Total Time ::: 1:22:20

::: SUPERB, crisp, clear, stereo SBD. Check samples for perusal and/or preliminary pentangular pleasure.
::: Warts: Almost none! Fixed dull spots but maybe missed a few. Tapeflip between #9&#10 (no songs missing). Board limiter sometimes slightly audible in left channel.
::: Opening acts (as per The Channel site).: The Lotterers (from ?), Musiceili (Irish-American band from Williamsburg, VA).
::: Same week their "Think Of Tomorrow" album released, tho' this set has more than 1/2 the "So Early In The Spring" album live.

Recording Information ::: soundboard -> Nakamichi 580 cassette deck -> master Maxell MX-S 100 metal cassette, Dolby B on.

Playback 2014-05-27 ::: master Maxell MX-S 100 metal cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 44.10kHz/16bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, -2.2% averaged pitch (speed) fix with single pass after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, NO equalisation] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded week of 2015-06-13.

Line-up ::: Bert Jansch - acoustic guitar, vocals // Jacqui McShee - vocals // Peter Kirtley - electric & acoustic guitars // Nigel Portman Smith - electric bass, piano // Gerry Conway - drums, percussion.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

DimeTravel 142 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader, meself! ::: Corrections welcome ::: ::: At one point Bert forgets he's not at the Iron Horse in Northampton (another night on the tour) & makes a comment to "Jordi" (the Iron Horse owner), so don't be confused. This was an odd gig. To be honest, the band just didn't really fit into this particular rock club environment - or at least that was my feeling. Two bands opened (I guess - only a vague memory). The whole thing seemed too clinical or something. Still, the club had a fine sound system in a large room (held 1700, but nowhere near that many present for Pentangle), so everything was fairly well miked. That was often not true in the folk clubs Pentangle played in, where Gerry's drums were often far too loud to be in the PA mix at all). So in the end, it's a very nicely done, somewhat narrow but stereo, soundboard master of a live Pentangle show. Once the mix is mostly balanced somewhere in the midst of #1 (tho' the bass doesn't get properly done 'til later). I think this is one of the best recordings there is of the era, soundwise, and the performance is very solid. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees

Notes by the uploader:
There've been various versions of the radio broadcast of this show, some I've see were a)silver cd bootleg(incomplete?), b)FM broadcast with Land/Gloria missing, c)FM Radio(mono DAT recording but more complete), d)FM Radio, and there've probably been various edits using these recordings. Here's another, this one recorded from satellite...

As well as getting a load of free German TV channels on the Astra satellite each channel also had alternate audio tracks carrying radio stations. I had 2 phono leads running from the satellite receiver to my hifi so I could make recordings of the radio shows.

On 12th Oct 1996 NDR2 broadcast a 54 minute shortened version of this show (consisting of tracks 1-6,12-14,16... I think. I rubbed out the titles of side 2 of the cassette to make way for the new version so I'm not 100% certain of 12,13,14). On 1st Nov 1997 NDR2 broadcast a 100 minute version, with a break for the news after the first 55 min. I recorded on a c120 so I wouldn't have to miss anything while turning the tape, then copied this onto two 60's, so what you get here is 1st gen. The first 25 min (tracks 1-5) are from the 1996 broadcast (this is where the extra talk parts are - after people Have The Power and after Summer Cannibals) and the rest is from the 1997 broadcast. (There's a DJ announcement lasting 7 seconds after Dancing Barefoot which more than likely wasn't present in the 2nd broadcast). I left the DJ announcement as he is talking over audience applause and it's only 7 seconds so it's no big deal, but I removed the other DJ announcements at the start and end of each hour as they were very polite and didn't talk over the beginning or end as sometimes happens so it was easy to remove them without losing anything.

In the spectral view it cuts off at around 15000Hz. I checked one of the FM sources (the 2nd link in the contrast clause up at the top) and it has the same cutoff point, so presumably that's typical for this station. You can also see a little line that's a 16k carrier wave in the part recorded in 1997, but weirdly it's not present in the part recorded from the 1996 broadcast.

Crystal Ship was the final song of the broadcast, but in line with other recordings (and the correct order proven by an audience recording) I've moved it to it's proper place with small crossfades. Nothing else has been touched apart from removing a click 0:22 into Beneath The Southern Cross, and another click 1:20 into About A Boy.

It sounds like there's a bit of clipping/distortion in a few drumbeats in part of Free Money, but on examination of the wave there are peaks that are higher than the distorted drumbeats and yet are not distorted, so the problem must be with the broadcast. Probably the guy on the soundboard had a fader set too high or something, but the sound guy is pretty fast in fixing things and it quickly goes right. (I also noticed some distorted drumbeats in Because The Night & Land which again don't last long.)

Additional comments:
Audience recording from Ronnie Scott's, London, UK, August 1st, 1998. In my opinion this is the best of the 1998 shows. Excellent sound is an understatement! This is probably as close to a soundboard recording you can get with an audience recording in my opinion. I wrote the same about July 27 but this is perhaps even slightly better. Also great musically. A complete concert. Rare versions of The Long Highway and Wild Theme. Guest player on Mystery Train and Bewildered, the sax player Pat Crumly from the Pat Crumly Quartet and the John Critchinson Quartet etc. Remastered sound. Available on 2 CD-R.

SETLIST (2h. 20 min.):

Additional comments (http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/): DVD-Video containing the last concert from the 1.998 Tour. Filmed from the second table, so sometimes there are some heads in front of the camera, but most of it is very good. Some distortion on the bottom of the screen during the first songs, but not too bad. Great close ups from all band members. A lot of jokes and fun during this last concert. Mark introduces the song "Rope stretching", which is about lynching. Mark says: "I would like to dedicate it to our next door neighbours who have the builders in for about a year and a half...". Special guest this night was Pat Crumley on saxophone. He plays on "Mystery train" and "Bewildered". During this tour, "Wild Theme" and "The long highway" were only played a couple of times so that's pretty rare matrial. Unfortunately, the last song is cut. Apart from that, this DVD features the complete concert. Good picture and sound quality.

Show comments:
What a great show from the R30 tour. This was our second show of the tour as we all made the trip up to Nashville to see the opening night a couple months earlier I think we all enjoyed this one a little better as they just sounded great. Many thanks goes out to Steve for doing the matrix for this audio. It's a lot of work to put together something like this. Most of all spending a lot of time before the show finding a good channel to get the IEM. Getting there early to try and not only catch the soundcheck but just to find a good channel for the scanner recording, in this case he was able to get Geddy's. As for my audio it was a really good one so this recording came out really nice.

This release is in conjunction with cbg5150's video that was just posted as well. Extra special thanks to him for the video, it's great to watch a show we went to over 10 years ago and relive that great night. I think we all owe him a big pat on the back for not only releasing all his great videos but just for doing all those great shows in the past, i don't think a lot of people realize how much effort goes into video taping a rock concert, especially back in the days he started doing them so i'd like to give an extra special thanks to him. We have gone to many great shows together since we both moved and now live just a couple hours away from each other. There will be many more releases in the future with the cbg5150/MrBakeman combo.

This has been burning a hole on my shelf, thought it was about time to post it.

Not a great IEM feed - but good... Mark Goldenbergs (guitar player feed) - vocals were Very low.
Good Audience recording from Tim, fills in vocals and various keyboard sections.
Mix is about 50-50 thoughout.
For those who already have the aud recording, this is a nice improvement.
Artwork is from the show.

Some say it was raining at this show. It wasn't. It was more like standing in the Niagra Falls. Upon leaving I felt as I'd had a bath with all clothes on. I wasn't dressed or prepaired for this as the weather forecast said sunny and no rain. I probably would not have taped if I knew this but glad I did becasue it turned out quite nice given the circumstances. Needless to say, the rain is audible on the recording but to my surpirse not as much as I was expecting. And it stopped raining after a while (I was still soaking wet but that's another story). And it was a great, great show!

And so it begins, after taking the summer off, I will now post at least 100 consecutive 2015 masters. Except I am not going to count this one since there are already other sources out there. A little late starting because I went 9 days without a computer. Or a little early because my whole reason for putting a hold on seeding new stuff and reseeding old stuff is I was planning on going to as many shows as I am physically capable of. Except this year I was physically capable of a lot less than last year (which saw me going out a record 21 nights in a row) because the aging process is speeding up, and I got really sick smack dab in the middle of August with chills in a hundred degree weather derailing many shows. The one that hurt the most was missing 2001: A Space Odyssey with orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl as any bands I blew off will sure enough be rolling around again.

But it gave me time to try to catch up. (Then I got sick again in early October but not so sick I had to miss anything I was looking forward to for six months)

About this show:

I first saw Rush in 1986, my 3rd ever show. Always wanted to see them again but it was just never convenient. Not to mention sometimes I like them but most of the time they bore the hell out of me. This time around I wasn't even attuned to the last show twangs, only I had money when tickets went on sale and it was at the Forum which was a much better choice than Staples Center, Irvine, Nokia Theatre or any of the awful places they usually play so I decided to jump on one of the cheap seats. Sorry folks, it's always the cheap seats. Except they are not really cheap anymore. (Thanks Sir Mick!)

Anyway I have hardly listened to Rush at all in the last several decades but I really enjoyed the hell out of this show. It was one of the best executed classic rock shows I have ever seen. It's been so long that some songs like Distant Early Warning I totally forgot even existed but brought me back to a time when my musical consciousness was still constrained by the KLOS playlist. Also I always need music to sleep and in the 1980's I had a tape of Exit Stage Left I would play at bedtime. With my eyes closed, Red Barchetta always stimulated all sorts of visuals in my mind's eye as I drifted off, though I still have no idea what a Barchetta even looks like. So I was glad they played that. It was like I was ten years and it was bedtime all over again.

My favorite part had to be the encore and especially What You're Doing. If only they had stuck with that sound instead revolutionizing geek rock, who knows how history might have changed. Probably as well remembered and beloved as Budgie. Except without being covered by Metallica.

Thankfully the crowd around me was enjoying it too and was very attentive and I didn't even catch a hint of inappropriate conversation anywhere around me which probably helped me enjoy it more than I usually do at arena shows. Gonna get the DVD in a few weeks too. Probably only the second time in my life I will be spending real money on Rush but the show was that good.
