Recorded after GP's death but just prior to recording 'Pieces Of The Sky'

This sounds better than a hand-held cassette machine recording; it's purportedly a sound board, but it's not by any means what we think of as soundboard quality by today's standards.

From Bill De Young's article in Goldmine:
{After Gram Parsons's death} Emmy moved back to D.C., where Tom Guidera had also become a country music convert. With pedal steel player Danny Pendleton and two other musicians, they put together the Angel Band and started gigging around the clubs, playing some of the songs she’d performed with Gram. Eddie Tickner made Harris his number one priority and he convinced Mary Martin, an A&R representative from Warner/Reprise Records (the label that had released Parsons’ solo work) to investigate an Angel Band show in a Washington nightclub.

Emmylou Harris became a Reprise Records recording artist in 1974; with her daughter Hallie in tow, the Angel Band relocated to Los Angeles to begin work on Harris’s first true solo album.

To produce, Martin paired Harris up with Nova Scotia native Brian Ahern, the mastermind behind Anne Murray’s spate of hits in the early 70’s. She brought the quiet Canadian to hear the Angel Band, and he recorded the performance on a hand-held cassette machine to study at home.

From http://prrp-music.org/prrpgs015/index.htm:

"This remaster project began with the master tapes of the show. This source has previously been uncirculated, a new find for the Genesis community. The show is complete here, except for tape flip gaps. Because the taper wanted to capture the whole Duke Suite on a separate tape from the rest of the show, additional points of swapping tapes occurred, which, in turn, resulted in additional gaps. These needed to be patched. There is a widely circulated, poor quality, alternative source of this show which was used to patch these gaps. There is a significant difference in the quality of these two sources so the patches are rather obvious when they are encountered. We felt it was better to patch the gaps with material from this actual show, to maintain the historic consistency, rather than use higher quality material from a different show. Once the gaps were patched, the show was put together in the original order and sequence. The tapes were digitized in 32-bit, 44.1 kHz format for the work.

Speed was an issue with this recording. A close analysis showed a fairly consistent speed error throughout the show that was easily corrected. The acoustics of the venue also worked against us. The hall characteristics and the location of the taper produced a tonality imbalance that needed correction after the speed error was fixed.

Hiss, hum and other tape noises were readily identified and reduced as much as possible. The auto-record-level feature introduced unintended suppressions in the recording that needed to be restored and repaired. The microphones also had an uneven response and became more sensitive to midrange frequencies during loud sections of the music. Dynamic filters were necessary to fix this problem and even out the tonality throughout the show.

At some points during the show, the tonality shifts and becomes less detailed and more muffled. Corresponding directly with the taper about this, he remembers the security guards being out in force. This caused him to occasionally hide the microphones to avoid detection and this produced the tonality change. The stereo field also shifts quite noticeably at these points. These sections were adjusted as much as possible to correct the imbalance.

In some sections there was distortion of the recording. Many techniques were used and tried to correct the problem but eventually, decisions were made to optimize the sound at the expense of quality. Fortunately, they are not too obvious. The show was then balanced and tracked and converted to CD Audio, 16-bit format to produce the final result."

In the wake of the passing of our partner Jared (the J in JEMS), the JEMS Archive has moved south, giving me the opportunity/burden of going through thousands of tapes as well as several hard drives onto which Jared put many tape transfers he made in the last five or so years. Here’s another one of the latter, capturing the late Lou Reed on the Magic and Loss tour.

There was something immediately appealing about this show as soon as I started to master Jared’s recording. It is musically rich and Lou himself seems more melodic than usual. It’s also a fine capture, recorded to DAT with Sonic Studios’ binaural “eyeglass” mics which were in vogue with JEMS at this time.

I’ve always liked the sound of the Sonic Studio mics overall, their downside being they are omnidirectional, tending to pick up a lot of audience noise, and can sound distant in a big room. On this night the crowd is respectful for the most part and the capture feels close enough to satisfy. Samples provided.

As was often the case in the early days of our DAT recordings, when the prices of blanks was still hovering around the $10 per tape, Jared ends up switching from 16/48 to 16/32 in the back half of the show to fit the complete performance on one 120m DAT. Per DIME rules, this is disclosed in the lineage as a composite of a 16/48 and 16/32 native recording, which I have resampled to 16/44. Quality wise you will not notice the difference aurally, though you will see the frequency cutoff if you look on a Spectrum Analyzer, and who among us doesn’t these days? ;0

We shared the recording with frogster who sent some additional insights on the performance:

"What a great show! The quality is superb! I expected the usual "JEMS quality" that many of us, the DIME members, are used to, but this is something stellar.

About the sound, while i said that this is something stellar (in fact, it is) it had its faults and there were a few things that needed to be corrected before this had to circulate. Mainly, everything was in its place, but the performance had very low volumes at some points (if you use VLC player, you'd hear these points if you had increased the volume to 200%).
I'm not a professional remasterer as much of the people are but i managed to remove some of them, while there were others i couldn't, so i shared this with fellow member acetboy, who helped me with these issues. His notes were:

"The original files had an RMS of -21.1 db and peeked at .8 db. Now it’s at -20.9 db RMS and it peeks at .2 db. About two and a half minutes into the original set 1 I could tell that the taper had boosted his recording volume. So bringing the first 2:30 minutes up to the volume that he boosted to, helped get the spoken part a bit louder. It took more than that though.
That spoken part at the beginning of the show that was so quiet is now almost 20 db louder than it was. Yet it all sounds totally natural, no sudden volume jumps that stick out.
I also boosted some talking one or two times later in the show also. The applause between songs is a bit more attenuated also. Once again sounding perfectly natural."

Now you can listen everything flow without these low volume points. I'll put some samples to show the before and the after. Thanks again to acetboy for the help in this show.

And if we talk about the performance, Lou seems really happy, making jokes between songs, introducing them and even explaining why he wrote them (like Harry's Circumcision).
About the music: if i were you, i wouldn't have any doubt about this. This is a solid performance, and if we take the fact that this concert (if we take away the time between songs and the encore break) was almost 3:30 hours of music, so i guess that makes you wonder: who performs for almost 4 hours these days?
I'm proud and happy this is circulating, as far i'm aware no recording of this date existed before now. A great performance, overall great sound, Magic and Loss is a great (and now classic) album, Lou knew the crowd was enjoying the concert and he made sure the money they paid was worth it."

1-13 are from a mid/late 1990s edited rebroadcast of the show, quality is near-mint. The last two songs are from an older dub of the show, the quality there is very rough. It's not unwatchable though and hopefully the quality of the rest of the show makes up for it.

Mick Ronson - The Man with the Golden Guitar BBC Radio 2
Duration:57 minutes
First broadcast:Monday 01 April 2013
Gary Kemp marks the 20th anniversary of the death of his guitar hero Mick Ronson with a celebration of his career. With a stellar guest list of musicians and fellow Ronno fans including Chrissie Hynde, Tony Visconti, Ian Hunter, Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey, Gary explains why Mick is such an important figure in British rock n roll, highlighting the important contribution Mick made to some of the most acclaimed albums in rock history and why his talent deserves to be celebrated. Mick rose to fame as lead guitarist and music arranger on David Bowie's albums, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs. Through his work with Bowie, Mick came to the attention of and subsequently worked with some of the biggest names in rock. Mick co-produced Lou Reed's Transformer album, enjoyed a stint with Mott the Hoople and then became a long-time collaborator with Mott's former leader Ian Hunter.
Mick was also a member of Bob Dylan's 'Rolling Thunder Revue' live band, and can be seen both on and off-stage in the film of the tour. He also made a connection with Roger McGuinn during this time, which led to his producing and contributing guitar and arrangements to McGuinn's 1976 solo album Cardiff Rose. Roger Daltrey employed Ronson's guitar on his 1977 solo release One of the Boys, and in 1979 Ronson and Hunter produced and played on the Ellen Foley debut album, Night Out, with 'We Belong To The Night' and the hit single 'What's a Matter Baby'.
In 1982, Ronson worked with John Mellencamp on his American Fool album, and in particular the
song 'Jack & Diane'. In 1992 Mick produced Morrissey's album, Your Arsenal. The same year, Ronno's final live performance was at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.

By speaking to those with whom he's collaborated (and playing the music he loves) we'll chart how Bowie's songs have evolved over the years. Featuring new exclusive interviews alongside rare and archive audio, we'll hear from many of the people he's worked alongside, including Dave Grohl, Frank Black, Nile Rogers, Neil Tennant, Tony Visconti, Rick Wakeman, Brian Eno, Moby and Billy Corgan.
