These are three different sources from the same sessions which gave birth to A Trick Of The Tail, the first Genesis album without Peter gabriel to feature Phil Collins on vocals. Sources are different and I took the opportunity of a recent transfer of my own copy of A Trick Of The Tail "Outtakes" vinyl boot to create a mega-seed that include all three.

A Trick of the Outtakes comes from a Highland CD and it is probably the most complete and best sounding. Quality there is pristine and this should be kept as the reference for these outtakes. Top notch there.

The second source comes from a tape trade I did back in the mid 80´s and I haven´t seen this source circulating. tracks are the same except that this source is very hissy but you can hear some small sections not available on the cd, like small comments in the studio and counting before the track starts. I guess this is really for completists but could be interesting.

The third source is from a vinyl boot I purchased back in 1987. Quality is also very good but shorter. Overall, this is basically what you need to have in terms of ATOTT outtakes.

Comments
Gary Marx distributed in 1981 a very small quantity of tapes including some studios and live materials to promote the band . here is one of this tapes. The quality is very good for the early sisters years I've never heard those 1981's gigs with this sound quality and normal speed. Here is the story regarding this tape to attest authenticity and source. This tape come from a huge set bought from a close source from Gary Marx. This set including this tape + 1 WEA box + 1 test pressing of Reptile House. Also the Reptile House EP came in a mail carrier with adress of Mark Pearman (aka Gary Marx).

When this came out, in 1989, it was a pretty awesome collection of Lennon rarities in nice quality.
However, now it is a hodgepodge, and you can find all this stuff on discs that actually go by date and
don't just mix up stuff.

SOUNDS GREAT

Yes, it may be a hodgepodge now, but a good place for the beginner of John boots to start. A nice little mix of everything. The version of I Found Out kicks ass!!! If you find it at a good price (or a trade) pick it up.

Bruce Springsteen - The Ties That Bind (STU/FLAC)

(Studio FLAC)

"The Ties That Bind"
Bruce Springsteen
Red Robin Records
ROB-1022
Released in Europe in 1994

Source: Original silvers

Somehow, all versions of Bruce's lost album from late 1979 have fallen off of the tracker. It came very close to being released before he pulled out at the last minute. The source for all of the releases of this album including this one before the excellent JEMS version was from the master tapes but not a 'perfect' transfer until JEMS re-transfered it. Anyways, the album would have appeared exactly like this, with tracks 1-5 making up side 1 and 6-10 making up side 2. It is a shame that Bruce threw three of these fantastic songs away and then re-recorded or chose another mix for others for the River album.

01 - The Ties That Bind - Take 8
02 - Cindy - Take 3
03 - Hungry Heart - Take 2
04 - Stolen Car - Take 3
05 - To Be True - Take 2
06 - The River - Take 5
07 - You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch) - Take 3
08 - The Price You Pay - Take 1
09 - I Wanna Marry You - Take 4
10 - Loose Ends - Take 2

This version of the bootleg seems to be hard to find. There are apparently 5 different versions of this CD out there (prior to JEMS), 3 of which have virtually the same exact artwork minus the CD. The one that seems to be very common is the the version without a label that has 'The Ties That Bind' written on the CD in the classic blue font used on The River album cover. This version has a red CD with different writing on it with a label of Red Robin records.

Notes (from Vigotone.com): All Things Must Surface is based on Unicorn Record's All Things Must Pass - Apple Acetate. The track order differs a bit, and one track is called "Whatever" on the Reproman collection and "I Still Love You" on the Unicorn version. Also, Vigotone/Reproman chose to separate false starts into their own track listings, as well as adding three bonus tracks (listed below). The Reproman collection includes the intro to "I'd Have You Anytime". This track isn't listed on the Unicorn set, but since it's so short (0:13), I'd bet that it's probably there someplace...

ATMS was a CDR release in the USA, but it was released on CD in Japan. Earlier Reproman titles were CDR copies of Midnight Beat CD titles. This is the first time Reproman copied a CDR release.

Recorded live at various venues on the 1981 tour (3 tracks are from Fall 1980).
A few studio overdubs were added at UMRK Central.
Side 1 was released in a different mix on "Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch".
Several other tracks appeared on later albums with extensive overdubs.
This would have been one of Frank's greatest albums, had it been released.

Remastering consisted of channel alignment, EQ & some modest limting.
