a disk will do, but it must be able to burn a DVD using the UDF 2.50 file system. The UDF 2.60 file system is also acceptable. Nero Burning ROM can do this starting from version 7. You can also use free tools like ImgBurn, which can be downloaded from www.imgburn.com.

Imgburn Step-By-Step Instructions:
* First, switch to "Build" mode by selecting Mode > Build from the main menu.
* For source, select the directory that contains BDMV directory.
* For target specify any name and location of your liking, this is where the disc image will be written.
* Select Options page in the tabbed notebook on the right, specify UDF file system, revision 2.50.
* Keep "Recurse subdirectories" checked.
* Press the folder icon > disc icon button to write the image.

After this process is done, locate where you saved the image file (.iso), then burn to a regular DVD-R or DVD+R disc. If using a standalone Blu-Ray player, make sure it will play which ever disc (-R or +R) you are using. I recommend using a burning speed of 4x or less.

Once completed, you now have a high definition video on a regular DVD ready to be played on your favorite Blu-Ray device.

JEMS loves to present vintage taper series and we're pleased to inaugurate another one, this time from the archive of our new friend JF, who taped in and around Southern California in the '70s and later resumed taping in Boston in the '80s. He frequented smaller venues, like the Troubadour and the Roxy, leaving arenas to others and leaning more towards the folksier, jazzier and eclectic sides of rock.

His '70s tapes were made on what I would describe as the kind of rectangular, portable, C-cel powered cassette recorder that my family and surely many others had in the '70s, either a Panasonic or a Sony (we're looking through internet pictures to figure out which one). While I used ours to record myself, my friends and my sister around the house, the teenage JF figured: Why not try taking it into concerts?

I only learned what recorder JF used after I had heard some of his tapes and I have to say I was mildly shocked. Given the gear, his tapes are remarkably clear and judging by his recordings from the Troubadour, he knew the right place to set up.

We kick things off with a fine representation of JF's work at the Troub, capturing a highly entertaining and previously uncirculated set by Tom Waits. It is an appealing, you-are-there sort of recording that seems to balance the music and the ambiance just right. Samples provided.

You might have noticed above that JEMS transferred from a reel to reel source. That's because JF, due to tight budgets at the time, routinely transferred his master tapes to reels in order to save money. Because he recorded the masters in mono, he would dub the finished recording onto a single track of a reel, allowing him to fit four or more shows on a single 7" tape and reuse the cassette for the next show. That wasn't true in all instances, but it is for most. And yes, in hindsight, he is still kicking himself about it.

And yet, based on the tapes we've transferred so far, JF did a fine job dubbing off his masters, and the Waits reel doesn't sound any worse for wear despite the one-generation loss.

JF was also an active trader at the time and we've already found a few uncirculated gems from the early '70s in his archive that we'll be getting in the series as well.

While I'm only an appreciator and not aficionado of Tom Waits, I thoroughly enjoyed this recording as he gives nearly every song a long, at times hilarious introduction. It ends on a fine note, too, with covers of Sam Cooke's "Cupid" and Peggy Lee's "Fever."

Thanks so much to JF, who reached out to us on DIME and offered to let us curate his archive, which had been sitting in boxes, 6000 miles away from where he lives today, for 20+ years. Like so many early tapers, he had great stories to tell and the memories flooded back as we sorted through tapes. We are pleased to be able to bring his work to all of you. Please let him know through your comments that you are too.

Thanks as well to mi amigo, mjk5510, helping make the JF series happen.

Dvd of the concert Mark Knopfler gave at Nimes on the 22md of July of 2010, as bonus track i added 3 songs from the concert in lyon the day before. All videos were downloaded from YOUTUBE IN FULL HD, both video and sound qiality are very very good. This is a multicam dvd so despite being a "youtube dvd" it's really a must have, at least until someone makes one with the original sources... overall i used 6 cameras and here i explain them:
Camera 1: recorded the entire concert, front and far from the stage but with a lot and very nice close-ups.
Camera 2: recorded about half of the songs right and far from the stage.
Camera 3: recorded 9 of all 15 songs a little bit left from the stage but very very close to it.
Camera 4: recorder every song but on most of them it just recorded about a minute and a half of them, on Telegraph road, Brothers In Arms, Speedwat At Nazareth and Sultans Of Swing it filmed almost the entire solos.
Camera 5: Only filmed a small part of Speedway At Nazareth
Camera 6: Only Filmed a small part of Hill Farmer's Blues

Final comments:
just wanted to mention that i spent a lot of time (months!) on this project, i put a lot of heart and passion to it not only so i would have it in my collection but so that the rest of Mark's fans could have it (otherwise i wouldnt be uploading it  ). I really hope you enjoy it the same as i...

With the excellent sound quality of this recording, you will be able to experience one of the best live performances they 've ever done in Japan. Just crack the volume all the way up to the top and play it loud!!!!!!!!!!

The recording to PC of this concert was not quite as loud as I would have liked, it has therefore been boosted slightly using Multimaximiser. This has been set at a level that increases the volume withoutadding extra compression or limiting. The FM broadcast had quite enough compression on it, it just needed to be slightly louder.

+ True blends of the 'master aud tape' and the recently circulated audience tape recorded for radio broadcast from Watchit/gottogo99 (thank you!) at Dime and The Trader's Den.
* True blends of the audience and soundboard recordings.

By true blend, I mean that the two sources were run simultaneously and mixed to a new track.

Total length: 86mins 26sec

CD 1 Tracks 1-15 (48'06")
CD 2 Tracks 16-25 (38'23")

Background

One of the most storied recordings in Rolling Stones history. Apart from the obvious crowd problems (MJ: Well, there've been a few hang ups. But generally, ... you've been beautiful!), this was a pretty strong performance. The audience taping of the entire show must be--given the very difficult conditions--one of the most heroic recordings ever made.

Many versions of this recordings have circulated over the years, including the well-known bootleg The Killer Festival, Altamont 1969 (VGP-113). I think the best version of the audience tape currently available is the one gottogo99 posted at The Trader's Den in December 2008 (http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=67697). Please check over there for details. It's still running if you want the pure version of this tape.

What do we have here?

This version is true blend (or matrix) of as much of the show as is available from five different sources. Note that none of them had all the pieces. The idea was to get the best possible sound for each track, but retain all the crowd noise, reactions, etc. in the recording. The crowd was obviously an integral part of this event, I've kept all of that from all the sources.

Sources (in the order of the amount I used)

1) A (possible) copy of the master tape. Supplied lineage: master > 1st gen > CDR. This purports to be a lo-gen copy of the master tape, but it has a fade-in at the beginning of Jumping Jack Flash that is not on VGP 113. There are also other small edits and odd drop outs that are not present on VGP-113. This source also ran fast, and it has been pitch-speed corrected for the current version. I used the soundboard files as reference. This source has less hiss than VGP 113. And like all other versions of this source, it is stereo, most likely fake. I used this source as the base for my edits.

2) The soundboard recordings used for the Gimme Shelter movie. Supplied lineage: Gimme Shelter > Remastered (unknown label) > CD > aiff (xACT). I used Sympathy For The Devil (2) and Under My Thumb (2) from this source, and Gimme Shelter from A Shot of Salvation (Scorpio OM 90-64-17) to blend in with the aud recording. I like the sound of these blends; others may not. I think the Altamont Sympathy For The Devil is one of the best ever live versions, but it was extensively edited for the soundtrack. The beginning was badly edited, and Mick Taylor's solo was almost completely cut out (shame!). Keith's solo is very distant on the audience recording, but is now much higher in the mix. The audience "accompaniments" really add atmosphere. Under My Thumb (2) and Gimme Shelter were unedited on the soundboard recording, so the blends flow quite well.

Note that NONE of the tracks here are the original soundboard files that are commercially available.

3) The recently surfaced files supplied by Watchit/gottogo99 (http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=78161). I used this for the Sam Cutler Intro, Jumpin Jack Flash, and most of Carol. After that the tape speed problems really kick in.

4) A 4th gen recording. Supplied lineage: Singlepoint stereo mic (possibly a Sony) > portable mini reel to reel > 3rd or 4th gen tape > U2A AD converter > Dell Inspiron 3500 > cool Edit pro > Cdwav > cdr > EAC > SHN. This was the only lineage that was specific about the recording apparatus, but who knows whether it was correct or not. The taper photos from Gimme Shelter (see the Watchit files at TTD) and Ethan Russell's book suggests that neither of the known recorders were reel-to-reel. This source had the extra 1.30 mins introduction to Midnight Rambler.

5) The well known VGP-113 boot. The Killer Festival, Altamont 1969 (VGP-113): Silvers > EAC > Wav > Flac Frontend > flac 8. This commonly circulated source has significant tape hiss not present on the other sources I used, probably from crudely boosting the higher frequencies. It sounds way over processed to me. I used this for bits of audience reaction, tape noise etc. that was missing elsewhere.

How did I put this together?
I used source 1) as my foundation. This was speed corrected to approximate the 3 soundboard tracks, and had other manipulations added using Logic Pro 7 (Apple). The other sources were mixed in as required using Logic Pro's multitrack capability. I used hundreds of edits to produce the final version, but in particular: multiband compression, parametric equalization, linear phase equalization, gain adjustment, and cross fades between channels and songs. All of these edits were applied as minimally as possible, and each track was treated separately. In some cases an 8 track mix was used to get the best balance of gain and equalization across a particular song. No noise reduction was used at any point.

Final lineage: Mixing (Logic Pro 7)> bounced to aiff > track splitting on sector boundaries (Amadeus Pro) > Flac and SBE check (xACT).

The final recording does not sound as harsh as VGP 113; I prefer the balance and the overall sound. I think the blended tracks really add a new dimension to the recording. Others may prefer the unedited audience recording; but there you go--you don't have to keep this one.

Thanks to the many people who helped out with trades, info, and who took the time to answer my emails. Thanks also to siege72 at Dime for invaluable help with speed/pitch corrections.

Comments:
Excellent FM stereo thanks to a Radio 1 broadcast. Details as being a soundboard recording. Jimmy Page guests with band on Train and Walk This Way.
Short set as Aerosmith was co-headliners on the day with Whitesnake being last on.
