(DVDfull pro-shot)

Tangerine Dream - Live from the Berlin Wall, East Berlin Palast der Republik, GDR 1980-01-31 First Time Ever 5.1 Surround-Sound Matrix NTSC DVD with added visualizations - A Doinker/MOB/TheTooleMan Consipiracy - Awe-inspiring - Don't blame us if you see God or Allah while watching it!

It's all true, too... this DVD has the quality of something you'd go out and buy. It's also optimized 16:9 for wide-screen televisions.

Before we get started - this is the as-yet unreleased portion of this evening. For the rest of the show, try the commercial release "Pergammon". Please support Tangerine Dream!

For years it has been known that there have been two versions of this show: a 1:1 transfer from the now-lost soundboard tape, and the FM broadcast. The soundboard version has been available through the Tangerine Tree for years, but the FM cast is much more widely known from the great German vinyl bootleg 'Staatsgrenze West'.

I have three copies of the vinyl, including the ultra-rare numbered first edition on red vinyl. There was a funny thing about it - the soloing instruments were very loud, especially during the great jam opening the second side, but nothing else was audible. I only received the soundboard version a couple of years ago, only to get my hopes dashed for a better mix. Oh, there are other instruments in there all right, but the soloing instruments exist only as faded echoes and the TT version runs too fast. The sound quality of both sources was very close. Quizically, both versions are in fully-separated stereo, meaning that the original setup must have been quadraphonic.

Hence an idea was born: to combine the two versions and to make a 5.1 surround-sound mix. To make this happen, I sent fresh transfers from the red-vinyl edition of 'Staatsgrenze West' to audio restoration whiz MOB, where he speed-corrected the TT source and was able to totally synchronize the sound with the vinyl version. The restored four-channel was then passed to TheTooleMan for 5.1 audio DVDr authoring.

To my total surprise, TheTooleMan figured out a way to add visuals to the audio that synch with the music. Some of them are WMP-like, many of them are not. It's simply a mind-blowing experience to watch. I've attached a contact sheet in the comments section, please check it out.

Even if you don't like or have never heard of Tangerine Dream, this show is a great place to start.
