Comments: This has appeared several times on Dime over the years through various releases, though it has been a few years since any of the iterations have appeared on the tracker. I figured it had been long enough that it would be worth another run through the tracker for those who missed it on the multiple postings 2007-2009. This particular release was shared by "Omme12345" in November 2010; many thanks to him for the effort of ripping it, scanning the artwork, and sharing it originally.

The "Bridges to Babylon" tour in 1997-98 took the Stones' money-making machine to another level, in terms of the scale of production, the number of tickets sold, and the number of cities visited. According to Wikipedia, they ended up playing 108 dates over a roughly one-year period to a total of 4,577,000 people in 25 countries. This, of course, would be exceeded in 2005-2007 with the "Bigger Bang" tour, but still it's a staggering level of touring for artists who were then in their late 50's. The album itself was so-so (the advance hype billed it as their "best album since Exile," continuing a trend that began with their first album after "Exile"), but did have three or four standout tracks which they replicated on their tour (I believe it also netted them a Grammy for "Has Anybody Seen My Baby?" -- which they immediately stopped playing live). The production itself was pretty good -- they had a massive stage set-up with a long platform that stretched to roughly halfway back at each venue; for those in the cheap ($200) seats, they played a mini-set in the middle of the venue before retreating back to the mainstage. Setlist-wise, they generally played to the masses with mostly greatest hits, but managed to squeeze in a few of their lesser-known tracks that were favored by the hardcore fans.

Rio has always been a high point for them -- they have typically drawn their largest audiences in this city (they drew 1.5 million for their free show in 2006), generally accompanied by a TV broadcast shortly after. This particular show was broadcast on free TV (I believe the commercials that were part of this original broadcast were edited out) and subsequently booted by many enterprising private manufacturers.

A unique component of this show was the appearance of Bob Dylan, who joined the band for a cover of "Like a Rolling Stone" which they had frequently played on this tour. Other highlights (for me, at least) were the combo of "Little Queenie" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You" performed in the relative intimacy of the B-stage. I find it a little surprising that given this high-profile show, Keith chose to play two relatively unknown songs in his mini-set -- generally you get either "Happy" or "Before They Make Me Run."

The audio sounds great; the video is serviceable -- it looks like this DVD was sourced by a VHS video that was a few generations down, so the resolution isn't perfect, colors bleed a little, and there are artifacts at the bottom of the screen. It takes a few seconds to get used to, and at that point it's fine for even a relatively casual collector.
