David Bowie - The Last Five Years (DVDfull pro-shot)

David Bowie
The Last Five Years
A BBC2 Broadcast - January 7, 2017

A BBC2 HD-PCTV DVB-T2 TS capture>Fully authored to DVD5 with Magix movie edit pro.
A Documentary split into 18 chapters

Run time:- 1:29:37

Some words from the BBC:
There was nothing predictable about David Bowie. Everything was designed to intrigue, to challenge, to defy all expectations. But perhaps no period in David Bowie's extraordinary career raised more fascination, more surprise, and more questions than the last five years. This is an intimate portrait of one of the defining artists of the twentieth and early twenty first centuries, told by the people who knew him best - his friends and artistic collaborators.

This film takes a detailed look at Bowie's last albums, The Next Day and Blackstar, and his play Lazarus. In his final five years, Bowie not only began producing music again, but returned to the core and defining themes of his career. This film explores how Bowie was a far more consistent artist than many interpretations of his career would have us believe. It traces the core themes from his final works and relates them to his incredible back catalogue. His urge to communicate feelings of spirituality, alienation and fame underpin his greatest works from the 1960s to 2016. This is what lies at the heart of his success and appeal - music that deals with what it means to be human in a way that goes far beyond the normal palette of a rock star.

The film is not a comprehensive overview of his entire career, but an in-depth exploration of pivotal moments that show how the themes, the narrative and the approach is consistent - it is simply the palette that changes. The film includes every key member of the Next Day band, the Blackstar band and those who worked with him on the stage play Lazarus. In addition, old friends and colleagues are on hand to explore how the work of the last five years relates to Bowie's back catalogue. And, as in David Bowie: Five Years, there is a wealth of unseen and rare archive footage.

This release was carefully compiled from the best available sources. There has yet to be a release that collects the best moments from these tapes in one place, from the actual original reels. Many releases, even new ones, are still using cassette dubs and other inferior sources. Sound quality is at an official release level throughout with little to no tape hiss.

Geetarz Comments:
A number of shows in 1986 and 1987 were recorded for the release of a live album. However, with the pending release of the then-groundbreaking "Crossroads" box set, the project was shelved lest it compete commercially. There are a number of ROIO releases purporting to be the "Unreleased Live Album", and to the best of my knowledge, most are based only on speculation as to what the track list of the speculative live album would have been, and sourced from the various soundboards that have made their way into circulation. So, we really have no idea what an actual official release might have contained, but I'd like to think that this particular release might be a really good guess as to what it might have included.

Pink Floyd - Ballets De Marseille (DVDfull pro-shot)

(DVDfull pro-shot)

BALLETS DE MARSEILLE - Pink Floyd Ballet

format: NTSC
ratio : 4:3
video : 6000kbps
audio : Linear PCM 48kHz
sub-titles : English / French

Details and historical background [1]:

Pink Floyd's flirtation with the cultural establishment culminated in the autumn of 1970 with French choreographer Roland Petit's proposed ballet, based on Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past and featuring Rudolf Nureyev plus sixty other dancers, which was to have incorporated Floyd compositions performed by the band and a 108 piece orchestra. "Pretty amazing!", Gilmour gushed to Melody Maker. "Something nobody in our field has ever done ..." "Freakier and freakier," announced Rolling Stone. "Pink Floyd is now into ballet ...".

Prior to their lunch in Paris on 4 December with Petit, Nureyev, and Roman Polanski (who hoped to direct a film of the ballet), the Floyd dutifully attempted to familiarize themselves with Proust's eight-volume classic. All found it slow-going, especially Dave, who gave up after eighteen pages. Only Roger managed to struggle past the first book. By the time Waters, Mason, and Steve O'Rourke got to Paris, however, Petit had decided to set aside Proust in favour of The Arabian Nights. "Everyone just sat there drinking this wine and getting more and more drunk," Roger recalled, "with more and more poovery going on around the table, until someone suggested Frankenstein and Nureyev started getting a bit worried... I was just sitting there enjoying the meat and the vibes, saying nothing... And when Polanski was drunk enough he started to suggest we make the blue movie to end all blue movies, and then it all petered out
into cognac and coffee and we jumped into our cars and split. God knows what happened after we left !".

Over two years later, Roland Petit finally would choreograph a Pink Floyd ballet, but without Nureyev, Polanski, or the 108-piece orchestra. A set of five live shows was performed in Marseille (November 22-26, 1972), that did not form part of the scheduled European winter tour.
The programme was divided in three sections :
- Allumez les etoiles
- La rose malade
- The Pink Floyd ballet, in four movements based on:
One of these days
Careful with that axe, Eugene
Obscured by clouds / When you're in
Echoes

There was eventually a serie of eight performances set in Paris between January 13rd and February 2nd (two shows per day) but the band didn't play live each time (a tape was used when the band didn't play).

The original ballets have never been fully filmed, so this DVD presents a 1977 studio rendition. While the band wasn't playing on this occasion we have here a rare opportunity to see what the ballet was actually.

However, as the ballet was one of the very first "melange des genres" attempt to cross pop music and classical dance, there has been some news reports with live sequences. These snippets (and more) are available for the very first time on this DVD.

This DVD was received from an anonymous fan without any info about the lineage. However this is by far the best quality we've been able to get for this ballet filmed in TV studios.
Colours are superb and there are 2 audio tracks available: an amazing stereo remastered soundtrack and the original mono TV soundtrack.

The tracklist is:
1. One Of These Days
2. Careful With That Axe, Eugene
3. Obscured By Clouds
4. When You're In
5. Echoes

There are also very interesting bonus snippets, showing the Floyd rehearsing OOTD with the dancers, and some other snippets taken from rehearsals and live performances with the Floyd and the Ballet of Marseille. Apart from a short extract of CWTAE, this footage never surfaced previously! There are even more bonus with extremely rare documents related to the Ballet and Roland Petit.

Last but not least, the DVD includes English and French sub-titles!

Jimi Hendrix - 1990 - Laughing Dice - BBC Documentary (DVDfull pro-shot) by REQUEST

(DVDfull pro-shot)

Jimi Hendrix "Laughing Dice"
BBC 2 Documentary
Length 27 minutes
Aired: September 5, 1990

This is a BBC Documentary, aired 20 years after Jimi died in september 1990. It is a collage of Hendrix footage and BBC Archive footage, without a voice over, but with texts. It starts off with 30 seconds of the Psychedelic 'Manic Depresion' broadcast of April 17th 1967 ( Don't expext too much of that .... ) It also contains good footage of 'Wild Thing' at Clark Universty March 15th 1968.

Plus
The Lulu show (HY SOYL and VC)
Isle of Wight (a bit of Machine Gun, mistakenly stated as 'Red House', shame on you BBC.)
A lot of the old 'Experience' film footage.

So, nothing groundbreaking, but good to burn to DVD, watch and put on the shelf. The DVD was extracted from a VHS copy, that was directly made from the TV airing in 1990. Sound is a little flat, but OK for a VHS.
