Pink Floyd - 1983-1993 - Secret Rarities (STU/FLAC)

(Studio FLAC)

Demos & outtakes 1983-1993

01. Like A Rolling Stone (David Gilmour demo 1983)
02. Like A Rolling Stone (David Gilmour demo 1983 - FM source)
03. Learning To Fly (Jon Carin demo 1986)
04. Learning To Fly (Jon Carin demo 1986 - FM source)
05. The Dogs Of War (demo 1986)
06. Signs Of Life (outtake 1986)
07. Untitled #1 (demo 1993)
08. Untitled #2 (demo 1993)
09. Untitled #3 (demo 1993)
10. Untitled #4 (demo 1993) (incl. What Do You Want From Me)
11. Untitled #1 (outtake 1993)
12. Wearing The Inside Out (outtake 1993)
The Instrumental Suite (outtake 1993):
13. - Cluster One
14. - Marooned
15. - Untitled (incl. High Hopes)

Details:

This is a revised version of the one I shared in the past on various Floyd sites.
Tracks are either upgrades compared to previous versions, or new tracks (tracks 2, 11, 13, 14 and 15).

Tracks 1, 3, 5 and 6 come from a tape that David Gilmour brought to BBC Radio One studios on 28Jul92, for his interview by Nick Horne (promoting the "Shine On" box set). They are from a pre-FM source and sound slightly better than the versions on the previous release, but are still mono. For that reason, the current compilation also includes the versions of "Like A Rolling Stone" (track 2) and "Learning To Fly" (track 4) taken from the stereo FM broadcast ("The Dogs Of War" and "Signs Of Life" were on the tape but were not broadcast during the BBC show).

The most significant upgrades are the 4 untitled demos from 1993 (tracks 7 to 10), for which I received unprocessed versions some months ago. The versions circulating until now had severe NR and were very muffled. The new versions offered here have some hiss, but sound natural and clear. The 1st demo was apparently assembled from two jams, and the first part was probably accelerated in order to have the same pitch as the second part. This demo was later developed and properly recorded by the band (the resulting studio outtake can be heard on track 11). The 4th demo is also an assemblage, from four separate jams (the third one containing the ascending chord sequence that appeared later on "What Do You Want From Me").

The outtake of "Wearing The Inside Out" (track 12) is from the same source as previously ("Bear In Tree" RoIO), with muffled sound as if the tape was played back with Dolby ON while the recording was not using Dolby. It was carefully remastered in order to bring some clarity and now sounds slightly better than the previous version.

The last 3 tracks are completely new, and form together an 11 minute instrumental suite. These outtakes probably come from an early version of "The Division Bell" album, and reveal that the first intention of the Floyd was to make a long instrumental piece where "Cluster One" segues into "Marooned", and then into a third part with percussions. This third part was abandoned for the final version of the album, but its harmonies were re-used in the bridge of "High Hopes". Please note that this instrumental suite was given to me with plenty of digi-noises, crackles and clicks, and was almost unlistenable in its rough form. I used de-clicking and de-crackling methods in order to make it listenable – and even enjoyable - but you can still hear some kind of "surface" noise or saturation during the loud parts. There is still hope to get a better (cleaner) version in the future. In the meantime, this is the best as it could sound.

21. A Thing Called Love > Goodnight From The Johnny Cash Show (6:19)

Total running time: 68 minutes and 58 seconds.

Tracks 1-2, and 7-16 taken from the 2002 broadcast from my own recording (see note below).
Tracks 3-6, and 17-21 taken from the 2006 broadcast as torrented on Dime early 2010 by demamey (#291635) (thanks!).

Track 16 is incomplete because it was at the end of the radio broadcast from 2002. About one minute into the song radio DJ Oscar Smit starts talking while the music continues. He talks for about 50 seconds, and then another 6 seconds of the music is heard just before the song and the radio show ends. I have cut out the talking, and with some mixing and (cross) fading created a (imho) better ending of the song. As between tracks 4 and 5 plus tracks 8 and 9, I have also done some crossfading between tracks 16 and 17 to have a contineous recording. I'm pretty satisfied with the result to be honest. You can decide for yourself of course. If someone's interested in my complete, untouched recording including the short pieces of DJ banter, to get the full scope of the original broadcast, let me know. These pieces are missing from the recording as torrented on Dime by Kanzan early 2010 (#291971) and recently reseeded by SpackTacular (#493736).

Tracks 1-2, and 7-16 taken from the 42nd Dutch VPRO "Nighttrain" 747 AM radio broadcast / FM cable radio broadcast, April 12, 2002.
Tracks 3-6, and 17-21 most probably taken from the Dutch KRO "Zomerfestival 2006" FM radio broadcast, August 22, 2006.

Source and lineage tracks 1-2, and 7-16 (taped and transferred by Magnix): FM cable > WAV > CDR > WAV > FLAC level 8.

bobsboots says:
A great package. The cover is an alternate photo from the Don Hunstien West 4th street photo shoot that produced the official LP cover. Inside is Dylan at CBS studio NY with famed producer John Hammond. The recordings are clear, crisp, and right off of the mix down board. This CD belongs in every collection. It was re-released in 1999 by an unknown Label, and again in 2001 by OMR.

Note that ~1'51" of Joni's intro to "Carey" in Track 07 was carefully edited out for the broadcast, for some reason.
The complete intro is included in what's called the Aircheck tape's Track 17. The missing bit begins at ~01'39" and ends at ~3'30".
Track 18 of the Aircheck tape is the same performance of "Carey" found in Track 07, but not the same track.

The sound isn't excellent. The left side tends to be slightly stronger than the right side of the mix. It is an audience recording. Everything can be heard well enough; however my personal feeling is the band didn't "gel" too well. As mentioned in the Sounds review (link above) there are some issues with the performance, but still great and interesting to listen to.

5. Comments from the production team
We have not heard this kind of the sound at the rock show for too many long years to recall the last time we got this feeling. Funny way to put it but this is the new wave of the classic rock.

Classic rock? but it sounds really YOUNG AND FRESH to my ears. Please check this band if you have a chance to see their live act. It surely deserves your attention.
