The pedigree of this 26 mintues of Pink Floyd footage found from this festival is a convoluted and cloudy proposition.  The most likely explanation for it's existence is as follows.  The festival saw several companies vying to be the on-site video production unit.  Paradise Films scored the official gig because they were able to provide the organizers with a large screen onto which images of the performances could be broadcast during the show.  In order to properly achieve this, a remote truck was parked close to the stage onto which a camerman was positioned, amonst other roaming cameras.

According to a source close to the producer, various formats were used to record the show including an on-stage stationary camera recording onto 2" tape, while other cameras used a 1" format.  The roaming cameras were of the Sony Portapac variety.

A live camera mix was projected onto the large screen.  It is generally believed that a master tape of this live does not exist.  The common belief amongst the people associated with this event is that any master tapes were wiped down or thrown away due to possible litigation should they have ever fallen into the public's hands.

The 1/2" reel tape that was used to create this DVD came from a screener that was given to Lindsey Clennel, representing Paradise Films.  It is believed that this 1/2" screener was created by simply setting up a camera in front of the large screen and recording the image off of it.  This method was used as a test to see if the footage was suitable for a release, but unfortunately all associated with the project agreed that it wasn't commercially viable material.

The original 1/2 reel that was used to make this DVD came from an annonymous collector who purchased it in the open market and subsequently, and graciously, returned it to their proper owners.

Shot on Sony Portapac 1/2" open reel format
Sound recorded via open microphone direct onto tape live synch.

The entire event was shot in this format by two camermen.  Only 38 minutes of the Pink Floyd set have surfaced, but other acts still remain in the archives on the original 1/2" reels.

The story of how thse reels surfaced after all these years is quite a revelation in itself, but the short version is that a U.S. collector, after years of regular communication with the owners, finally arranged a meeting which produced a batch of 1/2" reels.  These were sent to a post house in London for digital transfer which yielded some nice surpises, and it was agreed that more work would occur in the restoration of the several thousand hours of tape still in storage.

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
-Take 1, Take 2, Take 3, edit

These 16mm film reels were recently discovered and purchased by a Eurpean collector on the open market.  They were brought to a London post production facility for transfer onto DVD in the PAL format.  The version on this DVD was created from the PAL master DVD created from the 16mm transfer.  After viewing the edited footage from the broadcast, it is obvious that there are still several unedited takes that remain missing in action.

Recording Comments:
Overall the sound turned out quite nicely, but the entirety of it isn't without some issues. I flew into Pensacola, FL and drove from there to New Orleans, arriving the day of the concert. It rained in New Orleans for approximately 30 hours straight (off and on). So needless to say, many people were making a mass exodus from the park by the time I had arrived. The constant rain did end up causing some issues with how much of a "mud bath" it was and worrying about keeping my microphone dry. I moved a little bit throughout the first few songs and ended up in a nice spot and stayed there for the entire performance, which was about 50 feet back centerstage. The only huge issue is that the last track, "Paranoid", a drop of water or something must've gotten into my microphone and caused a deafening of one of the stereo channels. I did notice a small random amount of "blips" in the sound throughout, which I can only assume were thanks to the never-ending rain. Overall, given the circumstances, this recording is more than acceptable and a good listen. Concert pictures included with this recording were taken with two cameras, to include a Samsung Galaxy S5 at 16 Megapixels and the Intro Video is 1920x1080 HD resolution.

Recording "Proof" Comments:
On track 02, "I Don't Know" at 5:26-5:30, Ozzy Osbourne says, "Give it up for one of my best friends, a guy called Tom Morello". There are a couple of other mentions throughout the recording about the rain and other special guests.

Original Note from fixed version:
This differs slightly from the original seed of this gig. Some glitches were corrected, a TAO gap in the original source was removed, and the levels have been corrected as well (too low in the original seed). It's strongly suggested you download this even if you pulled the original down earlier.

Original seeder Notes:
Another glorious SBD recording of mid-80s New Order, this time from Barcelona, Spain. Lineage is the same stash-o-soundboards from (most likely) Hooky's Suite 16 recording studio, liberated by Brian Whittaker (Revenge touring bassist) via eBay, but previous to selling
copied amongst the NO trading community in the UK.

From a post by OldMonkey on STG:
"A box of mixing desk tapes was found in a rehearsal studio used by Peter Hook. They were advertised on E-bay by Brian Whittaker, former Revenge live guitarist. David Sultan of the website "World in Motion" paid over £500 to win the auction. Before they were sent to David though, they were copied amongst the Manchester bootlegging fraternity, and are now widely available in the UK and wider. Coincidentally (or otherwise, and this is where it gets good), the majority of the shows in this box were the complete gigs from the tracks used on the live disc of Retro (plus quite a few other gigs). It appears as though Hooky meant for them to find their way to the bootleg hardcore......."

Comments: An ALD recording from relatively early in the Police's 2007-2008 reunion tour was posted on DIME in early 2008; it was discovered that the ALD was out of phase -- I don't fully understand what that means, but essentially it means that one of the channels was somehow reversed, resulting in a sub-optimal sound. A corrected version was posted by "hildie" in March 2008 to address the issue. I admit that I don't fully understand the lineage, but this version sounded quite a bit better than the original and in fact, I think it's one of the better-sounding recordings from the Police's reunion tour.

In terms of performance, I have a hard time distinguishing one night from the other. This was a great nostalgia show, and the band was well-rehearsed and did a good job reproducing their hits from one night to the next with few deviations. I like the early part of the tour because the setlist was longer (roughly 120 minutes) than the end (about 105 minutes), by which time they'd cut some of the material that appears in this show.

Now that we're a few years removed from their reunion and the excitement has worn off, I don't think it's necessary to have more than a couple shows from this tour -- but I think this one should survive the cut. The sound, for an ALD recording, is very good.

Notes:
The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground & Nico were recorded in mid-April, 1966, during a four-day stint at Scepter Studios, a decrepit recording studio in New York City. This recording session was financed by Warhol and Columbia Records' sales executive Norman Dolph, who also acted as an engineer with John Licata. Though exact total cost of the project is unknown, estimates vary from $1500 to $3000

Actual recording at Scepter was done rather quickly in about two business days (roughly 8-10 hours) while the third was spent listening to the material and the fourth was spent mixing. Soon after, Dolph sent an acetate disc of the recordings to Columbia in an attempt to interest them in distributing the album, but they declined, as did Atlantic Records and Elektra Records. Eventually, the MGM Records-owned Verve Records accepted the recordings with the help of Verve staff producer Tom Wilson, who had recently moved from a job at Columbia.

Scepter Studios acetate version
Norman Dolph's original acetate pressing of the Scepter Studios material contains several recordings that would make it onto the final album, though many are different mixes of those recordings and three are different takes entirely.

The acetate was pressed on April 25, 1966, shortly after the recording sessions. It would resurface decades later when it was bought by collector Warren Hill of Montreal, Canada in September 2002 at a flea market in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City for $0.75. Hill put the album up for auction on eBay in November. On December 8, 2006, a winning bid for $155,401 was placed, but not honored. The album was again placed for auction on eBay and was successfully sold on December 16, 2006 for $25,200.

It is important to note that ten songs were recorded during the Scepter sessions and only nine appear on the acetate cut. Dolph recalls "There She Goes Again" being the missing song (and, indeed, the version of "There She Goes Again" that appears on the final LP is attributed to the Scepter Studios session).
Though rumors have circulated concerning an eventual official release of this version of the album, this has yet to be confirmed or announced by any major record label.
However, a ripped version of the acetate began circulating the internet in January 2007. Bootleg versions of the acetate tracks have also become available on vinyl and CD
