Magnificent recording and a top-notch sound for this show which marked the presence for a few dates of Jaco Pastorius on bass. The setlist was still heavily influenced by the Headhunters production but also features one track from the solo Bennie Maupin album called "Slow Traffic To The Right" (highly recommended!).

This is all circulates in the trading circuit but I am afraid this is not the whole show because there is no DJ outro and track 4 is not the last track of the show. maybe one day we will have the whole thing surfacing somewhere. But for now, enjoy this piece of jazz-rock history!

About About this recording
Early 1982, Jaco formed his own Word of Mouth Big Band, named after the title of his first Warner Brothers solo album. The big band was filled with some of the finest studio musicians, some old timers Jaco worked with before, and some newcomers. We didn't yet know it, but Jaco had left Weather Report and wouldn't return. To all of us, this was THE concert everybody anticipated.

Dorothy Chandler Pavilion isn't the best venue for a loud band; the Pavilion is better suited and home to the winter seasons of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. My seats weren't great, I was sitting slightly under the overhanging balcony. I learned in recording arts school, this might be the worst sounding spot in any auditorium. As I remember, my recording didn't sound that great. But I always knew there were other recordings of this show.

After my master tape was stolen in 1986, I was given a first generation copy from another source. I vaguely remember being told this recording was made about a dozen rows back, sitting right in front of the speakers. That's a great place to tape, and this copy sounded much better than I remember mine ever sounded.

In 2011 I finally met the guy who recorded the show, and I've been digitally archiving his entire tape collection ever since. So in 2011, my first generation copy was upgraded to the original master recording made on his Sony TC-D5M. The master sounds fantastic. While working on the show, I could see the benefits of the Nakamichi over the Sony decks. I could see on the sonogram that the Sony deck really falls off after 15 Khz, while the Nakamichi doesn't fall off until 20 Khz or beyond. But it doesn't matter because I can't hear that high anyways!

Jaco played in his usual manic style. We didn't know at the time he was suffering from bipolar disorder, and when I look back and hear the music today, I can certainly hear micro bursts of excessive creativity that seem to be short duration. But Jaco's playing is great; it's fantastic. When he plays Domingo, it's non-stop frenetic playing. There was a bad turn during Fannie Mae. I fixed it best I could, and most people probably won't even notice how I stitched it back together.

I'm sure many of you already have this show, as I've seen it on the torrent sites a few times before. I've even released my own version of the first generation copy. But today is an upgrade to master tape status!

Last but not least...Now that I have access to this master tape, there was one more surprise in store. When I was digging through my benefactor's boxes of master tapes, I also found a recording for the following night. The following night recording is only 95% complete, which probably explains why I don't think I've ever seen it circulate in any taping circles.

The Band (members there of) are already playing great, and when the guests show up, they play even better. I'm unable to make a sample on my work computer, but I personally give it a "A+"! It's impossible for it to be better. If you are a fan of The Band, you will surely love these! They are some of my all-time favorite shows by anyone. This is a 100% reseed, nothing was changed.
