Comments: This recording captures the second-to-last date of David Gilmour's "Luck and Strange" tour, the 4th of 5 nights at New York's Madison Square Garden. I was a bit surprised that the over-the-top light and laser effects that characterized previous Pink Floyd/Gilmour tours was a bit muted this time, though I don't necessarily view it as a negative -- the more sparse use of visuals shifted the emphasis back to the music, and Gilmour's guitar work specifically.
On paper, this is not a great setlist -- prior to the tour, Gilmour indicated a desire to get away from the Pink Floyd music where Roger Waters was the driving creative force (including songs where DG sang lead but Waters was the principal songwriter), so there were only a handful of Waters-era songs in the set. The rest came from the last two PF (Gilmour-helmed) albums as well as his solo material. I did miss some of the vintage material, but the solo music was much stronger than I expected -- I really enjoyed the performance. His guitar virtuosity is equal to his prime 40 years ago; it's amazing to see how fluidly he plays after all of these years.
I got very lucky with the recording -- this might be the best-sounding arena show I've ever taped. The mix was fantastic, and I was directly in line with one of the overhead stacks. The usher initially placed us in the wrong seats, which led to 30 seconds of awkwardness when the rightful owners appeared 11 minutes in. This quickly resolved, however, and there is very little audience interference (you can hear a guy to my right talking a little during quiet moments) during the remainder of the first set. During the intermission, we claimed our actual seats in the front row of the section, and there is virtually no crowd interference in the second set. I couldn't be happier with the outcome.
Given that he is 78 years old, it is very likely that these MSG dates are the last shows Gilmour ever does. If so, he definitely went out on a high note.
