Well, here it is. One of the earliest bootleg releases of this Winterland audience tape. Zeppelin is incredibly powerful. Almost frightening. Jimmy Page's guitar screams and Robert Plant's vocals screams louder. These early days in Zeppelin's career are difficult to beat. Four years later, they play Kezar Stadium in San Francisco & sound like an entirely different band.
The April 1969 San Francisco stint could be considered their early triumph. This performance at the Winterland is often overshadowed as it's sandwiched between two dates in which superior recordings exist (esp. the oft-bootlegged excellent FM b'cast AKA 'soundboard' recording of the 27th at the Fillmore). But, it's this rather neglected Winterland recording that has the special treat: the encore and probably earliest live performance of 'Whole Lotta Love' to appear on tape. Zeppelin's official website claims this is, indeed, the first live performance: http://www.ledzeppelin.com/show/april-26-1969
Robert Plant jokes about the use of the newly acquired tambourine needed to perform the song. I believe the song, being so new, was not performed the next night at the Fillmore because the band, aware that the show was to be recorded for
radio broadcast, felt the song was not ready for prime time at the moment. Or, the band didn't want an FM radio quality version of their upcoming single to be available. Either way, this Winterland recording provides a rare glimpse at a rock and roll classic in it's embryonic stage.
razy is the fact that this Black Swan bootleg release neglects to mention the song, at all. It's the highlight of the recording, and doesn't get listed on the back cover. Not that you can tell, as they chose sepia-toned artwork with brown text, making the setlist all but unreadable. Superb front cover photo, though, so I can forgive them.
