Jimi Hendrix - 1970-05-30 - Berkeley, CA (SBD/FLAC) 1st Show

(Soundboard FLAC)

Jimi Hendrix - Berkeley 1st Show - Complete Soundboard (ATM-0256/257)

Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California, USA
Saturday 30 May 1970 first show

Jimi Hendrix
vocals and guitar

Billy Cox
bass and vocals

Mitch Mitchell
drums

Speeches:
1st speaker Bill Graham
2nd speaker unknown

Recorded on 8-track by Abe Jacob with the Wally Heider mobile truck

This set is an uprade of ATM-0123/24 The Berkeley Concerts, now presenting the entire show in continuous uniform soundboard quality ("Star spangled banner" & "Purple haze" were completely missing from the older versions of the soundboard tape and the ATM discs as well as the start of both "Foxy lady" & "Freedom" and without the distortion audible on the previous ATM release.

The files are numbered from 1 to 13. In order to burn a 2 cdr set tracks numbered 1-6 should be burned on disc 1 and tracks 7-13 on disc 2.

Disc 1
1 Intro (cut at 2.56)
2 Fire
3 Johnny B Goode
4 Getting my heart back together
5 Foxy lady
6 Machine gun

Disc 2
1 Freedom
2 Red house
3 Message to love
4 Ezy ryder
5 Star spangled banner
6 Purple haze
7 Voodoo child (slight return)

It seems that all copies of the Berkeley soundboard tapes originated from Bob Terry. The Cooper Owen auction listings for the Bob Terry tapes include three reels with the 2nd part of the concert. It is however probable that Terry also had similar reels for the 1st half, for some reason omitted from the auction (like many other tapes Terry had), so very likely all of his Berkeley multitrack mixdowns were on 15 ips 10" Ampex reels or similar studio quality tapes.

It seems that Bob Terry circulated several different edits of his Berkeley tapes, this is why there are at least 3 different versions of the first show going around all originating from the same reels but with different cuts and missing tracks. The basis of this set was a low generation cassette originally received from Bob Terry that came into circulation in 2011. Unlike previous versions this cassette came directly from Terry and includes all of the music but has some cuts between songs.

This set uses a new transfer of that cassette (done on different equipment than the transfer circulated in 2011) as the main source with cuts between the tracks, some drop-outs, noises and the end of Voodoo child (slight return) patched with the dub/edit of the tape that was used for the previous ATM release 0123/24. The intro was taken from a third dub/edit (taken from a previous multi source composite version of the concert) with one cut patched with the main source.

There's only one cut remaining and that occurs pre-concert before Jimi enters the stage. It's unknown whether this is also present on the multitrack tapes but as the other edits on the various versions of the tape were "clean" and the sole remaining cut clearly has the tape speeding up after the cut. So it's quite likely that the cut was introduced by different equipment than the other cuts and thus could well be on the master tapes, possibly the multitrack deck was halted when the start of the actual concert was delayed.

There's no way to be sure if Bob Terry used his original reels to dub the cassette used as the main source here, it's also quite possible that he dubbed from a safety copy. So the lineage of the main source would read something like this:

Master (multitrack) > 15ips mixdown reel (> reel?) > cassette > wav

The exact lineage of the patch sources is unknown.
No eq was applied to the main source, it was necessary to invert channels and apply eq to the patches in order to make seamless repairs but some variation remains. Apart from the usual differences in hiss levels there were slight differences in the stereo image between the tapes, some tapes had wider stereo than others even though the actual mix of the instruments appeared to be the same. This difference was either introduced deliberately or is down to the copying process, either way some repairs/patches are not 100% inaudible because of this.

Pink Floyd - 1970-04-30 - San Francisco, CA (DVDfull pro-shot)

Live at KQED

DVD5 | 59mins | MPEG2 | PAL | 720x480 | 4:3 | 25fps | AAC 48kHz 224kbps | 3.9GB

“Very few Pink Floyd's shows have been recorded, especially dating from the 'golden age' of the Floyd (early 70's), when they invented a new style of rock.
This is one of the more celebrated recordings of The Pink Floyd filmed in KQED studios in San Francisco on the afternoon of April 29, 1970. ”

01 - Atom Heart Mother
02 - Cymbaline
03 - Granchester Meadows
04 - Green Is The Colour
05 - Careful With That Axe, Eugene
06 - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun

“The cheerful freaks who floated over stange fumes during the concerts of Pink Floyd's tour " Ummagumma " in 1969/70 had the privilege to see and hear the Graal, the electrical version of "Atom heart mother", never recorded under this form, as it was, from July, 1970 and the concert of Hyde Park, mixed with an arrangement of cords and brass orchestra which killed in the egg all its rocky lightnings. Since then, the fevered quest did not stop of filmed clips, bootleg albums, then at the age of the net, fragments of concerts with a more or less good quality in Florida or in Japan, of a show in BBC or a concert in Saint Tropez. And miracle, the without-public concert done for QKED was recorded with high video and audio quality, and reappeared recently.

In a studio without public, on April 29th, 1970, Pink Floyd on stage play a show where in an hour, alternately acoustical or electrical. They are going to build a mosaic of their three albums an hour, " Ummagumma ", "More" and "Atom heart mother".
It opens with " the thing ", 19 minutes of "ATM", its topic, its guitar riff, its cosmic ravings and final. "Cymbaline" and "Grantchester meadows" follow, and electricity again with "Green is the colour" chained with a furious "Careful with that axe Eugene" to finish in a languid way with "Set the controls for the heart of the sun".
The sound is very good, perfectly restored (from the 3/4" original master) and pictures come from a rebroadcast of the show in August, 1981. The film starts and ends with pictures of in-flight fields taken in low flying, with hyper-saturated colours, a bit "forced " but as a result well-deserved psychedelic style.
For those for whom true Pink Floyd is that former "Dark side of the moon", this concert will be the object to be cherished, so much the concerts of this tour were artistic and emotional peaks of the band. Each of four members is on his place, but with all his place, necessary piece of an enchanting jigsaw puzzle.

Duran Duran - 1994 - Demo's Thank You (STU/FLAC)

(Studio FLAC)

Info below is from Duran Duran Wiki: http://duranduran.wikia.com/wiki/With_Love_And_Thanks

With Love And Thanks is an unofficial Duran Duran compilation album, recorded between 1992 and 1995.

This is a collection of Duran Duran Thank You demos and live promotional performances.

"White Lines"
There are three versions of "White Lines" on the album, including a performance by Duran Duran on the US David Letterman Show. According to the Duran Duran Rare CD Guide site, the band were told at the last minute to cut down the song due to time constraints.

"Ball of Confusion"
The track is an uncensored version, with the lyrics "Politicians..Can You xxxxxxx believe them?"

"Perfect Day"
Track 3 is a recording very similar to the album version, but includes John Taylor singing backing vocals. The second version of "Perfect Day" and "Crystal Ship" (Acoustic) are from Simon Mayo's BBC Radio 1 breakfast show, aired in the UK. This performance on the Simon Mayo show also included an acoustic live version of "Ordinary World", which was released on the "White Lines" single CD and "Lay Lady Lay" Italian single.

"Thank You"
This is not the With Honors demo version, but a completely different recording.

"Plastic Girl"
The track is a live recording of Duran Duran's performance on the MTV Most Wanted show.

Bonus tracks:
"Dreamboy" and "Electric Barbarella" are not Thank You songs. "Dreamboy" is a Simon Le Bon solo song, recorded live at the Cannes Film Festival. The "Electric Barbarella" track 16 is a recording of a radio performance, and the Plastic Kiss Acoustic Mix is a re-edit of track 16.

There was a tape cut at appx 4:59 into "Morning Story". It happened very abruptly.I faded it out there and back into Jack's bass "noodling" part of his bass solo, as this was the  very best I could do to keep the show going  smoothly and not come to a "crashing halt" at that spot. I'm sure you will like the results.

notes:
this is the Cars recorded on their 1st national headlining tour less than a month after their 1st album had been released. it is the whole show except for the leadin intro music (which is basically a boston traffic jam of cars, the kind with wheels and especially horns, not these cars, since boston is famous for its awful traffic jams, not the kind with Steve winwood in them either.) some of the encore break radio babble, and a brief tape flip after "they won't see you" and before "take what you want" starts. no music was missed for the tape flip. this is probably recorded from a re-broadcast since it is recorded from a WNEW-NY FM broadcast. the show was originally broadcasted live as it happened on WBCN in Boston. only one song in here (nightspots) is from their 2nd album, "Candy-O". some of them were only available (studio versions, not from this concert) as demos until the 1999 expanded edition reissue of their 1st album. except for a 2011 album (Move like This) and a couple of years touring in 2005-06 with Todd Rundgren as lead singer, (and without Orr or Ocasek) the Cars have been the same original 5 piece band (from 1977-1987). as of this upload, the band's last concert took place at the House of Blues in the Cars hometown of Boston on May 26, 2011.

This one just turned up a few years ago and the sound is amazing. It's the earlist Police show available with them as a three piece band and the only known recording where they played "Dead End Job". This one's essential for any Police collection.

Here's an early Police show recorded in Boston in the fall of 1978. Recorded at The Rathskeller in Kenmore Square just a stones throw from Fenway Park, this Basement club was the premier venue for Punk and New Wave in Boston. A friend of mine's band played "The Rat" often and I can testify that it was as intimate as it was roudy. This show is originally listed as soundboard, however the sound is in Mono and was probably EQ'd at sometime.
