Note by the taper (happytrader):
I had this concert on cassette 20 years ago but unfortunately that tape was lost in the midst of time so didn't have it until very recently when this version was received in a trade. It sounds slightly cleaned up from memory of the tape I had but is still pretty lo-fi. I'm not sure whether it has been on Dime on before. It isn't great quality but a historically important show and well worth it for MC5 aficionados. To my knowledge it is one recording out of only two in existence of the band playing in 1971. That of course precludes the instance that someone might be sitting on some recordings that have never entered trading circles i.e. like the Stooges 1971 recordings recently released on Easy Action. There is a kind of a sad feel or atmosphere hanging over this concert - especially in 'Looking at you' which is an extended atmospheric jazz tinged version. Its as though the music is reflecting a great band coming to the end of its life.

Notes by the uploader:
A bit of a story to the coming of these tapes (I also taped the Computer World show), when these shows were first announced I was very excited and was hoping to get tickets. I was in class the time these went on sale and had for different internet browsers up with 2-3 tabs each to get ANYTHING. Sadly, I got nothing for any date. I was pretty bummed, so I started posts on Craigslist to get a ticket to any of the shows. I was also willing to pay a bigger amount just because "Man Machine" and "Computer World" were my two favorite albums, and could only go to the weekend shows due to final exams and I worked on Sunday.

Finally, a two weeks before the show, someone said they had an extra and I booked my plane ticket and headed to NYC!!! I was so excited and fortunate to have the opportunity to see this show. The venue, was The Museum of Modern Art in the 2nd floor atrium. I went there earlier in the day to check out the museum and look around. Amazing stuff, but I was wondering about the tall ceilings and how the sound would be. Lets just say, it was the best sound I have ever heard… ever.. for a concert. Simply amazing.

The 3D was spectacular with Kraftwerk's simple visuals. Was so pumped to hear "Spacelab" live after watching the Munich YouTube video hundreds of times since October. A young Ralf Hutter singing "Radioactivity" for the visuals at the beginning of that song gave me chills. This night was super special to me. Something I will never forget in my life. The stage itself was small and the left stack had a column right to the left of it. They put some sound foam on it, and I thought that it would be the best to record right in front of it because it would bounce off it nicely, and it sure did! A bit in the middle there were some people (who obviously were not big fans of Kraftwerk and just wanted to be there for its "exclusivity") decided to have a faint conversation for a good 10 minutes or so, before going to get another drink. People I talked to said that this was the most energetic night in terms of audience. Most of the other nights were very quiet, clapping and woo'ing at the end of songs. I am very happy with the outcome of this tape and have to say it's one of my better ones.

JEMS is pleased to release another lost and found recording, this of a previously uncirculated show at the Geneva Theatre in Geneva, NY, December 7, 1974, Bruce and the band’s second to last gig of the year. According to the indispensible Brucebase, the concert was booked by the local Hobart & William Smith College and featured Jae Mason as the opening act.

Geneva turns out to be an unusually solid tape for the era, recorded with two mics in stereo and remarkably free of material cuts. The crowd around the mics, presumably the taper and his friends, are going crazy but it only as to the atmosphere on this highly listenable document of a fantastic period in Springsteen’s concert history that featured Suki Lahav on cello.

While the show is largely standard for the era, that sells short a set list that includes a stunning “Incident” to open, the striking cover of Dylan’s “I Want You,” and an epic three-song stretch that moves from the as-yet-unreleased “Jungleland” to “Kitty’s Back” to what just might be the longest ever performance of “New York City Serenade,” clocking in north of 24 minutes of majesty.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, due to Bruce breaking a guitar string, we’re treated a rare lead vocal from the Big Man, Clarance Clemons, on the time-filling vamp, “Gimme That Wine.” The show wraps with a rousing “A Love So Fine” into a storming “Wear My Ring” and last but not least, “the greatest dance record ever recorded,” “Quarter to Three.”

The tape itself is one of half a dozen reel-to-reels loaned to JEMS from ML, which were all low-gen copies of known recordings with this one major exception. A big thank you to him for shipping out the reels and letting us release the show. Thanks as well to AM and PR, whose enthusiasm for Geneva got me even more excited about it. Tapeboy handled the pitch adjustments, which are much appreciated. And last but not least, thanks to mjk5510 for catching the files as always when they come off the post-production line.

Sets: 45min+
Media: CDR
Number: 1
Source: cassette master > wav > flac
Quality: A

Side 1: (Live) The entire first performance of Faith. No More., recorded on Oct.11 at SF's On Broadway.
Band members consisted of Faith. No More. along with appreciated assistance from Joe Pie (vocals) and Jake Smith (guitar).
Sound was engineered by Matt Wallace.

Thanks to all who attended the show and enabled its success, and to those who hope to see the next one.

There is nothing very odd about disliking birds of prey, but this is no reason for holding it against large birds of prey that they carry off lambs. And when the lambs whisper amoung themselves,'These birds of prey are evil, and does this not give us a right to say that whatever is the opposite of the bird of prey must be good?' there is nothing intrinsically wrong with this argument, although the birds of prey will look somewhat quizzically and say,"We have nothing against these good lambs; in fact, we love them; nothing tastes better than tender lamb.'"

"projected" line-up:

Joe Pop-O-Pie (vocals)
Jake Smith (guitar)
Bill Gould (bass)
Mike Bordin (drums)
Roddy Bottum (keyboards)

04 Spirit > The Words of Jamal

Side 2: "New Love, Same Neuroses; New Hairstyles, Same Minds."

Transferred from the original cassette by ingnseps.
Remastered by S.T.O.H.

32 years ago this week, Faith No More played their first show under that name.
The first and to this day, ONLY documented copy of this scarce cassette was shared on youtube in 2009 by ingnseps.
Before he auctioned the tape off on ebay (for what in hindsight must've been a somewhat disappointing $102), ingnseps was kind enough to share his lossless transfer with me.
S.T.O.H. performed his usual wizardry on it, resulting in a 5min increase in total time after speed-correction.

What we have here is the bands' first performance from On Broadway, San Francisco 1983-10-11 from the cassette A side and the bands' first demos recorded as Faith No More from the B side. The first ever lossless distribution of these essential recordings.

Foreword :
Here comes a new version of the Torino multicam. I received 2 new complete and great full HD recording of the show (well actually not totally for one of them as i used it for 5 songs on the previous mix). The result is an enhance (i hope ) mix, which allowed me to remove all the youtube sources used before.
