Comments: This was originally posted to Dime by "markiki" in two parts back in 2007; it has reappeared as a complete set a couple of times, but since its last posting was in early 2011, there may be some Neil Young fans more recent to Dime who don't have this.
For 1991, this is a superb audience capture. As noted in the info file, this was filmed on a tripod with a long lens, and as the screenshots will bear out, the filmer got a lot of good close-ups. I'm not clear whether the audio was recorded separately and dubbed on, or whether the shotgun mikes fed into the camera audio, but the sound is quite clear and the mix is pretty good for an audience-shot 1990s video. There are a very moments where the image drifts, but by and large the video is closely focused on Neil, Frank, and Billy, and you get a lot of good interplay between the three. If you're even a casual fan of this era and don't have this, you'll probably consider it a worthwhile addition to your collection.
22 years later, I'm still kicking myself for missing this tour. I remember the Chicago date in January being one of the coldest nights of the tour, and I couldn't bring myself to brave the elements to head down to the Horizon without a ticket to catch this show. I've seen Neil many times since, but rarely has he reached this level of intensity live since this tour (IMO). The "Smell The Horse" tour was in support of his current "Ragged Glory" release, and billed as a protest to the (first) Persian Gulf war. The overall feel of the show was reminiscent of the protest and anger of the Vietnam era, with the tone set by the Hendrix-influenced "Star Spangled Banner" to open the set. Even though these dates were relatively short (100-105 minutes, on average), the performances were blistering ... I've found Neil's 1990s and 2000s shows to be a little more self-indulgent, but on this tour he kept his instincts in check and the band delivered jams that were focused and powerful. Aside from the 1988 Blue Notes tour, this is my favorite Neil Young period.
This demands an audio-only rip!
