There was still no surprise in the setlist, the Smiths stuck to the same songs and order as for most of the dates on this tour. Tickets were £6.50.
As the band entered stage, Morrissey took the microphone and shouted a loud "Hello!". As he sang the title line in "The Queen Is Dead", he pulled out a board saying THE QUEEN IS DEAD which he waved about for the rest of the song. For the following number, "Panic", he used another prop, this time a noose which he swung around to highlight the "Hang the DJ!" lyric. That song was extended with a longer drum intro. Before "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" in which as usual he didn't sing the outro chorus, Morrissey asked "Could I please ask the journalists to stop throwing things?". "Ask" and "Is It Really So Strange?" were both introduced, the former as "...our new single." In the latter Morrissey sang "Oh yes you can kick me" where in the studio version he usually sings "Oh yes you can punch me".
At the beginning of "Meat Is Murder" Johnny picked notes from an unidentified song. During the final number of the main set, "I Know It's Over", Morrissey gradually pulled his shirt over his head and sang the end of the song with his head hidden inside it. Returning for the second encore, "Still Ill", Morrissey thanked the audience "Thank you you've been very nice, very kind, very generous". In that piece, he slightly changed a line to "If I were you I really wouldn't bother". At the beginning of "Bigmouth Strikes Again", Morrissey threw the t-shirt he had just changed into to his fans and sang the song barechested.
This concert was recorded by the BBC for later radio broadcast. In 2003, the whole concert was webcast on BBC6's web radio.

BOOTLEGS
Quite a few bootlegs were produced from various radio broadcasts over the years. As the concert was partially officially released on "Rank", the aim of bootleg buyers is to get the six missing songs: "I Want The One I Can't Have", "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Frankly Mr Shankly", "Never Had No One Ever", "Meat Is Murder" and "How Soon Is Now?". But only three of these are circulated in radio quality. The other three are only available from an audience recording.
The most complete bootleg is a double-LP titled "The Bad Boy From A Good Family" (also known as "That Funny Manchester Group"). It features a fair audience recording of the complete gig ("Rusholme Ruffians" is even featured twice, at the end of side A and the beginning of side B). It was later transfered on many fanmade cds under the same title, or "The Complete Rank".
These are the only sources for the six songs missing on "Rank".
The second best option is the "Higher Rank" and "Unruly Girl" bootleg cds, produced from a radio broadcast cd and featuring 17 songs in great quality, including "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "Frankly Mr Shankly" and "How Soon Is Now?" absent from "Rank".
"Dance With Octopusses", an 'official' bootleg cd, puts together 12 songs, including the same three absent from "Rank" but included on "Higher Rank". The quality is also excellent, as they also come from a radio broadcast.
"Morrissey 1959-1986" is produced around a 4 February 1983 concert and four radio and tv sessions. It includes three songs from this gig, the same missing tracks mentioned in the previous paragraph. "Flowers" is produced around a 18 March 1985 concert and 2 radio session and includes two songs from this gig, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" and "How Soon Is Now?".
The "A Nice Bit Of Meat 2" mixed content bootleg LP and "A Nice Bit Of Meat" mixed content bootleg CD include "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" and "Frankly Mr Shankly" among other live tracks, radio sessions and soundchecks. The "Acid Head" bootleg 7" available in a few vinyl colours is rather useless to non-completists. It pairs "Cemetry Gates" and "I Know It's Over" from this concert with the Peel session of "Half A Person".
A visual souvenir is available for this gig. An audience recording of the whole concert (minus the intro to "The Queen Is Dead) is circulated on bootleg VHS and DVDs. An alternate audio bootleg available from bootleg traders but not on the internet might have been lifted from this DVD.
MP3s were produced for all of these bootlegs and are commonly found on the usual file sharing networks. The recording available on "Unruly Girl" mentioned above can be found under its alternate title "Higher Rank".
