Excellent show. The band is hot. Plants vocals on Dazed are a little unusual. Only Plants vocals prevent this from being Ex-/Ex quality. They have an annoying tinny edge to them.

The Band outtakes, Bearsville Studios, 1969:

(Levon's book says the The Band outtakes were at The Hit Factory, and also seems to imply that maybe one of the cuts was actually recorded in California, see pp. 194-195.)
4. Get Up Jake
5. Baby, Don't You Do It

Woodstock, August 19, 1969:

(Woodstock was 17th of August 1969, not 19th as the bootleg says. Also of note is that the source tape changes to a different one at 00:01:41 in middle of "Don't Ya Tell Henry.")
6. Don't Ya Tell Henry

Bob Dylan & The Band, Isle Of Wight, August 31, 1969:

8. Highway 61 Revisited

Hollywood Bowl October 7, 1970:

Disc 3 - The Band, "Share Your Love"

1. Caledonia Mission
2. Loving You (Is Sweeter Than Ever)

This 3 CD The Band bootleg was released in 1997 and should not be confused with the official Across the Great Divide box set. This is the third release in The Genuine Bootleg Series, for some reason sub-titled Take 4. The two first bootleg boxes, The Genuine Bootleg Series, and The Genuine Bootleg Series, Take 2, were mainly filled with Dylan material. Take 4 only has a small amount of Dylan content that is available elsewhere. A Take 3 CD set, all Dylan content, was released in 1999.

As usual for the Genuine Bootleg Series, this one continues the same tradition of high production values with multiple gatefold glossy-color sleeves. It also sports inner disc sleeves (each w/color pics + tracklist) and a 36-page booklet containing full text of the July '91 Goldmine article along with more photos and the track listings. All of the Genuine Bootleg Series have been reissued a few times, in cardboard sleeves and jewel boxes, and The Genuine Bootleg Series Vol 4 seem to exist also under the title Statue of Liberty.

58 tracks in all, including early Hawks material, outtakes from 1965 - 1967 The Basement Tapes and Big Pink sessions, outtakes from The Band, Rock of Ages, and Planet Waves, various Band live recordings, bits of a 1988 Levon Helm concert, and three demos for Jericho. A nice set with good sound quality.

The nice thing is that it features quite a lot of special guests: Chris White & Dave O'Higgins (saxophone), Chris Barber (trombon), Bobby Valentino (fiddle) and B.J. Cole (pedal-steel). Nicely filmed with some good close ups. The picture quality is good, allthough it's a bit dark. The sound quality is very good. Complete concert. Cover.

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978.  His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity.  In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes.  He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings.  In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands:  Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated.  Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes.  No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers.  Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community.  Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer the higher resolution.

NOTES FROM PETE:
The origins of this copy of the recording are as follows:
I went to University in Sheffield in the UK in October 1981. Sometime in my first year there (not sure if it was 81 or 82) I noticed an advert on a noticeboard in the University's Student Union building by a guy offering rare tapes of Pink Floyd and a number of other bands. I bought this recording on a TDK AD C60 and C120 Cassette (see the photos) from the guy who turned out to be a post-graduate. From my recollection (and it is 27 years ago!) the tapes I got were from his first gen copy from the masters. They are definitely not from vinyl (you can just tell!!!) and it predates the CD or CDR bootleg era. Ironically I think the cassettes have survived well because I only played them a few times as I was more into Stones and Clapton at the time. I guess it could be as little as four or five times prior to me finally capturing them as digital files.I was prompted to transfer it to digital format by two things:

1) I downloaded a couple of the bootlegs from the same date via the internet and I thought, "This is not half as good quality as I remember my tapes being"
2) A friend was clearing out his loft (attic) and offered me a little used NAD tapedeck, so now I had no excuse not to investigate my hunch that I had a better copy of this recording

The finished item is superb. I have really enjoyed getting back into this whole 68-72 Floyd era. I think the desire to get the best version of Sheffield 1970 out to the fan-base has made me go back and take an even greater interest in the legitimate and (ever expanding) bootleg stuff from this era.

A final, but very important note. A big "thank you" to John Johnstone (a colleague from work) who suggested I offered up the raw WAVs of the tapes to the Harvested Team. What an excellent piece of advice!

NOTES FROM MOB:
Pete's tapes were in really good condition, despite their age. The original recording was done with mono equipment, and the music was well centered between the 2 channels of the tapes (generally, old tapes tend to have fluctuations between channels, even if the original recording is mono, but it was not the case here). The hiss was very stable throughout the tapes, with almost no sign of warble.

The main problem with the recording was the speed. The tapes ran too fast, and the speed was not constant throughout the show (this is a well known problem of old analog tape recorders, very dependent on the battery levels fluctuations during a concert). Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast was almost at correct speed, but the speed of the following tracks increased progressively during the songs. The real difficulties began with A Saucerful Of Secrets, because the batteries were probably unloading faster. The speed was different depending on the part of the song, so I had to apply speed correction on a case by case basis. Atom Heart Mother was even worse, the very end really too fast.

After dealing with the speed issues, I carefully applied slight EQ to enhance some particular frequencies that were buried in the original recording (probably due to the original recorder and mics characteristics). An important note is that I didn't try to dehiss the recording. As a result, this remaster still has a good amount of hiss. After all, this is a 2nd gen and you cannot have a significant reduction of hiss without degrading the music clarity. Moreover, I wanted to keep the sound as natural as possible, because the best sounding version of that concert until now was the highly processed "Disgusting Hardly Music", remastered from Pete's tapes too, but with a lot of NR applied. I wanted this new remaster to be a nice alternative to DHM: people who can't stand hiss and don't mind about digital NR artefacts can still enjoy DHM, while people who prefer unprocessed recordings should definitely adopt "Rise & Shine" (of course it's not striclty "unprocessed" because I corrected the speed, applied some EQ and carefully cleaned the drop-outs and tape flaws, but anyway this still sounds "natural", unlike the other versions I heard).

As usual with all my remasters, I also manually cleaned every tape flaw that I could detect (cuts, small drop-outs, pops, crackles ...).

Here are the comparisons we did with the other RoIOs from that concert:
- "Allen's Psychedelic Breakfast" (from Circus Sun APSB 1270 A/B LP): full of vinyl clicks and pops
- "A Psychedelic Night" (Triangle Records PYCD 038 & 039): this silver bootleg CD is muffled and denoised to death
- "Alan's Psychedelic Christmas": 3rd or 4th gen from VHS, too dehissed
- "Pink's Psychedelic Last Night" (Highland HL176): again, very processed (NR)
- "Alan's Psychedelic Master Tape" (Ayanami-227): certainly not from mastertape (Ayanami often claims to have the masters while it's wrong) and over-processed
- "1st Gen": this RoIO is the only other "unprocessed" version apparently circulating, but it sounds more distant than Pete's 2nd gen; I guess the title "1st gen" is not correct, it's more probably 2nd or 3rd gen.
- "Disgusting Hardly Music" (FOS-CDR-001 ): music is very clear but NR artifacts are obvious

To summarize, we think that this new release "Rise & Shine" has the following benefits:
- it's the only Sheffield RoIO with "natural" sound (apart from the so-called "1st gen" which is sounding much more distant)
- it's the only Sheffield RoIO with correct speed for all the tracks
- it's the only Sheffield RoIO with the drop-outs and tape flaws corrected (in particular, you can check the very beginning of Careful's scream: the abrupt cut in the master recording is magically fixed ;-) )

Thanks to Pete for approaching us with this project and supplying us with the great source material. And, of course, thanks to MOB, the James Guthrie of bootlegs!
Enjoy and share freely!

Pink Floyd, New Pre-FM Master (with Echoes!) 1974-11-16 Wembley
If you're a Pink Floyd collector, you probably have several versions of this particular recording. However, you've never heard it this good--and indeed, you've never heard the pre-FM soundboard 28-minute version of Echoes that appears for the first time in this set.
This is a noticeable upgrade over the EX roio called "Brain Damage" that was torrented on the Groove nearly a year ago.

These were EAC'ed from the original silvers by the person who brought this into circulation this week (thanks bbatnifty!)

Here is the text file:

Comments Justin Cook:
Darren Glen put in numerous hours at the studio remastering this bootleg, using Lovetown Melbourne - Night Two as his primary source material. The result is outstanding. Again, crowd noise is present--there is no way to eliminate that - but the vocals are at the forefront and all of the instruments can be clearly heard. This is definitely one of the best first leg Loevtown recordings available. It is infinitely better than Tonight I Feel Drunk and personally, I like it better than the raw sound offered in Lovetown Melbourne - Night Two.

Comments Darren Glen:
There are three different recordings of this show in the archive, all from different positions within the arena and with different equipment. By far the best recording was probably a transfer to CD-R from the original source tape...this version sounds like it was recorded with excellent mics and to a recording unit that wasnt plagued with Auto Gainwhich is good, as this allows the recording to retain excellent punch and dynamics. However I imagine that the mics used were not flat in response, leaving the sound seriously lacking in bottom end, and with a fairly harsh top end, and the recording was playing at the wrong speed (too fast). Unfortunately this recording was also missing 3 1/2 songs....but half of 'I Will Follow' remained. All of these anomalities were corrected and the frequency balance restored to a full, clean and tight response. The second recording was from a different location and using less superior equipment, but fortunately the missing songs from the better version above were in complete form here. This show was on a first generation TDK SA tape and was fully restored (NR, EQ, Speed Adj, etc) before the missing songs were re-balanced and slotted into the above recording in the correct position to make a complete recording for the project...entitled Bad at its Best...this is without a doubt the most incredible performance of Bad in the archive....and better than any of the versions of Bad from 87 shows i've heard as well. Bonos voice roars as he puts all of the singing phrases that he uses individually in different versions of Bad all into this one performance, and flawlessly. He ends up singing in all 3 sections right to the very end of the song just to fit them all in, instead of leaving the last section an instrumental as is usually the case. (This extension only happened one other time, in Tokyo.)
