notes:
Here is one of the finest sounding audience recordings of Pink Floyd ever made, although the performance is rather average, arguably. Recorded by the late Mike Millard, most likely on a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck with two high-quality AKG mics. I assume this is probably sourced from a 1st gen or very very low gen source, as it is supposed to be the case that no digital transfer of Mike's masters are known to exist, as far as this recording goes, not sure about other recordings he may have done for other bands.
As many of you probably know, Millard liked to "mark" a lot of his tapes, to track who might have traded certain tapes to whomever. Also, presumably in an effort to see who might have given his recordings to bootleg labels. I am unsure if this bootleg is another marked copy that I haven't come across previously or if Sigma kind of botched this one. I won't get into all the different markings that may exist because I honestly don't know all of them but I will note a few things about this one.
- This has the "Mike Test" at the beginning of the recording, like NK's 1st gen>DAT and a supposed 1st gen>Hi-Fi that I have, which are basically identical to each other, so I doubt that's it's Hi-Fi lineage is correct. Some versions out there do not have this into.
- The 1st tape flip that occurs during HAC at 02:10 into the song has been "fixed" so continuity is not broken, probably patched with another part of the song. This is very well done. All of the Millard sources miss the verse "We're just knocked out, we heard about the sell out, you gotta get an album out, you owe it to the people, we're so happy we can hardly count" as it occurs during the tape flip.
- However, after the flip, on this source, this tape seems to entirely miss the line "...it's a helluva start" and sloppily goes right into "...made into a monster". It's jarring and sounds terrible and does not happen on any other source I've come across. Not sure if this is a marking or some sort of screw up on the part of Sigma. Not sure how they missed this one or what they did that eliminated that line. When they patched the tape flip how did they not notice this part? I have included a short audio sample of the original so you can hear what I'm talking about before I fixed it.
- The 2nd tape flip occurs at 05:00 into ACYL. Nothing was done to really fix this section like the flip in HAC but they did manage to blend the transition between the flip nicely.
- At the very end of the tape, after Echoes and right after Dave's farewell, there is a quick fade out and then it comes back for the remainder of the applause. I have not seen this on any of the other versions I have. I've included an audio sample of this portion and a screenshot so you can see what I mean before I fixed it. Right around the 22:21 mark I patched in a short segment from NK's 1st gen>DAT to eliminate the short fade and continue the applause unbroken without missing anything.
- I included a short audio sample of the Reeling source at the very end of the tape and a screenshot of what appears to be a marking. You can clearly see a small patch during the applause followed by a female voice saying "thank you very much". To me this is clearly not part of the original recording. It is also worth noting the Reeling source does not have the "Mike Test" either.
So, I used NK's 1st gen>DAT for both patches. I tried to EQ match and level adjust the patches best I could to make it sound seamless and natural to the Sigma remastering. Sounds prettygood to me and basically salvaged this release IMO. There is also a bunch of tics that seem inherent to most versions of this show that I have, mostly in the left channel and during quiter parts. I went through and removed as many as I could find. If you find any leftover it is purely your imagination
This recording has been released many many times by fans and bootleg labels. So, here's another one for you to add to your collection if you're so inclined. I like the job Sigma did here because it sounds quite natural to me and this is my preferred remaster to listen to, so it was worth it to me to fix these problem areas. Hope you like it.
While trolling youtube I came across a cool video about Mike Millard and his recording practices, some of you may find this pretty interesting...
