This was the Charlie Daniels' Volunteer Jam XIII. Lynyrd Skynyrd's first performance post plane crash. They wheel out Allen Collins and he speaks at the beginning of the show and again later on before they start "When You Got Good Friends". This performance was professionally filmed and can be seen on youtube. I spent a lot of time comparing the tape speed to the film and pitch adjusted each song to be in sync with the video, (or as damn near possible) I spent my whole afternoon working on this. I think you folks will enjoy this one. Freebird is strictly an instrumental at 15 minutes long. I know the quality isn't pristine, but it's still enjoyable.

opening for Jeff Beck and the Jan Hammer Group

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

Notes:
This is the last known recording of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band. The band would play only eight more shows before going down in the plane crash on October 20, 1977. This show has long been though to have been a soundboard recording, though the possibility exists that it is an audience recording. Nevertheless, the sound is quite good. There are two short gaps of silence in That Smell, and the first few seconds of Sweet Home Alabama are missing. The performance is amazing,

notes
During the downtime fromthe Coronavirus, I have been looking at all these shows, I have recorded and havent had time to mix. Was playing around with this one. I was able to record Ronnie/backup singers, keyboards, and Bass feeds. I time aligned the keyboard feed to the other two feed. Guitars are present but can at times be a little distant. There are times that Ronnie Van Zant will sing away from Mic (thus occassionaly backups take front of recording) but all in all it is a really good mix and one tht I am enjoying listening to. Please note that I was walking out of venue during freebird and thus the incomplete nature of the end. I was able to record 10 minutes of Freebird.

notes:
In my opinion, this is one of the best audience recordings of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band. We're talkin' about 1974! And there aren't many live shows circulating with the Pronounced and Second Helping lineup, with Ed King and Bob Burns... The band did an encore that night, Crossroads, surely one of the first times they played that song, that was recorded for the live album, One More From The Road.

Notes by the uploader/trader:
Lynyrd Skynyrd taped this brief live unplugged performance prior to the start of their 1993 tour at a club in Chattanooga, TN. I managed to capture this show onto cassette from another city about 2 hours away with several large mountains interfering with the reception. I was able to pull it off with very little static in the reception. The first 1:10 there is moderate static as my receiver was in the "FM Stereo" mode. I had to switch to "mono" for the noise to clear up so this show is in mono. The show sounds like it was a lot of fun for both the band members present and the audience. There is a lot of dialogue by the band just clowning around and by taking questions from the audience.

Info file says, "DVD from video shot by Bill Graham's in-house multi-camera black and white setup. Not great video quality,  but not too bad either. The soundboard audio is very decent quality with selectable Dolby Digital/AC3 or linear PCM audio. There are a few minor bad spots, especially at the beginning  of the show and please understand that the in-house black and white Winterland video setup left a bit to be desired even when captured off of a master tape. But that being said, I'm sure this will please any Lynyrd Skynyrd fan just fine!

Notes:
One of my all time favourite bands, from a soundboard recording, ripped from a recently acquired silver...

Free bird is also included in various copies in circulation, but is absent from "Saturday Night Special" and "Chatanooga Choo-Choo".

Lynyrd Skynyrd later became the house band at Funocchio’s bar on Atlanta’s Peachtree Street, and it was there that musician and producer Al Kooper noticed them. As a result, he produced their first record for an MCA label and performed with them.

From March 27-May 1, 1973, possibly while Mr. Martin was negotiating with the agent about getting them to Baylor, the band was at Studio One in Doraville, Ga., recording songs from its first album, “Pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd.” Tunes on the album included such now-familiar hits as “Tuesday’s Gone,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Simple Man,” and, of course, one of the classic songs in rock and roll history – “Free Bird.”

And sometime in June 1973 – just days after their Baylor appearance -- they recorded “Sweet Home Alabama,” which would be released about a year later and would be the band’s first hit single.

“Free Bird,” the band’s first song to be played on the airwaves, was actually a few weeks from being released as well along with the other songs on the first album.

Within a couple of years, the band would become one of the most popular rock bands in the United States, particularly in the South. As evidence, a show they did at Chattanooga’s Memorial Auditorium on March 19, 1975, was sold out.

They were scheduled to perform again at Memorial Auditorium in late October 1977, but on Oct. 20, a plane crash in Mississippi during a concert tour killed three bandmembers, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, and several others. As a result, the group disbanded for several years before reuniting.
