In May of 1988 Atlantic Records celebrated their 40th anniversary in New York City at Madison Square Garden. A grand mix of Atlantic artist performed ranging from the past to the (then) present. The actual concert lasted over 12 hours and portions of the concert were broadcast on HBO and simulcast on FM radio. My recording was taken from WNEW FM in New York and totals 5 1/2 hours in length. The entire show was never broadcast. Some artist’s sets were edited and some omitted entirely. The broadcast started hours after the event started so some of the performances shown were live while others were recorded earlier. To some extent the performances were not broadcast in their original running order with acts from earlier in the day inserted between the later acts and of course songs omitted to make room for them.

The HBO show and this simulcast are probably the most complete versions of the show in circulation. The HBO show has been posted here before: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...lantic+records. But as far as I know the simulcast has not. An edited down version of this concert was shown on ABC TV later this same year and then Atlantic Records released a video of the show which contained excerpts of the performance intermixed with archive footage of other Atlantic artists.

Quite an interesting array or artists spanning 40 years of Atlantic history. There is a section in the center of the show with various members of Booker T. & The M.G.'s featuring Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn along with Dan Akyroyd as his alter ego Elwood Blues. They are listed here as The Elwood Blues Review as dubbed so by Elwood himself. And of course the night concludes with the Led Zeppelin Reunion featuring Jason Bonham on drums. Quite a night.

There are a couple of glitches in this recording such as some static present in track 9 and a few other random spots. I don't know if that is an artifact of the broadcast or just my reception. I'm leaning towards an artifact of the broadcast. Also there is a tape flip at the end of Urgent and another at the end of People Got To Be Free with a short bit missing. Other then that the recording is complete. Enjoy!

Disc 2: Rare Videos
In the early 70's, the director of the program, Michael Lekebush (Michael Leckebusch) returned to the live format. What was a great rarity for TV programs of that time, and not only Germany. The invited artists enjoyed playing live on the set, often without limiting themselves to 1-2 numbers, and sometimes giving whole "concerts" for 30-40 minutes. The next issue of the program included, as a rule, 1-2 numbers from such concerts. Thus, in the archives of the transfer, about 400 videos accumulated, never being broadcast. Some of these concerts were shown in 2008-2009 on the 1festival channel as part of the transfer of Vinyl - The Lost Concerts. A complete list of the videos not shown in the transfer archives is available in the bookBeat-Club: alle Sendungen, alle Stars, alle Songs . (in brackets - the number of the transmission for which the video was recorded and the date of its broadcast.) If the number is not specified, the date of recording the video)

Add. Information: Compilation of the first half of the 70s. Spicks & Specks TV-Special is an Australian program that shows a press conference, filming a concert at Festival Hall, etc. Last year, Australian TV showed the original (and otherwise mounted) 9-minute story about a press conference (GTK). Also appearances on popular American TV shows have been added (Tonight Show and Mike Douglas Show are especially interesting). The sources of all records are VHS (except for GTK), the quality is not bad, especially considering the rarity of the material.

In 1975, in the midst of their second major period of stardom but before Saturday Night Fever would drive them to their greatest popularity the Bee Gees appeared on the Chicago based series Soundstage, performing a large selection of the repertory from the late 1960's thru the mid 1970's, up through "Jive Talkin'". The result is sort of the video equivalent of Here At Last, their mid 1970's live double album. The anonymous bootleggers who have put this out used a video master that was a generation or two off from what it ideally would be, resulting in a slightly fuzzy image at times, but the sound is impeccable. It's all essential viewing for serious fans of the group, capturing them in superb voice throughout and also doing more than alright on their instruments as well. Yvonne Elliman is the featured guest, but she never really has a chance to shine amid the three Gibb brothers voices.

Some background:
After the release of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, The Bee Gees were unable to tour due to their commitment to the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie. Then from March to November, 1978, they spent much of their time in the studio recording Spirits Having Flown, the follow-up album to Saturday Night Fever.

Prior to the kickoff of the tour, The Bee Gees popularity grew even further following Saturday Night Fever, when they were the headline act on the Music for UNICEF Concert in January. Then they won four Grammy awards in February for Saturday Night Fever and by June, they pulled off a feat only matched by The Beatles with six consecutive number one singles, when "Love You Inside Out" topped the charts in June, setting the stage for the hottest summer tour since The Beatles in 1964.

Considering the group's popularity was at an all-time high, stringent security precautions were taken, though The Bee Gees themselves setup base in only five cities. They would fly to the next venue and return to their home base immediately following the show. They leased a custom 55-seat Boeing 720 jet at a cost of over one million dollars with a specially designed logo on the exterior of the plane. The Bee Gees were accompanied on the tour by a film crew capturing highlights of the shows, for use in a NBC-TV special which aired in November, hosted by David Frost.

The Bee Gees were joined on stage with their usual band featuring Alan Kendall on guitar, Blue Weaver on keyboards and Dennis Bryon on drums, as well as Boonero Horns, a 6-piece brass section and Sweet Inspirations, which provided backing vocals.
