There is a weird little cut in "Sorrow" - this is present on the original files Nipote shared. I didn't know what to do, really, so I split it into two seperate tracks at the cut, and faded them in and out.

Pink Floyd - 1971-08-13 - Melbourne, AU (AUD/FLAC) by Godfather Records

(Audience FLAC)

First Australian Show
Melbourne Festival Hall

Godfather Records (G.R.) 321

Lineage:
Silver CD > FLAC

01. Atom Heart Mother
02. Green is the Colour
03. Careful with that Axe, Eugene
04. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
05. Echoes
06. Cymbaline

Notes:
After three shows in the first ten days of August in Hakone and Osaka, Japan, Pink Floyd came to Australia for a tour of only 2 dates. It's their first visit there, and it'll remain the only one until January 1988, when they'll stay one month on their "Momentary Lapse Tour". This is the first of the two nights, the second one being played the day afterwards; outdoors at Sydney Racetrack, at 1 P.M. in the cold Australian winter (Nick Mason remembers having to play with gloves).

The show starts with 'Atom Heart Mother', this version being played without the brass and choir (too expensive to have 30 extra persons touring the Far East), and goes on 7 minutes less than official release, but anyway, the Floyd's are really inspired and play it with an agressive arrangement to compensate for the lack of atmosphere from the John Aldiss choir.

Then Waters introduces 'Green is the Colour/Careful with that Axe, Eugene', again played seamlessly with an impressive change of rhythm. 'Green Is the Colour' won't be played after these shows again, making more room for 'Fat Old Sun'.

The show keeps going with a burning and psychedelic 'Set the Controls...', and 'Echoes', a real suite officially released 4 months earlier in Norwich under the provisional title of 'Return of the Son of Nothing', and played only a dozen times so far. It is a song the Floyd's love so much, they will play it again in 1987, during the first shows of their "Momentary Lapse Tour". Even Gilmour will present the song again in his recent solo tours, having enthusiastic reactions from the audience. It's a song that crosses different moments, and that fascinates and surprises, for mixing inside a great number of different ideas - enough for 4 or 5 songs.

'Cymbaline' is a usual song that never betrays the audience; it doesn't have big surprises or improvisations, but surely is one of the most important moments of that show, even thanks to some videos.

This show is a gem on Pink Floyd's live history, and it's released on a silver CD for the very first time.

This show is significant for the fact that it contains possibly the last ever performance of 'Green is the Colour'. It certainly contains the last ever known recorded version, nontheless.

SQ-wise, this show holds up well considering the age of the recording, but the performance itself I wold rate an 8/10.

Pink Floyd - Celestial Instruments (click-free version by MOB)
The Paradiso, Amsterdam, NL
1969-08-09

01. Interstellar Overdrive
02. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
03. Careful With That Axe, Eugene
04. A Saucerful Of Secrets

This fantastic recording from Hilversum 3 Radio surfaced on 26Aug07, when TJ torrented it on YEESHKUL (see original torrent notes below). All credits should go to TJ and his anonymous source!

However, when listening carefully to the original files, I realised that they suffered from slight crackling and some clicks here and there (the track that suffered the most from these flaws was ASOS, with something like 50 glitches). Since this kind of flaw is not too difficult to clean manually (it's time consuming, but not very difficult with the appropriate tools), I did this "click-free" version.

So what you have here is basically the original recording, but without the glitches, clicks and crackles. ;-)

The sound of the recording was not altered in any way (the original quality was so great it did't need any improvement, and the speed was perfect).

Apart from the clicks correction, I just did some editing in order to avoid the fade-in/out between each track (so the listening experience is uninterrupted, with 40 minutes of a continuous" recording). I also swapped the channels, in order to have a mix that is consistent with the Ummagumma live tracks, i.e. the guitar on the left and the keyboards on the right (this mix therefore corresponds to the Floyd configuration on stage), while the original recording had the guitar on the right and the keyboards on the left. This choice of swapping channels was also motivated in order to have an easy way to identify the version of the show: if you have this recording with the guitar on the right, then you probably have the original recording. If the guitar is on the left, then you probably have the click-free version. ;-)

Someone graciously offered me this little golden nugget to torrent. Donated anonymously in order to protect future trading sources. Reportedly taken from the soundboard of the gig, this is a passage from Povey's ITF book on that performance: "Hilversum 3 Radio were recording this show for a future broadcast, but after a microphone failure early in the show the band were forced to perform an instrumental set and as a result the show was never broadcast". So we've got a short set of 4 numbers with absolutely no vocals, but the SQ is amazing, even before you take the age of the recording into consideration.

Original Liner Notes :
This concert footage was shot on three Betacam oxide (professional) tapes. It was shot by a pro crew (likely an MTV crew) but might have been hired by CBS records. The songs are all incomplete, and if some are only here in a very short part, some are still very enjoyable. There are several reasons for this. Clearly the crew had only one camera and was shooting for the purpose of B-roll editing, that is getting shots edited in between interview footage to produce one or more MTV segments news. The crew would have had no reason to shoot complete songs, much less the entire set. They may have also received clear indication not to record complete songs in order to prevent bootlegging. The last factor was that they only had three 20 minutes tapes which limited their capacities to record more than necessary. Also, keep in mind that the album had not been released yet, and the tour had not started. The crew didn’t know the new songs and had no idea of what would come next, neither in terms of content/interest nor in terms of visual event. That explains the many lingering dark shots. Also, don’t forget that this is raw, unedited footage. The source was originally supplied with the camera (audience) sound on one channel and the mixing desk sound on the second channel (except when the cameraman moved closer to the stage, no soundboard audio was available). We did a smart mix of both sources on one audio track and have kept the soundboard source on another audio track of this DVD.

This DVD offers for the very first time, the second, unreleased, part of the footage, consisting of the unedited interviews with (a very sarcastic) David Gilmour & Nick Mason, Robbie Williams and Morris Lyda. Further footage feature shots of the crew at work and more rehearsals.

All in stunning professional quality !!!

At the end of December 2020, the shocking new audience source of Hakone Aphrodite was released by Empress Valley. It is a great discovery that will overturn the date of conventional tapes. In this recorder, Goro Itoi announces in Japanese after the show: "The first day of Hakone Aphrodite, the first day of today, it has ended successfully thanks to everyone. Thank you very much." This means that this is the true source of the first day. In Set The Controls For The Heart Of Sun, you can hear a rare performance of that playing The Embryo sound effects. Please enjoy the new cassette master source that has been discovered after 49 years.

Who1Zep:
"I noticed two special versions that I do not know to be available on any other Floyd official or bootleg release. Young Lust had the special outro, without the phone call overdub. That's what I bought it for. (Incidentally, Comfortably Numb did not have the blip in the first second of the song, which is present on my regular Columbia vinyl release, the original Harvest CD and remastered Columbia CD.) The other special version is Run Like Hell, which I cannot recall ever hearing before. The overdubs were not present in either the intro or outro. Hearing Gilmour's guitar intro by itself was awesome. That is coolest short guitar part Gilmour ever did, and I was quite surprised to hear it by itself after all these years."

Digital Dan:
Thanks to Who1Zep's generousity in allow DR to use this rather rare and unique source, other Pink Floyd fans can also enjoy this special EP release. The LP itself was in excellent condition and relatively free of any surface noise or crackle & pop. Considering the lack of forthcoming from Pink Floyd or Columbia, this kind of rare material will likely remain in vaults with the master tapes not making it to CD. So this is about as good as it is going to get.
