Dedicated to Glenn Frey, who passed away today (Jan. 18, 2016) at the age of 67. Per TMZ, "We're told the cause of death was a combination of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia. Frey had been battling intestinal issues for months and had surgery in November. We're told in the last few days his condition took a turn for the worse. He died in New York City." 

Here's a nice-sounding show that was shared on The Traders Den by Daren Johnson a number of years back. I created this new text file because Daren's old torrent also included Christopher Cross, who I wasn't interested in hearing (so I didn't grab). I also re-numbered the FLAC files to account for the Christopher Cross-related files I chose not to download.

It’s a very clean sounding tape, though there is some nearby crowd noise, but not enough to detract from the enjoyment of this very high spirited show. I had a 2 written on the inside of the J-Card and I clearly remember getting this from a trader in NY who had many great European contacts

This show was still early in the tour (the fourth show), and finds the band experimenting with setlist and sound effects. This may be the only show with the Firebird Suite, which drops right into the opening jam of Close To the Edge.

They were also experimenting with quadrophonic sound, with stacks of speakers on the lawn handling those effects like at old-style "azimuth coordinator" Floyd shows.

We moved to the lawn for the second set to better capture the quad effects, and found a nice spot near one of the speaker stacks. During Themes especially you can hear the sound moving in and out of the lawn speakers.

Because the sky broadcast had a couple of labbatts adds. I took them out.

Hi all - given a shortage of Nick’s tapes from the 90ies on dime, we decided to seed a few that aren’t here and haven’t been at least in the past 2-3 years, that sound nice, and for which we have some decent source/lineage info. In the past few days, I have been posting a show per tour :) 

Time to wrap it up with 1997-1998 and in light of my mostly sourceless tapes from a rather small tour of 1997, I am jumping straight into 1998! 
It’s a good one though!! This is a SBD recording from one and only show in Japan - 1998-08-02 Fuji Rock - first released by no less that one of dime’s respected Mods (!) jupiter2101 years ago :) Now, what I have here is actually a flac’ed version of that original shn release - and these flacs were posted by (as I discovered!) dime user zipty6. Zipty6 - if you see this post, I hope you don’t mind: it’s an awesome show, and I’m not sure if (or when) it was on dime before! I sent you a PM…. Below is information as it was in Zipty6’s info file and the original Jupiter’s info file and artwork are left in the folder untouched. 

I converted from shn to wav using mkwACT 0.97 beta 1. FLAC frontend v 1.7.0.1 was then used at level 8 with sector boundaries aligned.

Fantastic show by Mr Tom Keiffer and his amazing band! Cinderella is in my top 5 favorite bands of all time and I never miss seeing them when they're close. That fucking voice!! The mix was fantastic and the crowd enthusiastic but respectable. Another killer show in my back yard. I was in the sweet spot for this one, so crank it up!!

Notes:

I hesitated when CQ suggested that I go to this show. Even though I saw them once in 1975, Black Sabbath is not really my genre, and I don't consider myself a fan. I downloaded the latest album "13" to familiarize myself with their new songs and was surprised to find myself describing it as "excellent." I was overdue anyway for my first visit to JLL and have been avoiding it since it was the Nissan Pavilion, mostly due to parking lot horror stories. As a reward, I was frisked on the way in but all they found were my earplugs. It's a good thing I remembered those because this was an extremely loud performance. In fact it was so loud and I was enjoying the show so much that I didn't notice until listening to the recording that Ozzy's voice was, shall we say, "a bit pitchy" at times. I don't think anyone else noticed or cared for that matter as we watched this legendary band perform beyond our expectations. My immediate neighbors were quieter than I could have hoped for. The parking lot gridlock was about what I expected, except I made it worse for myself by losing my car for 20 minutes. I gotta stop doing that.

I made a CDR from the vinyl album with my Philips CDR 930. Then I encoded the tracks with Flac Frontend V1.7.1. Next I used Trader's little helper for the torrent creation.

Artwork is from the original simple black and white LP cover.

These are early versions and never released tracks, some have probably never been released on cd. I always admired Rolling Stones experts like Nico Zentgraf and Dieter Hoffmann who offered in their works exact data on recording dates and the sequence of the developing tracks. But can we ever be sure?

Dieter Hoffmann presents his comments on these tracks in the two volumes of Das Weissbuch Recording Index 1961-2003, (May 2003):

1. When the whip comes down: version II, already finished lead and backing vocals, additional pedal steel guitar by Ron Wood, Paris, Autumn 1977. This version also to be found on the bootleg cd Twilight zone.

2. Start me up: version I, this is not the reggae-ish version a.k.a. Never stop. Hoffmann calculates this as 4.13, Paris, Spring 1978. According to Hoffmann never released on a cd, so this one could be unique.

3. Claudine: version I, demo version with drums, bass, acoustic guitar, two electric guitars, already finished lyrics, Paris, Autumn 1977. Also released on the bootleg cd Megatrax Vol. 1.

4. Miss you: version IV, part, additional saxophone by Mel Collins and harp by Sugar Blue on version III, Paris, Autumn 1977. Released on bootleg cd's More works, Place Pigalle 5/6, Some tracks II.

5. Just my imagination: version I, according to Hoffmann 7.09, basic track with all instruments incl. backing vocals, Mick Jagger's early lead vocal "... look through my window", Paris, Autumn 1977. With soft count in 1, 2, 3, 4. Could be unique as never been released on cd.

6. I can't help it, a.k.a. Love you too much: version III, Hoffmann calculates this as 3.23, Paris, Spring 1978. Are the vocals not at least partly by Keith? Also released incomplete, only 2.27, on the bootleg cd Megatrax Vol. 1. This longer version maybe unique.
