*** Beechwoods' Transfer Notes ***
Marbal kindly lent me a number of his tapes and reels, and this is the first new transfer from those. The master reel has deteriorated with time and is now lost, but Marbal's 1st generation ¼" reel and 1st generation cassette survive. After many comparisons and a number of reel transfers on different machines it was agreed that the cassette offered the best basis for a definitive release.

The tape was a 1980-82 vintage European Maxell UDXLII 'Type II' / High Bias cassette, and the tape inlay and label confirmed that Dolby Noise Reduction had been used at the time of recording. Playback azimuth was checked and aligned. A number of transfers were made using different settings of Dolby and Bias to determine the combination necessary to achieve a natural playback EQ. Playback with Dolby On and the cassette's Bias of 'Type II' 70µs EQ produced a very weak result. This is often the case when playing back a Dolby encoded recording on a different deck than the one that it was encoded with. Playback with Dolby Off resulted in an exaggerated level of hiss and a unusual EQ. Playing back with 'Type I' 120µs EQ, with Dolby On, was determined to be the best combination resulting in the most natural EQ.

Once these basics were established, a set of transfers at different levels were then done, to allow use of segments with optimal recording levels at different points (the original recording was very dynamic, with very high transients during crowd-noise, and at points during OoTD and the start of AHM).

Decided to follow up the '66 Johns Hopkins show with my favourite S&G concert. This was downloaded in FLAC from a hub and again the lineage is a bit sketchy, but it was definitely extracted from the Yellow Dog bootleg "Welcome In Holland" (catalog # YD 059/60). The recording clearly ran too slow -- though by no means as slow as the first copy of the concert I obtained, back in the '70's -- so I have speed-corrected it using Magix Audio Cleaning Lab 10 (the speed problems were inconsistent, so I worked on each track individually, making comparisons with many other shows, especially the Paris show from the same month; the original timings are indicated in brackets). I have not applied any noise reduction, although listeners who don't like any hiss might want to do so. Certainly a soundboard, though with some volume fluctuations here and there.

Wonderful rendition of "Bridge" with piano-only accompaniment -- FAR better than the Ohio '69 version with it's crappy thumpety-thump drumming....

Notes:
2 versions of this show are circulating. The first one, "Dragon Snake" probably comes from a raw transfert of a (x-generation ?) cassette. The second one, "Drums & Bass Show", is obviously remastered from the same source. Typicaly the kind of brutal remaster i can't stand : harsh equalisation removing all medium frequency, incredible noise reduction untill all hiss (and a lot of music) is definitively removed, compression to death untill all dynamics is reduced to zero. The resulting music sounds very unnatural to my ears, but it's of course a personal opinion.

Though, it's sure the "Dragon Snake" had to, and could be improved in a less destructive way, that's what i tried to do. Some mp3 snippets will let you hear the "before and after" comparison between "Dragon Snake" and this remaster. Some other ones will let you compare "Drums and Bass" with it. Listen to them, make your own opinion, and don't download this torrent if you think it is a bad or an non interesting job done. Otherwise, please trade it freely for non connected people. Please always join this text and the new artwork so people will clearly know that it is a modified (and possibly to-avoid) version, not the original one.

Thousand thanks to Markybhoy who uploaded the wonderful original "Dragon Snakes" from the silver discs on DIME, and to Shoestunes who uploaded the "Drum and Bass" version from where i took the bonus track d3t7 and added it to this torrent.

Notes
- Huge thanks to Hans Devente, who's finally finished transferring and sharing ALL of his XTC tapes. Hans taped a load of these tapes himself, and a large portion of them are audience captures. Thanks to Hans, no longer is XTC of the 70s nor Barry Andrews a rarity! Unfortunately, shortly after transferring the Chelmsford Odeon and Strans Lyceum tapes, his Nakamichi Dragon bit the dust. According to him it was far more than simple electrical failure, and it was given a seaman's burial in the waterway behind his house. Being the sport he is, he went out and got a replacement deck to finish up not only these but all the other tapes he has. The deck in question is a Sony TC-WR820, a two head deck and not as great as the Dragon, but certainly it works!

Nice sounding show from RLR collection. Browsing a bit I noted that the setlist was longer than this recording so I believe this is a kind of incomplete. The Velodromo Vigorelli was back in the 60's/70's/80's the venue for large crowds where artists such The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Toto, Santana had played before. It was basically a bike racetrack on open air which made the acoustic very nice and a quite "intimate" atmosphere. Unfortunately over the years the racetrack - made basically of wood, was quite deteriorated because of the weather. The very last show I saw at Vigorelli was somewhere 10 years ago, then it was shut down for renovation but I understand there are still issues about defining its exact usage (concerts? races? both?) so it is still closed.

The Clash were huge in Italy about that time but they were not as wild as in the 70's and the punk movement was starting to lose its driving force, and a few years later it was completely obscured by new wave and 80's disco.
