The Smiths recorded demos at Decibel Studios and Drone Studios in 1982, then signed to Rough Trade and recorded a couple of singles in Strawberry Studios. For the first album, Rough Trade hired Troy Tate to produce and recorded the album in Elephant Studios. Despite completing the album the band weren't happy with the sound and re-recorded the whole album again in London with John Porter behind the desk. 

A few official tracks of that first Troy Tate album have been released (specifically Pretty Girls Make Graves and Jeane), but most hasn't. On bootlegs, various mixes of these sessions have been released. It's never been clear what was due to be officially released. Stephane explains it much better than I could on PassionsJustLikeMine [1]. 

Soundsville Paul found an old cassette that he recorded from the masters a long time ago. It's a big improvement in sound quality and includes a couple of different versions. Originally seeded here [2] then a couple of tracks fixed here [3]. I've merged both torrents and removed Pretty Girls, since it's an official release.

Notes from PJLM (thanks!!!): 

This concert was one of the wildest of the tour. Security had the hardest time restraining fans who desperately wanted to make it on stage. The setlist remained almost unchanged in Laguna Hills, but "Reel Around The Fountain" and "Hand In Glove" were dropped. Actually it is not impossible that "Bigmouth Strikes Again" was dropped as well although it is listed here. It seems the Smiths might not have returned to perform a second encore, given what happened in the first one (read further for details). 

Morrissey wasn't very talkative throughout the evening. Besides introducing the lesser known "Panic, "Stretch Out And Wait" and "Is It Really So Strange?", he said "Thank you, you're very kind..." after "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out". Before "Never Had No One Ever", he asked "Any requests?". Titles were shouted from the audience, and to one or some of these he answered with a loud "No!". Before "The Queen Is Dead", other titles were shouted from the audience, and to one of these, Morrissey answered "We don't do that song anymore". In "The Queen Is Dead" he changed a line to "Life is very long, when you're handsome". 

After "Meat Is Murder", as the violence was increasing, Morrissey said "I hope that the security don't ruin your night too much, but I'm sure that they'll do their best... never mind, they're outnumbered..." When he returned to the stage for the first encore after the band-only instrumental "Money Changes Everything", seeing how the security manhandled some fans, Morrissey exclaimed "Oh, God!" while Johnny added "Neanderthals, fucking idiots, these guys!". Then one third into following song "I Know It's Over", Morrissey interrupted his singing to shout to a bouncer: "Jesus Christ! Don't be so stupid! Leave him alone, you stupid idiot! Leave him!" He then resumed the song as if nothing had happened. A completely stunning moment. 

A very good recording of this concert, probably from the soundboard, is being circulated on the official bootleg "Thank Your Lucky Stars", erroneously credited as being from the previous gig in Los Angeles. It is one of the best bootlegs for the Smiths, for content and sound quality. The whole concert is featured except for "Meat Is Murder" and, if it was actually performed, the final song "Bigmouth Strikes Again". 

Fanmade copies of "Thank Your Lucky Stars" have also been seen with different artwork, under the erroneous title "Live In Los Angeles". The cover for one of these shows the four band members standing, same photo shoot as the one that provided the cover for the bootleg "The Cradle Snatchers". The cover to another one subtitled "Live In Los Angeles '86" uses an early photo of the band with Morrissey holding a bouquet of flowers. 

In 2005 the tracks from "Thank Your Lucky Stars" were split over a bootleg LP and 2 bootleg 7"s. The LP, titled "Brighter Sides To Life" featured the songs "Still Ill", "I Want The One I Can"t Have", "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", "How Soon Is Now?", "Frankly, Mr. Shankly", "Panic", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", "The Queen Is Dead", "Money Changes Everything" and "I Know It"s Over". The 7" bootleg titled "Good Times" featured "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want", "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore", "Stretch Out And Wait" and "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" and the other bootleg 7", "Break My Spine", featured the remaining 4 songs, "Is It Really So Strange?", "Never Had No One Ever", "Cemetary Gates" and "What She Said/Rubber Ring". 

"Wilde About The Smiths", a factory pressed cd in digipack has "I Know It's Over" from this concert with many other live tracks, rarities and radio sessions.

"Not much to say about this show"?? This is what we always hope for when an audience recording from 28 years ago appears! Instead of hiss from multiple cassette generations on substandard tapes, recorded from the back row, here we have what appears to be a master from the taper's metal tape where all instruments are clearly audible and vocals are up front. The atmosphere is electric, the audience is totally involved but not a distraction. I was an instant fan of the Smiths upon first hearing their records on radio and that feeling is back today. I am so glad I found this and can share with all Smiths fans at Dime. These files are exactly as I downloaded them, no tampering. All I did was rename the folder and create md5 and ffp files.

This was the first hometown gig where the Smiths were headliners.
As the band came on stage Morrissey greeted the fans "Hello you little charmers... we're the Smiths, how d'you do?" then launched into "You've Got Everything Now". Throughout the show, in one song out of two (faster numbers), Morrissey - who still looked ill at ease on stage at the time - had something to shake in his right hand while with the left one he held the microphone. In "You've Got Everything Now" the bouquet of flowers Morrissey had carried on stage was shaken to the beat until there was nothing left, all the flowers and broken stems littering the stage. After this Morrissey simply said "So there!" and introduced the next song, "Handsome Devil!". For this one, the flowers in Morrissey's free hand were replaced by a tambourine.

The following song was introduced as "This is your new anthem if you but knew it, 'Reel Around The Fountain'... grab it!". The song was already becoming a favourite of the four that were broadcast on John Peel's programme, hence the comment. For "What Difference Does It Make?", Morrissey picked up the tambourine again. "Wonderful Woman" was gradually getting formed into the version that would eventually be released, but at this point in time Morrissey still sang "Ah answer me, what to be done with her?" instead of "I ask myself, what to be said of her?". During "These Things Take Time" Morrissey used maracas to occupy his free right hand.

The next track was dedicated to the Buzzcocks' ex-manager and head of the Manchester New Hormones label: "If nobody objects, a slight request... to everybody's favourite neighbour, Richard Boon... happy 312 Richard... 'I Don't Owe You Anything'." Then "Hand In Glove" (for which Morrissey used two maracas!) was incorrectly introduced as "Miserable Lie". After the song the mistake was corrected and Morrissey used the opportunity to throw a little sales pitch: "That wasn't 'Miserable Lie', it was 'Hand In Glove'... and if you bought 'Hand In Glove', why not buy it again?... This is 'Miserable Lie'."

The encore was introduced with the line "Accept yourself... if you can...". At some point into the song, while Johnny had his back turned, Morrissey pretended to hit him on the back of the head with the two maracas he was shaking. After the song, Morrissey simply shouted "Goodbye!", as he had done just before the pre-encore break, and the band left the stage.

This concert was professionally shot from various camera angles. The footage was at some point intended to be released on video by Factory Records. Plans fell through, but the footage has since made it into the hands of bootleggers. It can be found on VHS and DVD.

An audience recording of the whole set minus the first song is sold and traded under the title "Little Charmers". This has found its way onto file-sharing networks. However collectors might prefer an untitled audio transfer of the video recording because it sounds better and includes the whole set.

This is a highly degraded soundboard or broadcast recording. 
Heaven Know's I'm Miserable Now stops because someone apparently steals a piece of the band's equipment. It is returned and the song restarted.

This is about the best live video of The Smiths you will find. It is a pro-shot live gig for the German show Rockpalast. It's 1984, so there are no Queen Is Dead era songs, but it's still a fantastic track list.

Several versions of this gig have already been made available, but this is the complete unedited gig in the correct order without subtitles. It also includes backstage footage and a small introduction from Alan Bangs.

I promised I wouldn't disclose the source of this, hence the [undisclosed] in the lineage line above. The quality should speak for itself. The source is PAL and it has remained in PAL.

The picture had a flickering white line slightly outside of frame, so I cropped it very slightly then wrapped a simple DVD menu around the footage. In the process I accidentally converted the audio from AC3 256kbps to PCM 1536kbps which makes for bigger files but will not affect sound quality.

While this has become a popular bootleg over the years, and songs have been plucked from it several times for official releases, this is the first time this source has ever seen circulation. 

Broadcast and taped by me from the WLIR Tuesday Night concert series. The only information they gave that night was ‘recorded during the British tour, 1985, but thanks to the internet, I was able to establish the correct date and venue. 

According to the “Passions Just Like Mine” Smiths page, all known broadcasts feature an alternate “You’ve Got Everything Now” from a different, unknown date, even though the song was in the setlist this night, and was played in the order listed...I’ll go with the site for that info...He’s seems to have his info tight... 

Also according to the page, “How Soon is Now” is edited by 1 minute on all the broadcasts...though I don’t really hear it, I’ll go with the site on that as well... 

Aside from the unfortunate tape flip, and the first :30 secs of the tape where the DOLBY button was pushed in, the rest of the tape is pretty flawless. Perhaps it will be just another copy you have of this popular bootleg, perhaps it will upgrade an old copy, perhaps you’ve never heard it before...whatever the case may be...

This is from a 2nd gen tape. 

I got this tape from 'Big Al', who said he'd got it directly from someone who taped it. It was broadcast on Glasgow local Radio Clyde. Much better than I remembered it. Some slight FM signal drift in places, but otherwise excellent.

The Smiths headlined a benefit concert for members of Liverpool City Council, who were being taken to court for refusing to set the rates, as part of a protest against rate-capping. Slightly complicated - I've tried to explain it in the liner notes. The gig was organised by Tony Wilson, and New Order, The Fall and John Cooper Clarke were also on the bill - all for £6. It was the first proper gig by the Smiths after they recorded The Queen Is Dead (they had played a few songs at the Red Wedge gig in Newcastle just over a week earlier) and featured the first performances of There Is A Light... and Cemetry Gates. The version of Meat Is Murder has an extra verse/coda which I haven't heard on any other recordings. 

The source recording seems to be derived from a soundboard or pro-recording (it may be an audience recording, but I don't think so). I think the remaster makes quite a massive difference, putting this gig into the premier league of live Smiths recordings in circulation. I've also made use of audience recordings by Soundsville Steve and The Big Bopper, in particular because the main recording is missing a few seconds of audio in two places. I think I've done quite a good job of this, although you can tell.
