Copy (1979):
Akaii GX 570 D2 w/ Dolby, bias @ 70us > Revox B77 @ 7 1/2 ips on Maxell UD 35 90

Transfer (2014):
Revox B77 > Korg mr2000-s @ 1 bit, 5.6 MHz DSDIFF

AudioGate (24-96) > iZotope RX 4 Advanced and Adobe Audition 3.0 (clean up, track splits) > AudioGate Aqua (16-44) > TLH (flac level 8)
Song information embedded with Stamp ID3 tag editor

Clean up included masking loud claps, minimizing microphone handling noises and repairing stray ticks or pops. Sneezing, sniffing, coughing, whistling and talking were also reduced. Volume and balance adjusted as needed.

Let's say it's a much smoother ride for you now.
There is some random chatter although minimized best I could it still comes through in places They should have been drinking that coke.

Missed this show as I worked until 9:00 on Wednesdays and the show started at 8. It has been nice listening to this recording and I have it mostly memorized now. Time I share this with everyone else and let you take that ride back in time too.

Lineage (video):

*Original BBC4 DVB-S (30 min edit), January 11, 2007 =>SkyStar2/DVBViewer > VideoRedo > DVDLab > PLG torrent (thanks to joefish) =>TDA3 (cutting into 4 parts)> DGIndex (demuxing video) > Womble MVW (joining with other sources)

**archive videotape (unknown generation, time code close to top)>standalone DVD recorder>TDA2>Dime torrent #161251 (thanks to randall) > DGIndex>AviSynth (restoration of original frames with RePAL, FFT3D filter, hiding timecode and top/bottom lines)>CCE2.70 (CBR 8000kbps, progressive)

***analog BBC broadcast (retrospective compilation by Jools Holland) >VHS > DVD > Dime torrent #101561 ("Joni Mitchell + Co", thanks to Kotdd) => TDA > DGIndex > AviSynth (LeakKernelBob >VDub's DeLogo + FFT3D filter >Weave TFF) > CCE2.70(CBR 8500kbps, interlaced TFF)

Lineage (audio):

*DVB sourced DVD (details above)>DGIndex (demuxing of original stream - MP2, 256 kbps) > MAD (32-bit MPEG Audio Decoder > wav 48kHz 16 bit) > SoundForge8 (48kHz 64 bit > level adjustment > 64 to 16 bit, joining with other sources)

**/***archive videotape>(lossless transfer confirmed) trade CDR>EAC>FLAC frontend> Dime torrent #106758 (thanks again to randall!) => FLAC frontend (decompression, 44.1kHz 16bit) > SoundForge8 (44.1 kHz 64 bit > 44.1 to 48 kHz resampling> 64 to 16 bit> left channel duplicating)

Authoring:
Womble MVW for cut/join video streams + sync detection, SoundForge for seamlessly joining audio.
TDA3 for authoring from the resuting video and audio streams.

Notes:
on archive source (3 songs + intros) timecode is now perfectly hidden with BBC logo (no more jumping digits). On Woodstock** UK ARENA logo filtered out (no cropping, of course).
Audio for the above pieces taken from lossless CDR source also coming from video tape (15625 kHz TV line frequency trace on spectrogram, also it can't be from a broadcast - no cut-off until 22.05kHz, half of the audio CD sampling frequency 44.1). It is mono (as all sources are, judging by waveform in SoundForge) and inferior in quality to MP2 stream of the BBC DVB, for this reason it was not used for the rest of material. There was also some static, mainly in right channel, so audio from left channel was used for replacement.
I didn't use any material from the older BBC4 broadcast torrented as 'trade DVD source', it proved to be modified: opening it in VDubMod shows it was deinterlaced (=re-encoded). And the picture is not as sharp as in the DVB source used here.
..................
I tried different ways of editing material and making a DVD from those sources (cutting off time code with centering the rest, making different options for playback with and without duplicating DVB material, etc). All that worked but did not satisfy me, this version is the one I like.

Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock - 1978-09-03 - Berkeley, CA (FM/FLAC)

(FM broadcast FLAC)

Bread and Roses Festival
Greek Theater
Berkeley, Ca. U.S.A.
September 3, 1978
FM broadcast on "Folk Festival USA" program

Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock
(last song with Tom Paxton Odetta the Persuasions Todd Gibson and Hamilton Camp)

lineage:
probably WBUR 90.9 FM (or maybe WGBH 89.7) radio (NPR) > Sansui 8 reciever with wire FM antenna > unknown average quality cassette deck (dolby off) > TDK-SA 90 min. master cassette >
played on tascam 112 into soundforge (wav) > flac (sb's aligned)

01: furry sings the blues 5:07
02: the dry cleaner from Des Moines 3:40
03: introduction of Herbie Hancock :52
04: a chair in the sky 6:53
05: the wolf that lives in Lindsey 7:46
06: the circle game 5:12
07: radio credits 1:15

runtime: 30:45 (minutes/seconds)

a this and that, bread and butter production. it's earthy. nothing fancy. no band. no big Marshall amps. no eq or noise reduction or fidelity abusing. this recording has a few brief flaws,
either in the broadcast or probably in this master recording and a little light static here and there, but not too much. (and 35 years earth time.) this tape has only been played a couple of times so it is not very worn from use.

NOTES:
A very nice AUD from Temple University show in August of '74. (Once released as a vinyl boot called "Courting and Sparking in Pennsylvania".) This is the same "Miles Of Aisles" band (and some of the same banter, by the way, you'll notice). Recording is at least a B+, even by today's standards: very clear Joni vocals, little audience ditraction noise, full concert including (most of the) tune-ups in betwen songs. All instruments can be heard well. On the other hand. the stereo separation is not great, dynamic range is compressed a bit, expected for a show of this era. However, I generally hate AUDs, and I like this one, for what that's worth--very listenable, and a great period for Joni. I was only 7 in 1974, but I sure wish I'd seen one of these shows.

The Complete New Vic Theatre

Disc 1
Joni Mitchell-1974-04-22-New Victoria Theater, London, BBC TV--from Exellent sounding 1st. Gen Cassette--
Friends, here´s a beautiful & mostly exellent sounding rarity from Joni Mitchell,
recorded from TV by a friend in the mid 70´s!
Only a few portions with the the full band are slightly overrecorded,
but most songs are solo performances or have a only 1 or 2 band members playing with Joni
& so the overall sound is really great.
Since Joni plays some really rare songs live here, this show makes a nice addition to the
BBC 1970 audio & DVD uploads in summer.
Many thx to this great guys who shared these & other fabulous BBC Rebroadcasts!
I really hope that this 1974 broadcast also will be rebroadcasted in digital format soon!!

Disc 2

Joni Mitchell
New Victoria Theatre, London, England, 24 Apr 1974 -- tracks NOT broadcast on BBC2 TV

As mentioned on the comments page of "Spring Songs", this complements the audio of the BBC2 TV broadcast, which can still be found here http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-d....php?id=123403. My memory played me false when I said this was an audience tape -- clearly it isn't, and my guess is that this was also recorded by the BBC. The concert was simultaneously broadcast on BBC2 TV and BBC Radio 1 FM in stereo (no stereo TV broadcasts in those days!), and it seems likely that more of the concert was put out on the radio than on the TV (this often happened). There's what sounds like radio interference here and there (12 sec into "Just Like This Train", for example), so it's more likely that this went out on Radio 1 than that somebody nicked it from the BBC's archives. Unfortunately, like the other torrent, this is mono; either the taper didn't have the equipment for receiving in stereo or the signal was too weak -- we'll never know. There's always the possibility that a stereo recording of the whole lot will eventually turn up, which would be nice, but in the meantime at least we have an early 1974 Joni concert virtually complete in pretty decent to very decent quality.

01 Free Man in Paris
02 You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio
03 The Same Situation
04 Just Like This Train
05 Rainy Night House
06 Big Yellow Taxi
07 People's Parties
08 Blue
09 Help Me
10 The Last Time I Saw Richard
11 Twisted (23 sec snippet!)

--the source tape continued with three more songs, "For the Roses", "Both Sides Now" and "Raised On Robbery", but as these are all the better quality TV tape I haven't included them here.

with The L.A. Express:
Tom Scott, flute & saxes
Robben Ford, guitar
Roger Kellaway (NOT Larry Nash), keyboards
Max Benett, bass
