Label: Venus Productions
Label Number: VP-2012-10
Release Date: 2012

Another superb collection of undubbed and unedited masters from Venus Productions. The fourth in the series and the best to date. Highlights include the first track Burning Love takes 5-6 and the 1980 re-makes of For Ol' Times' Sake and Bitter They Are. Listen out as well for the infamous barking dog at the end of Way Down. In fact every track on this one is a winner.

Pony Express Records released four different versions of a bootleg called "Before The Fame" in the late 1990's. The first edition is the rarest (I'm still hunting down a copy) and this version, the fourth, is the most common. Each addition evolved with more songs, with the original release (1 CD) duplicating songs on other bootlegs, the second release (1 CD) having the same songs except three of them which are replaced by different tracks, the third release (1 CD) is the exact same release as version two but with different packaging and artwork, and the fourth and final version (2 CD) featured the most tracks with seven more than the previous release evolving to a two CD set.

The tracks themselves are unreleased studio outtakes from 1972 and 1973, referred to as 'Laurel Canyon Music Publishing Demos'. Some recordings were distributed on tape, others on acetates, to mostly England. They were recorded at various locations noted below. Most of these songs were first released into mainstream circulation on this bootleg, in excellent quality because most ofthe tracks were transferred from the original master tapes or at least very low generation copies of them. This early material of Bruce's is a fanscinating glimpse into his early writing with songs that play out in front of you like a story - so visual. The songs recorded at Jim Cretecos' apartment and Mediasound Studios were recorded and produced by Cretecos, with Mike Appel also producing (Cretecos was a producer and engineer that recorded most of Bruce's early material). The others recorded at 914 Sound Studios were recorded and engineered by Pete Weiss during the 1972 sessios and by Louis Lahav in the 1973 sessions (I honestly like his mixes the most out of all of the engineers Bruce has gone through).

As the inner insert of the bootleg says, "This rare release invites you to listen to Bruce Springsteen "before the fame, but not before the genius."

5. Baby, Don't You Do It

Woodstock, August 19, 1969:

(Woodstock was 17th of August 1969, not 19th as the bootleg says. Also of note is that the source tape changes to a different one at 00:01:41 in middle of "Don't Ya Tell Henry.")

This 3 CD The Band bootleg was released in 1997 and should not be confused with the official Across the Great Divide box set. This is the third release in The Genuine Bootleg Series, for some reason sub-titled Take 4. The two first bootleg boxes, The Genuine Bootleg Series, and The Genuine Bootleg Series, Take 2, were mainly filled with Dylan material. Take 4 only has a small amount of Dylan content that is available elsewhere. A Take 3 CD set, all Dylan content, was released in 1999.

As usual for the Genuine Bootleg Series, this one continues the same tradition of high production values with multiple gatefold glossy-color sleeves. It also sports inner disc sleeves (each w/color pics + tracklist) and a 36-page booklet containing full text of the July '91 Goldmine article along with more photos and the track listings. All of the Genuine Bootleg Series have been reissued a few times, in cardboard sleeves and jewel boxes, and The Genuine Bootleg Series Vol 4 seem to exist also under the title Statue of Liberty.

58 tracks in all, including early Hawks material, outtakes from 1965 - 1967 The Basement Tapes and Big Pink sessions, outtakes from The Band, Rock of Ages, and Planet Waves, various Band live recordings, bits of a 1988 Levon Helm concert, and three demos for Jericho. A nice set with good sound quality.

Description:
This release is of great interest to all lovers of glam and its rather rare female direction. So, the unsurpassed "leather" Suzy! Why unrivaled? Yes, because none of the ladies sang so loudly and cheerfully, mercilessly tormenting the bass guitar. The program includes performances on two German television programs and a few backstages. The program is interesting primarily because it represents Susie in the prime of life.

The source of these tapes tells me this is 2 of 3 tapes supplied for the DITL sessions. The other tape, which wasn't transferred, contains a song that my source said was so personal to Phil he didn't feel it should be traded. All credit for this transfer goes to my fellow Down Under Brother Woody, who I think has done an excellent job with the transfer. He also is doing the art, which should be available shortly.

Pink Floyd - 1969-1980 - Antiques And Curios (STU/SHN)

(Studio FLAC)

Default PF - 1969-1980 - Antiques And Curios (JS&TBD)

This is a disc of unusual, unique or otherwise rare live performances. It takes quite a lot of trading to hear all these odd tracks, so I thought a compilation might be in order. This is by no means a collection of the "definitive" versions of these performances, although many of them are appearing here in improved versions from what normally circulates. It's a mixed bag, in any case, but sound quality was not the deciding factor, as you will see...

This is an excellent disc for those who are not the 'hard core' collectors, although some of this will interest you types as well.

"Antiques and Curios"
rare live performances and other strangeness
produced by Jim Shoes and the Barkin' Dogs

1) Green is the Colour [3:20]
2) Careful With That Pipe Wrench, Larry [3:19]
from BBC Night Ride, May, 12, 1969
Ok, now what the hell is this doing on a "rarities" disc? Well, these tracks are often missing and/or replaced with the 1970 versions on many a RoIO, even some of the 'definitive' BBC collections These tracks are almost as rare as the 1970 'Fat Old Sun' broadcast found on Harvested's 'Mooed Music'. These have the bird sounds, and 'careful' isn't quite a normal version (ergo, my not-so-normal title). I would be interested to know if anyone has these tracks in pristine quality, as these are not ideal. [VG]
source: 'In Memoriam 1967-1981' Vinyl LP Box Set, colored vinyl.

3) Main Theme from 'More' [10:25]
Town Hall, Birmingham, Feb. 11, 1970
It's a cryin' shame this wasn't played "more" often. some digital tinkering happened here to squeeze what could be squeezed out of this. I think it sounds better than the ususal versions, but it's still not great. The performance, however, is incredible. This infact may be nick mason's finest moment. flamboyant, yet always tasteful. [VG]
source: 'In Memoriam 1967-1981' Vinyl LP Box Set, colored vinyl.

4) Moonhead [7:39]
5) The Pict Rant [3:50]
Ernst-Merke Halle, Hamburg, Nov. 14, 1970
A rare complete performance of Moonhead (aka 'Corrosion'), followed by one of Roger's best and most, um, vigorous, 'Pict Rants'. This comes from a clone of the master tape, and sounds better than the 'Grooving With a Pict' RoIO of this show. [EX-]

6) Home Again [1:45]
7) Mortality [3:30]
The Dome, Brighton, Jan. 20, 1972
The only instrumental performance of 'Home Again' (aka 'Breathe reprise') along with the 'preacher tape' organ noodling. Dave shows off with the voxbox guitar thing. I like this version quite a bit. Mortality ends about a minute earlier than on the source tape, because a loud and noise kicks in, as their PA system started to fail. An editorial decision was made to remove this unpleasantness from this release. It's just a bit more of the same organ fluff and sound effects, so it's not like there is anything 'important' compromised. [EX]

8) Have a Cigar [5:07]
Knebworth Festival, UK, July 5, 1975
The last show of the 1975 tour, and the only live version with Roy Harper. After hearing this, you'll be grateful there's only one. Sound quality is not so hot, and the performance, is, well, tired. I'm sorry this turkey is in here, but hey. [VG-]

9) Pigs on the Wing pt.2 [3:39]
Olympic Stadium, Montreal, July 6, 1977
Roger shares some love with the audience. Later in the show he had more to share. This comes from a better source than 'Azimuth Coordinator', and one might be inclined to speculate that this is but a taste of things to come. Indeed. Nice solo from Snowy White. [EX+]

10) The Last Few Bricks pt.2 [8:16]
LA Arena, Los Angeles, Feb. 7, 1980
I could write a book on this 'song', but i won't. This is the last piece of new music from the 4-man lineup, the extra jam played on the first night of the Wall tour. It's a variation on an instrumental version of breathe (hmm, sound familiar?), was probably 'written' by dave gilmour, as he was the 'music director' for the shows, and i'll bet it was rehearsed once or twice. Often assumed to be a one-time improv jam to cover a lag in the stage show, it was infact played TWICE... [EX]

11) The Last Few Bricks pt.2 [3:16]
LA Arena, Los Angeles, Feb. 8, 1980
...and this is the other performance. It's a different arrangement, and about half as long as the night before. A true gem; performance-wise, I like this one better. but the sound quality is not as nice as the other. I didn't do the vinyl 'remastering' on this one, and there is too much noise reduction for my taste. [VG]

12) Celestial Voices [9:13]
Royal Albert Hall, June 26, 1969
The only live performance of this with a choir and orchestra. 9 minutes long, this whopper originates from a better source than what usually circulates of this show. [VG]

13) Brain Damage/Lunar Eclipse (RoIO Remix 2000) [5:30]
Studio and Guild Hall, Portsmouth Jan 21, 1972
How's THAT for a tacky title? This is a combination of three oddities: The quadraphonic mixdown of Brain Damage from "Works", the guitar solos shown in the studio excepts of the Live at Pompeii movie, and the first performance of "Eclipse" (the song) at Portsmouth. Except, that it ain't quite a song yet, as you will hear. My edits are basically passable, but this is in NO WAY to be considered a rare studio outtake. I (ME) made this, for your amusement only.

Plaz Notes:
This is the same broadcast source as used for the MegaDisc, Four Beat Sounds and Legendary Collectors' Series bootleg releases and may be the same recording. The differences are mainly in file splitting, but the LCS version has been compressed. I prefer this version as it was recorded continuously on long-playing digital audio tape (DAT) and has no cuts as exhibited in all of the bootlegs.

I have done some minor tinkering, though this was my second pass at this recording as I have seeded it previously. I have tidied up a few things, but it has not changed much. I was hoping to patch a one-second long series of static bursts at 8:20-21 of track 3, but all sources exhibit the same minor flaws, so it is probably a flaw on the master.

Post edits by plaz:
balanced: right channel -0.30 dB, plus local adjustments
repaired clicks, pops and static
gain normalized and retracked

From Calyx website:
Following Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth's decision to take a break, newcomer Steve Hillage is asked to lead an alternate line-up of the band, christened ParaGong, including veteran Didier
Malherbe, and other recent recruit Tim Blake; for a while, ex-Moving Gelatine Plates bassist Didier Thibault (who had been recommended by Gomelsky to replace Moze in Magma a few months
before) joins the band; setlist includes Kevin Ayers' "Why Are We Sleeping" and an early version of "I Never Glid Before". Much hiss (no dolby) but the music is worth it. No dates and venues, any more detail is welcome.
