To celebrate Kate's new album, here are some of the oldest Kate demos in circulation. I received them on a cd back in the early 2000's. Initially I thought they were sourced from the vinyl boot called 'The Early Years' which was released in Germany in the mid-80's but then listening to them I heard no vinyl crackles which may mean they are from a different source. Unfortunately there are only 8 of the 10 tracks that are known to exist from these sessions. Sound quality is ok although quite hissy. These are usually dated 1973 but again I have some doubts because:
a) in 1973 Kate was recording from home with a very rudimental recording devices where these demos seem to be recorded in a studio and
b) you can hear a much more mature and secure Kate playing and singing. My guess is that these come after Kate recorded at Air Studios (sessions paid by David Gilmour!), so possible around 1975-1976.

Notes:
Well I was inspired by god_61's 'Elevation Tour 15th Anniversary Flood' to revisit this one. I pulled out my original Buffalo 2001 ALD and matrixed it with this circulating AUD recording. This was one of my very early attempts at ALD recording... with somewhat good results. Along with many of the limitations of ALD systems, Buffalo's system is on a 'limiter'. I did NOT go back to the original master tape for this matrix, there are a number of much better recordings from this tour. Going back to the original Master would probably not enhance this much more that this. Originally recorded with a borrowed SONY D8. I did not have access to a digital transfer at the time. The D8 transfer to .wav is more than likely analogue. The original ALD post was mastered in Cool Edit Pro, with a custom delay (to fill out the sound)

This mix uses the original mastered ALD post. Mixed and time synced in Audition, with some minor EQ and plug in's. To match the original ALD post, some audience appreciation (encore clapping) was removed. I also removed the first 1:15 seconds of Trippy Elevation Mix (which was a patch from the Chicago 5-16-2001 show) Re-tracked in Cool Edit Pro (just because it's easier than Audition)
Added split track #7 for my friends Bruce and Mary Moser, who via their first USA tour, arguably, single handedly introduced U2 to the USA. (at 'Stage One' in Buffalo in 1980)

Alternate tracks 17 & 18 for CD splits are included

Notes:
So why would I spend weeks getting this mix just right? Who cares? Well, if there's one thing I've learned in the last few years of trading Springsteen and U2, you can never have too many good shows in your collection :-)

Another thing I have learned, is that ALDs, by in large, are crap. Nothing sounds worse, IMHO, than a pure ALD recording - and so it should - remember the purpose is to help hearing impaired individuals hear mid to high end sound. As bad as they sound though, ALDs are great for one thing though - enhancing already good audience recordings!

When I started collecting U2, and I asked people what the best recordings were from the Elevation tour, and many pointed me to the 05-03 Cleveland show - the ALD/AUD mix known as the "Cleveland Tea Party". For the most part, I agree. CTP is a great mix, but not without issues. I disliked the fact that in some places, there are significantly loud crowd reactions, bad singers, yellers, screamers... I thought of recreating the mix from scratch to see if I could improve upon it, then figured I'd try a different show and see what happened... This is the result.

04-28 is a great show to experiment with. The audience recording is almost perfect, with almost no fallouts or imperfections. This makes mixing infinatly easier. The ALD however is full of dropouts and digital noise, and that makes it infanetly harder. In all, I think it worked out evenly.

The ALD for this show is incomplete as well - the last 3 songs are missing. At first I thought it was kind of stupid to go to all this trouble and fall 3 songs short of a complete show, but after listening to the last 3 songs, and doing a bit of remastering on them, it's almost hard to tell they aren't mixed with ALD.

The ALD issues were mostly solved by experiment, but here's some of the things I used to get this as clean as possible:

First off, all tracks are converted to 32 bit. All editing is done in 32, then the tracks are mixed down to 16 bit. All this does is minimize the digital noise created by some of the editing procedures. Remember this if you ever try it yourself... ALD tracks are also all run through a hiss reduction process, as almost all tracks had some form of background hiss.

Digital artifacts were removed by a noise reduction filter that looks only for digital noise. There were 2 songs on this recording that were pure shite. The worst, was UTEOTW. My god what a mess. After removing digital noise, there was still parts of the song where the music was destroyed, and had to be recreated from scratch. I did this using various techniques, including:
- use an advance digital noise filter, and increase the volume on the filtered segment
- isolate the noise and remove it from the frequency spectrum (like the old EQ method)
- use another part of the song that is sonically the same (i.e. a repeating word or verse)
- take the same segment from the AUD recording, convert it to mono and remove the low end, remix it back to stereo, then mix paste it back into the ALD. This isn't that bad actually, and recreates the ALD fairly well.
- remove it. Last resort. This ends up sounding like a half-dropout, and not too bad. Always remember to fade your dropouts though, or they sound much worse...

In all, if you listen to UTEOTW, there are probably 2 or 3 places you can hear significant issues that couldn't be resolved to 100%. Not bad, considering the source.

In a few places, I removed heavy claps or screams from the audience recording as well. Easiest way to do this is splice in a quieter part from elsewhere in the show.

In all, I'm pretty happy with it. WOWY, my favourite song, had issues as well, and I was quite happy with what I was able to do with it. That's what convinced me to do the whole show.

This Japanese bootleg CD was released late last year, making shameless use of recordings that had previously been seeded on this very site - not to mention the parasitic use of photos pilfered from Philip Carly's site for the artwork. Here's two fingers in your face, thieves!

Comments:
Track 1 through 9 are demo and alternate tracks from "Big Generator". Rumor has it that these are the Trevor Horn produced songs, who left the project before it was completed.

Track 10,11,12 and 13 are Jon & Vangelis demos, and stated on the cover art to be recorded in 1986. Research suggests that they were recorded somewhere between the "Private Collection" album (1983) and "Page Of Live" (1991).

Notes
Legendary folk singer and balladeer Christy Moore - famed for his stunning vocals and thrilling live performances with guitar and bodhrán - is widely regarded as a key agent in the popularity of traditional Irish music in recent decades. Since the singer’s first major release “Prosperous”, recorded with future Planxty memebrs Liam Óg O'Flynn, Andy Irvine, and Dónal Lunny in 1972, Moore has released over 30 acclaimed live and studio albums as a solo artist, and as part of trad bands Planxty and Moving Hearts.Moore’s most recent releases are 2009 platinum-selling album “Listen”, which was his first in four years, and debuted at Number 1 in the Irish album charts, where it stayed for four weeks. Last year’s “Folk Tale” was produced by long-time collaborator Declan Sinnott, and features fellow trad greats Gerry O’Connor, Tim Edey, and Neil Martin with The West Ocean String Quartet.
