Heart - 1987-09-11 - Oklahoma City, OK (AUD/FLAC)

(Audience FLAC)

The Myriad

Recorded, transferred and upped by MJK5510 (November 2012)

Transfer(s): Audience Master > Marantz PMD430 & Nakamichi CR-5A (Azimuth Adjusted) see description > MacBook Pro > Audacity > Peak Pro XT (Volume Smoothing/Edit/Indexing) > xACT > FLAC

This is the first digital transfer of my master tape.

It's taken about 3 weeks to get this one properly transferred. There were some major issues at the start of taping this show that lasted through the first 2 songs or so that I have worked very hard to correct.

The tape jammed so I missed the first minute or so of the first song.
When I pulled the tape for transfer I discovered on playback some major wow and flutter throughout the first song and minor wow and flutter throughout the second song.

I did 2 separate transfers of the master tape, one using the deck I used to originally record the show which gave me the foundation and took care of any issues after the first song with the exception of Barracuda sounding a little off.

Second transfer was done using the Nak as I discovered that I could azimuth adjust and correct the bad sections of the tape with a lot of detailed work. So, I've spent a number of late nights playing back the first transfer to identify the bad segments and correcting those parts using the Nak to make manual adjustments to the master tape, then splicing those parts into the foundation tape to "rebuild" the fist song. Barracuda was also re-transferred using the Nak and spliced into the first transfer.

After it was completed I had spliced in 22 separate snippets to rebuild the song ranging from about 1.5 seconds to 44 seconds.

If originally the song was about 25% listenable I'd say now it is 95% listenable. It's not perfect as there is still a few small areas that neither deck would correct but they are very minor especially compared to where it was originally.

No problems in the rest of the show besides a small splice at the end of I Want You So Bad.

Comments:
Almost every version of this show I have seen is taken from a bootleg LP called "Secret Heart Illustrated". This appears to be taken from the same FM broadcast, however this CDR is not a dub of the LP, and it is more complete as a 12 minute plus version of "Sing Child" is on this recording.

This was broadcast over AXS on Sunday September 30th, 2012.

A few notes on the DVD:
I no longer have cable, so I had a friend set his DVR to get this for me. I went over his house last weekend, plugged my H2160MW9 in via SVIDEO and captured what I could. I did not realize his UVerse box was putting out a 4:3 letterbox picture until I got home and loaded it on my computer. He lives 3 hours away, so I cannot go back to tinker with the video output. This is a wonderful show so hopefully someone got a proper HD encode or at least a nice 16:9 SD version yet to come. In the meantime this is a relatively small download (2.3 gigs) and it looks and sounds great if you can put up with the black bars. Again, this is a 4:3 LETTERBOX WIDESCREEN DVD. Do not download if this bothers you! I also made a quick menu with direct song access.

notes
A rarity that seems to show up on deep trade lists but nowhere else. Liberated badass Heart boot. Now the Seattle show's sound is more of a rough FM recording. There was hardly any bottom to it so I remastered these tracks. Hot, hot show from an era alot of people slag off. "The Situation" from 1982's Private Audition is the greatest Heart song ever! Now the other tracks are in pristine soundboard sound. No need to touch these files. This thing cost me a chunk o' change so I hope this means something to someone out there.

Lineage (Tracks 101-210):
ALD/SBD > D8 (listen box--from the parking lot) > Somy M1 DAT > PC > CDR

Lineage (Track 211):
ALD or IEM > Sony M1 > Master > PC > CDR

Additional editing notes:
* Show was recorded out-of-phase; show was phase-corrected (to be "in-phase") via Cool Edit Pro (however, Track 211--the soundcheck--was in-phase to begin with)
* Re-tracked show by combining in Nero, splitting with CD Wave
* Combined soundcheck into a single track (source CDR had it split into 5 pieces)
* Decreased volume in Track 101 by -2dB (0:02-0:21 mark) using Nero's wave editor
* Removed 25 seconds of applause at beginning of Track 102 and faded-in with Nero's wave editor
* Applied fade-out to Track 112 and Track 210 with Nero's wave editor
* Applied fade-in to Track 201 with Nero's wave editor
* Removed many gaps present in Track 201 and Track 205 (bad burn to CDR source?)
* Fixed dropout in one channel in Track 207 (3:24 mark) by pasting from the other channel (using Audacity)

ALD (assisted listening device) soundboard recordings are usually knocked for their "thin" sound quality (high amount of treble, not enough bass), but I don't think that's a real issue here at all. As such, Jim's files have been unaltered for sound quality (i.e., no EQ performed)--if some of you prefer to have more bass in your ALD recordings, I'll let you do your own EQ work since it then becomes a matter of personal taste. As for me, I think the show sounds great, as-is.

Jim F. notes:
(regarding his ALD-SBD shows): "ALDs (fm-sbd) perfect captures in most or all cases..however somewhat lacking bass..more than regular fm..The best place to rec these shows was from the park lot..! the signal was the best there..!"

Comments: Recorded from the Mezzanine, right section, 4th row. The recording sounds nice. This was my first time seeing Heart in concert. The only issue was the drunk women a few seats to my left. Fortunately, you can't really hear them much on the recording, but they showed up five minutes after the show started, and then decided to get up and walk in front everybody in the row four more times during the show. The only time you can really hear this on the recording is during "Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters" when they insisted on apologizing to every person in the row. There are also a couple screams during "Alone". They then proceeded to take selfies with each other. Luckily there was someone sitting between me and them, so they didn't ruin the recording. I just wonder sometimes if people realize how annoying they are being. The show was good, but I was just wondering why a band with so much material felt the need to play five different cover songs. As this was my first Heart concert, there are a ton of other songs I would have loved to hear. Oh well, I did enjoy what they did play!

Notes by the trader/taper:
THE DATE:
To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time this show has been dated correctly. I spent the past year or so working with the Archives Dep't. at WSU to turn up specific information on this performance. The broadcast dates were determined through student newspaper clippings (the newsletter clips refer to the group as "Hart" & notes they are from Canada). Clearly, at this point they were a relatively "unknown band" from the Pacific Northwest.

Traders database erroneously has this show listed as ??/??/75, ??/??/76 & 1/1/76. It also says the show was "Possibly rebroadcast on MTV in 1981". I don't beleive this ever happened. I'm still working on the precise date the film was shot, but my best guess at this point is late February or March, 1976.

THE VENUE/"SECOND ENDING":
Again, the lions share of this information came from a very kind soul at WSU Archives. The Second Ending was filmed in the KWSU-TV studios and broadcast somewhat irregularly in the Pacific Northwest beginning in early 1976 and ran for at least 2 years. The director of the series Michael J. Costones would actively seek out local artists to showcase on the series.
The studio is very small and held between 50-75 people, mostly WSU students. On this date for the Heart performance, it is clear the majority of the crowd had never heard of the band and are visibly blown out. This is the best quality transfer I have been able to find of this show. If anyone has a 1st Gen VHS from the Master Reel, please share it with us.
