Jimi Hendrix - 1970-05-02 - Madison, WI (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

Jimi Hendrix
Dane County Coliseum
Madison, Wisconsin
May 2, 1970
[Funkydrummer Stereo Merge and Cleanup]

1st and 3rd source with some 2nd source to patch as necessary.

01 - Intro [1st and 2nd Source Merge]
02 - Fire [2nd Source and 3rd Source (halfway in)]
03 - Room Full Of Mirrors
04 - Hear My Train A Comin'
05 - Lover Man [1st and 2nd Source Merge]
06 - Red House
07 - Message To Love
08 - Ezy Rider
09 - Machine Gun
10 - Star Spangled Banner
11 - Foxy Lady
12 - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
13 - Purple Haze

Notes: The quality here is fantastic for a 1970 audience recording. Two decent sources of this show circulated for decades, each complementing each other. A few years back a third source popped up that is brilliant quality for the time. It caputures all the instruments clearly, including Cox's heavy bass. It's loud and upfront, and while a bit unbalanced at times, it's vibrant and gives you an idea of Hendrix's live sound in 1970 if you were out in the audience.

Funkydrummer on CTT took all three sources and worked his magic. Just before Hendrix's first solo during "Fire" the high quality sound kicks in and stays for most of the gig, sans "Lover Man," which the third source did not capture.

Brilliant show from Mr. Hendrix on this night. His spirits are good, really connecting with the audience and his playing is phenomenal. Some funny moments...the fan freaking out as "Fire" starts "Oh wow!!!" ... after "Hear My Train" someone yells "what can we give you?" Hendrix slyly replies "a joint" and a few seconds later several fly on to the stage. After "Red House," as Hendrix tunes up, he makes a golf(!) reference. "You have a 3-inch putt and you miss it" referencing the effort to tune up and make it just right, only to have things go awry. He also references Cambodia before "Machine Gun" where he U.S. suddenly had military operations at the time of this gig.

Some slight oddities on this night...while Hendrix never had a standard setlist, going from the Stars Spangled Banner into Foxy Lady was a rarity...as was Voodoo Child into Purple Haze, the latter's intro notes played in staccato fashion instead of more of the gliding start generally heard on live 1970 versions.

Anyway, thanks to Funkydrummer and his approval to seed this show over here on DIME. Enjoy Jimi and co. as they were on this night in 1970, captured by fans like us...good work lads!!!

Comments:
Here is our capture of Joe Walsh from the "One Hellava Night" Tour with Bad Co., and an acoustic guitar-singer (Steve Rogers, without his band), both opening for Joe. We were in the 2nd row of sec. 236 (dead center to the stage). The sound mix was very good, the LA area crowd was pretty well behaved and the recording came out well. Joe appeared to enjoy himself this cool and breezy full-moon friday evening. Note, Ringo sat in on Drums for the first encore, RMW!

Austin City Limits welcomed back a music giant: singer and songwriter Robert Plant, returning to their stage for the first time in more than a decade. Plant travelled to ACL as part of his "Southern Journey," visiting the "places that gave birth to so much of the music I love," with a select run of live dates dubbed the "Blues...Roots and Hollers" tour. The music icon celebrated the American South as a continuation of the eclectic soulful journey he began since leaving Led Zeppelin decades ago. He has spent many years exploring Americana music and America itself, traveling though the U.S. and collaborating with roots musicians, including Alison Krauss for 2009's six-time Grammy-winning album 'Raising Sand'. Plant's acclaimed 10th solo album, 2014's 'Lullaby and...The Ceaseless Roar', combines his love of everything from American country blues and rockabilly to British folk, Moroccan trance music and West African griot into a vision all his own. Joined by his diverse, versatile six-piece band the Sensational Space Shifters for this appearance, Plant adds, "Having just begun work on our new album, we thought we'd take time out to raise a little sand and welcome springtime with one more adventure, another celebration of life and song."

Roger Hodgson - 2012-07-18 - Lucca, IT (FM/FLAC)

(FM broadcast FLAC)

Lucca Summer Festival
Piazza Napoleone
Lucca, Italy
18 July 2012
Originally broadcast on Radio2 RAI
FM remaster

Lineage (FM > HD > web)
ITT HiFi4060 Tuner > Audacity 2.0 via C-Media CMI8738/C3DX soundcard > 44100hz/16bit flac's (level 8) > webtorrenting

Then, the additional lineage:

TLH > Guitar Tracks Pro 3.0 > SB X-FI Platinum > Sony Sound Forge 8.0 > Magix Audio Cleaning Lab > TLH > FLAC

The remaster:
About 19 minutes of DJ banter ( yes, some music too, because the DJ talks over it), intros and other talking was removed from the original recording. 2 or 3 very brief sections of DJ banter remain.
25 seconds of clean, uninterupted applause was taken from 2 other sources, overdubbed and carefully added to the original with cross fading ( slow in/slow out ). Using Sony Sound Forge 8.0, I blended the channels slighty and raised the volume a little.I noticed some brief dropouts on the original, some were lost in editing but I made no effort to fix the others. I resisted changing the pitch of the recording, even though I think Roger's voice sounds a bit "off ", it must have been the water in Lucca, but my knob twirling, while creating very interesting versions of this concert, yielded no fulfilling results, other than making Roger sound even more feminine and "mousy". Maybe next time I should turn the knobs the other way....
This ( hopefully ) creates a more comfortable recording to listen to, rather than have the intrusion of the DJ ( a woman who clearly enjoys the sound of her own voice, even more than Roger ! ). The clean applause was taken from concerts on the NAB / NAV lists, but as far as I know, only the artist performances themselves are banned. Besides this controversy, I freely choose to be the only one harmed by the secret of knowing which shows they are. I can only say this; one of the recordings is from my own master ( CA-11 cards > DR-2d ), the clapping is mostly the sound made by my own hands, the same hands which are giving you 19 minutes of your life every time you hear the remaster.......
Later, after completing a Pink Floyd SBD/AUD Quad Surround Sound "matrix" from 1977, I will share a seperate recording containing the 19 minutes extant, a glorious example of overindulgence which I will dedicate to RAI DJ's & executives, liars and bullshit artists worldwide !!

* the actual setlist had Exit Music in this position, but I think Thom was so upbeat and the first encore had SS and HTDC, so they went with energy instead. And it was great! Note that Encore break 2 is longer than usual because of the change in setlist.

Night 2 in Amsterdam!!!
OH MY GOD - I was not there I just watched and listened from across the Atlantic ;-) - but this was just a MONSTER SHOW, compared with somewhat more reserved and careful trying things out yesterday. Thom seemed in a great mood and full of energy, sounding fantastic, and the band was tight! Also, the sound of the tape and, as confirmed by many people who were there, in the venue itself was better than yesterday. And just look at this setlist! I hope those of you who were not thrilled with their selection yesterday are more enthusiastic now ;) This was yet again lovingly recorded by bnz and huge thanks go to him; BLG yet again mastered the tape in record-breaking speeds, and I tracked it. Party on!!

We wanted to get it out to everyone as quickly as we could ;) Which means bnz did this fantastic job taping (and deserves most of the credit!), and then the files have travelled to California and BLG did his usual magic mastering, back to the US east coast to me for tracking - and here we are :)
