The beginning of a new series from the JEMS archives. Up to now we've been putting up masters, but I've pulled out some first generation tapes and started transferring them. These aren't 'low-gen' or 'I-don't-know' gen tapes, these are legitimate 1st gen tapes, meaning my copy came right from the master. I got this from the guy that taped the show. It was a cassette master and this copy is probably as good as were going to get on this one which is a pretty good quality for this era of recording.

The group's most exotic gig in 1971 was a one-shot in France.

"We went over there to do a big festival, a free festival they were gonna have, but the festival was rained out. It flooded. We stayed at this little chateau which is owned by a film score composer who has a 16-track recording studio built into the chateau, and this is a chateau that Chopin once lived in; really old, just delightful, out in the country near the town of Auvers sure Oise, which is where Vincent Van Gogh is buried. …" Garcia said.

"We were there with nothing to do: France, a 16-track recording studio upstairs, all our gear, ready to play, and nothing to do. So, we decided to play at the chateau itself, out in the back, in the grass, with a swimming pool, just play into the hills. We didn't even play to hippies, we played to a handful of townspeople in Auvers. We played and the people came — the chief of police, the fire department, just everybody. It was an event and everybody just had a hell of a time — got drunk, fell in the pool. It was great."

Some of the Grateful Dead show at Hérouville were broadcast in France by the "The Second Channel" of the ORTF (French Radio and Television Broadcasting) on the July 24, 1971 edition of the rock program "Pop 2"
A second part of the show has been broadcast in Black & White ( don't know why !) on the November 27, 1971.

The interview conducted with Jerry is really interesting but overdubbed in French.
That overlay doesn't allow English speakers to truly hear all that's being said. Of course, if you speak fluent French then you might be able to understand all that Jerry is talking about and all that the translator dude says afterwards.

Audio\Video Faults:
I'm not going to begin to document the massive number of cuts that I found in this amazing video - the POP 2 editors did a fairly good job in most places where the cuts were almost seamless but when compared to the Miller soundboard, large chunks of every song were missing. Morning Dew and Black Peter were left incomplete, however missing footage between existing clips were filled in to allow for the music to flow and short lead-in or lead-out footage was added. The rest of the songs are now complete. I spent almost 40 hours matching the existing video and filler with the intent of making it as close to possible - this was after the time I spent syncing the existing video to the Miller soundboard. I enjoyed and appreciate the original footage supplied by hbtoulouse and have made these modifications with his blessing. I also put the songs in the correct order and moved the Jerry interviews to a seperate section. I only hope you enjoy this as much as I do as it doesn't really get much better than this.

Forty years after the band’s legendary performance, one of the most iconic Led Zeppelin bootlegs of all time, Listen To This Eddie, gets a companion with the first-ever release of GaryB’s mono master tapes from The Forum, June 21, 1977. This newly uncovered second recording of the show complements the work of legendary taper Mike Millard (whose tape is the source of the LTTE bootleg) to provide an alternative perspective and a fresh, compelling way to listen anew to this fantastic and familiar show.

For decades, Millard’s recording stood as the only document of the show to surface, though GaryB and friends have been listening to his recording since the day after, especially his buddy Erik who, having taken some “mood enhancers” prior to the show, woke up the next day with almost no memory of what took place. Because Erik couldn’t remember much, GaryB titled his tape Listen To This Erik.

GaryB’s title implies that he was familiar with the famous Eddie bootleg, and indeed he was. In fact, it was because of Millard’s tape/the Eddie bootleg that GaryB never felt there would be any desire for his recording, since he deemed the quality of Eddie to be superior to Erik. For that reason, his tape of the show went unheard by Zeppelin collectors at large until a couple months ago when, to recognize the show’s 40th anniversary, GaryB posted an incomplete and cobbled together MP3 of his tape to YouTube. The response from Zeppelin fans was immediate: WHERE DID THIS COME FROM and HOW CAN WE GET THIS?

What Zep fans were responding to both in YouTube comments and on message boards was atmosphere. As great as Millard’s Led Zeppelin recordings are, one thing they don’t unmistakably capture is the electric atmosphere of the crowd, something those who were there remember so clearly. “From 8:15 to 9:45 pm,” GaryB recalls, “every time a song on the pre-show tape began to fade, the crowd started cheering. By the time they came on, insanity.”

He continues: “The electricity of the crowd always stood out to me. Springsteen once said that the very word ‘concert’ means BOTH the audience and artist are engaged. On this night, both Zeppelin and the crowd brought their A game and the result was an epic show. I thought the band just fed off the crowd and kicked it up to a rarely seen level. Listen to the audience when Page is introduced: the ovation was crazy. I tell my wife and kids that when I’m old and I can’t remember anything, just put on my concert recording of 6/21/77 and I’ll have a huge smile on my face.”

GaryB’s tape captures that atmosphere brilliantly from the get-go, as we get over 90 seconds of ecstatic audience build up before Jimmy hits that preamble chord then launches into “The Song Remains the Same.” There’s plenty of appealing audience response throughout, and while the quality of GaryB’s recording is not quite at Millard’s level, it is still better than many ’77 audies, sounding especially clear in quieter songs and holding up respectfully when the band is at full power. It was made on a borrowed recorder that we haven’t been able to fully identify, but GaryB says was a substantial piece of gear, with solid metal parts and a brown leather case. He knew he was in for a long show, so he snuck in two Memorex 120-minute tapes, which he says he copied off many years ago and avoided playing to help preserve them.

During the show, GaryB and his brother Dave took turns holding the recorder, which had to be held up relatively high all night because the microphone was built in. Gary adds, “Like me, Dave also had to keep quiet the whole show because we were taping. Very hard not to react on a night like that!”

The YouTube and message board posts prompted Gary to seek someone who could properly transfer the masters and JEMS was lucky enough to be recommended for the gig by our dear friend BW with whom I had the following email exchange:

Wow, what took you so long to respond? :)

Gary shipped the tapes to JEMS South and the work began. Those who have experience with 40-year-old, 120-minute cassette tapes know they are temperamental to say the least. GaryB had re-shelled one of the tapes (i.e. moved the actual interior tape and reels from the original cassette shell into a newer one) at some point in the past and that needed to be done again, as the pressure pad was gone on tape two and it wasn’t running smoothly. The new shell helped, but it still took multiple passes and a lot of hand-winding to capture the entirety of both sides. Tape one, while fussy in its own ways, played through relatively well given its age, the condition of its original shell and pad still viable. With great relief, I informed GaryB that the transfer was successful.

But there was still plenty to do. We have taken the rare step of noting this recording as “restored.” This is due to the work undertaken to repair several dozen short audio dropouts (likely due to movement of the tape deck during the show) inherent in the master. Using the latest iZotope RX software, we were able to fix the dropouts in a manner that should be relatively transparent to many listeners in most instances and substantially lessens the auditory defect. The manner of recording also required re-sequencing of parts and multiple pitch adjustments have been made to fix speed issues throughout, though most pronounced in the show’s final 30 minutes (“Achilles” to the end) when batteries were beginning to fail, slowing the recording, which then sounds sped up on normal playback. The fixes aren’t perfect by any means, as the speed change grows highly variable, but they are a marked improvement to the original.

We are presenting the final product in two forms. For the 16/44.1 edition, we have mastered GaryB’s restored recording to offer what in our opinion is a high-quality listening experience. For the purists out there (and surely to the delight of many Japanese bootleg labels: Maido arigatou gozaimasu!), we present a high-resolution, 24/96 restored but unmastered edition.

Speaking of Japanese bootlegs, there is a title which patches the missing portion of “Ten Years Gone” on Millard’s recording with a second source, but no other audio of the second source was released. We don’t believe GaryB’s tape was the mystery source, but we hope a knowledgeable collector will let everyone know.

This project was a labor of love for me and everyone involved. First and foremost, GaryB has been an absolute pleasure to work with and get to know. It is through his generosity that we get to hear a different version of one of our favorite Zeppelin shows of all time. Thanks for trusting JEMS, Gary. We hope you like the result. unicrayon wrote in 2006, "This is an uncirculated [in 2006] version, I think there are others in circulation. An edited version has been played on FM radio (without the songs that were not yet released at the time), and the master may have been stolen at the radio station. I don't know about the other versions, but this one is very good! Some work has been done on the first track's level. The original recording started out much too loud, then went to low, so I worked on the gain to make it sound right (there's still a little distortion in the beginning, but I think it is unavoidable). Tracks 18 & 25* are two pretty long sections of enthusiastic crowd noise. I left them so you get the whole concert exactly as it has been recorded. For your listening pleasure, you may want to burn a CD without these two tracks. Tracks 11 & 12** (fade-out & fade-in) were added to make a more pleasurable listening experience at the end of the first CD and at the start of the second one. When listening on a computer or any media that can accommodate more than 75 minutes of music, you can simply leave these two tracks out, so you get the whole concert in one go."

Going through some old cd's and tape transfers - I received these files in Wave format - There are 2 full versions that also circulate titled Sinners Dance and Full Moon that were also released which I do not have. If anyone would be nice to share this it would be nice!!! The disc is silver in color with "Sinners Swing" in black lettering arching the top of the disc and "KTS 706 AS The Ultimate In Quality" along the bottom. It's an audience recording. "audience Ex-" but could have been a very solid EX if it were run through an EQ. The sound is somewhat distant as a whole and no one instrument "overpowers" another. This is missing solo's for Alex and Mike. "Ice Cream Man", "Unchained", and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love". These last two tracks were supposed to be included in this release as evidenced by this cover art, which was never used.

"A few days off in Florida allow the band to continue to recover after the debacle in Los Angeles.  Snippets of Singing in the Rain are included in Two Hearts Beat as One. I Fall Down is interrupted because of heavy pushing in the front.  'You see the white flags that we have at the back of the stage?  That means nobody gets hurt when we play.'  It's a hot night in Florida and the airconditioning isn't at its best.  'Have you any air to breathe down there?' Bono asks during the encore.  "Well, if you have, just breathe it this way, OK?"

This concert starts off with what was presumably a local DJ hyping up the crowd with his introduction...the quality is pretty good, maybe 4 to 4.5/5, so wonder if this was a radio broadcast someone taped, or just a pretty nice audience recording.  Justin mentions a conversion performed by Dana Fletcher from cassette, so maybe he knows more about this...Justin describes his version as "...almost sounds like there was a blanket over the taper's microphones.  Audience noise is virtually non-existent" -- The versions on achtungbootlegs.com and at Justin's site have this one one cd, with Cat Dubh and Into the Heart as a single track...my version, and the one for which Lars made cover art (available at the archives) has this as a two disc version, 9/8 track split, and Cat Dubh/Into the Heart separated.  Although one could potentially combine these and overburn into an 80 minute disc, I decided it would be easier for most to just post this as a two cd set.

There is a two second glitch at 2:56 of Electric Co.

Notes: 

This is a nice novelty show for any Bruce fan...very short but complete. The gig took place at a small nightclub in downtown Lancaster called The Village, which still stands and operates today. Bruce and the band had been gearing up for what would become the monstrous 'Born In The USA' tour. While there was no formal announcement of this gig, word spread that Bruce was showing up for a brief "practice" show at The Village...and he did not let the 500 or so locals down. The show is indeed short (33 minutes) but it is complete and packs a nice punch. The mix is a bit odd but the recording is pretty clean with some minor tape fluctuations here and there. The real oddity here is that Max Weinberg is playing a drum machine(!!!) and the synth (Danny F?) is quite loud in spots, which gives this show a cheesy sound at times. While this critique might sound like I'm trying to deter you from downloading this, I'm simply giving my humble opinion of what to expect...it's still a great nugget from mid-80's Bruce.

Some volume fluctuations in "Dazzle" - I suppose the taper needed to adjust volume as soon as the song explodes. Otherwise great sound. Great performance - highlights are "We Hunger" (flawless deep voice), "Desert Kisses", "Into The Light", "Red Light", "Christine", "Monitor" - don't think I've ever heard better versions of these songs. The live version of "Desert Kisses" sounds like the demo version included on the Kaleidoscope remaster (though played live obviously) and "Into The Light", stripped of its backing vocal, sounds like the Peel Sessions version.

All of the recordings used in the process were taped from the live FM radio broadcast to audio cassettes, which means you will notice various signal problems and a lot of tape hiss. A LOT OF TAPE HISS :-) The amount of the hiss was so annoyingly high that I simply HAD to try to minimize it. Unfortunately it's impossible to remove ONLY hiss, so you will notice that some parts of some songs have a "thin" sound. Other songs will still have a lot of hiss, simply because when I tried to remove it, it damaged the sound too much, and the hissy version was actually the more enjoyable one.

This is a bootleg CD from an open-air festival Marillion played in 1986. The headline act of this festival was Queen (who were later joined by Fish on stage), and this is a nice "Welcome To The Garden Party" set. This show was broadcast on German radio station SWF3, and this bootleg was sourced from there. There is some slight static at some point, but this was due to thunderstorms in some areas (I remember listening to this show at the radio, and in our region, the broadcast even broke down for some minutes), otherwise the sound quality is perfect.

All sources were speed corrected and EQ-processed to match each other as much as possible. Noise reduction was applied for Source 2 to reduce the hiss of tape throughout the whole recording. 
Some volume fluctuations of Source 1 were fixed in several songs. Also various small and large crackles were fixed in this one. 

First half of 'One Vision' intro tape was restored from another famous show recording.

Comment:
This is the 7th concert of the sold out 1986 European "Magic Tour" and the best bootleg recording from this tour. This tour is one of the best documented Queen tours, at least one (in-)complete recording exists from every show they played on this tour with one exception (Zürich July 1st 1986). Ten of the shows were indoor, the remaining shows were big stadium shows leading the tour to it's great final at Knebworth Park which was attended by 120000 - 200000 people. A lot of stuff of this tour has been released officially such as Wembley (both nights), Budapest and Knebworth (Live Magic compilation - a complete official Knebworth release does not exist).

A truly superb upgrade of the Mannheim soundboard recording. Although it has better soundquality than the 'Reigns The World' bootleg, this one has a bit more tape hiss than the previous release. Having said that, this set is still far superior to the others as it not only contains the full show, it is also without any fade in/outs which were so often present on previous releases. This is the definitive version of the show, and it cannot and will not get any better than this. Note that the previous bootleg release with the same title (on Leopard label) has worse quality than this Gypsy Eye re-release.

The lead singer of the band Marillion, Fish, joins the band to sing backing vocals on Tutti Frutti.
