"Now, here's something we hope you'll really like!" - Rocky J. Squirrel

In the early years of audience shot concert videos, in addition to pioneering video tapers such as Mr. P in Quebec, Mr. O in Michigan and CBG on the East Coast, there was also Mr. J in Missouri. Mr. J began shooting concerts in Kansas City and surrounding cities as far back as 1986 and perhaps even earlier.

Today, on the 30th anniversary, Analog Kid Audio Video is pleased to bring you one of Mr. J's best-known recordings: Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble live at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. This – dare I say – legendary footage is being shared digitally from the original 8mm Video8 master tape for the first time ever.

While Mr. J's ticket stub reads, "General admission," legend has it this recording was captured from third row not far from center stage. Unlike now, when any music fan can shoot video on a phone from almost every seat in the house, shooting video in 1987 was no small task. To walk out of a concert back then with the entire show captured from third row was virtually unprecedented.

What this is: raw, in the moment footage featuring chest-to-head close ups of one of history's guitar greats. You'll see Stevie Ray smiling as he and Double Trouble rip through a blistering performance. The view from third row is close enough to make out the individual six strings on his guitars, details you would not see from a camera located further away. This is also vintage analog video, warts and all. The master tape has aged well yet comes with some minor dropouts and glitches throughout.

What this is not: it is not shot with a steady cam. Mr. J likely used a second or third generation Video8 camera, long before image stabilization technology helped reduce camera shake. If you do not enjoy shaky videos, this is not for you. Additionally, this is not without obstructions from the audience as well as occasional camera ducks. Consider these flaws as proof of authenticity. Without them, it is possible this footage would not exist at all.
