The original audience master cassette was recorded on a Sony TC124 with unknown Sony dynamic mics, spread approx. 25-30 ft. across the balcony, by Ken & Judy Lee. The cassette was baked, processed and transfered via Tascam 122 MK-III > Lucid ADA1000 > Tascam CDRW 700 (CDR) by John Jay Hance in 2004. Further editing and tracking performed by Peter G with Soundforge. Audio extraction via Peak 3.2.1 on a G4 Titanium Powerbook, compressed with xACT V1.2 (flac level 6), and seeded by BoldCaptain via BitTorrent 3.2.2a. Extra thanks to Dave T. for the help with the setlist. 

Notes: Another outstanding offering from Ken and Judy Lee, this time a triple bill. McKendree Spring, Livingston Taylor, and Jethro Tull. while I was familiar with the last two, McKendree Spring was unknown to me. A web search revealed quite a bit of info. For those as unfamiliar as I was , Fran McKendree fronted this progressive band from the mid to late 60's into the 70''s. He is still very active in the music scene, both as a musician and a producer. The sound of McKendree Spring is quite different, mixing a psychedelic sound with a progressive edge employing violins, horns and moog synthesizers. I wish there was more of this here, but as an opening act his time on stage was limited. I''m sure you will like it, and probably want more as well. As the tape begins abruptly, we think that Ken himself may have been sitting the set out, and upon hearing the unique sound that McKendree has, decided to turn on the deck mid song, possibly mid-set, and we are grateful that he did. Livingston Taylor, brother of the more famous James Taylor, presents the same kind of acoustic music as his brother and often his voice sounds more like James than James does. It also gave us a bit of a mystery as well, and we are still unsure of whether this set is early, or early and late. It has a tape flip in the middle, and would appear to be otherwise complete, but seems rather lenthy for a mid act. Hopefully the complete late show will surface and shed a little more light on this in the future and solve the riddle. Jethro Tull already a prominent figure in the British rock scene, combining elements of classical music and progressive art rock together, gives a solid performance. And as seems to be the Capitol Theater trademark, is more free-form than other sets from this period, expanding on themes, soloing not only on flute, but giving the guitarist and drummer their space as well. Very nice, early song list, a must have for any fan of his. Rumor has it that during this set Ken was offered a large sum of money for the masters, but true to his word he turned it down. Again, these sets have not seen the light of day for thirty-some odd years, and while time may have taken a toll on the master tape, the sound is absolutely astounding. And this is only the early show...

'The * disc is a soundboard that claims to be from the evening following the Memphis gig at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama on July 29th. This is a previously undocumented and unreleased tape. There is no mention of the state, city, venue or date but it seems to be genuine. It has a beginning very similar to the July 20th Long Beach soundboard with the introduction and Clapton saying "Legs Al!...If we're all sitting comfortably we'll begin" before "Smile". Long Beach was used for a bogus July 30th New Orleans release on cdr, but the difference is that Clapton says "Legs Al" once instead of twice and doesn't say "oops a daisy" as he does in Long Beach. After doing a comparison with all of the known set lists from 1974 this is doesn't match any. WGPSEC (who this is I do not know) also can confirm this is, as far as he can tell, an unique tape so we can take this as face value.

The Alabama tape is very similar in tone to the other two in this collection, probably why they are all grouped together. It sounds like a high generation tape with some hiss present and overall sounding a bit dull. There is a cut before "I Shot The Sheriff" and a small one in "Tell The Truth". And also like the other two there are no encores present. The acoustic beginning is very short with fast versions of "Smile" and "Let It Grow". It sounds like Clapton is impatient and wants to go electric early. "This one's for Donner and Galadriel" he says before "Layla". "Willie And The Hand Jive" is paired with "Get Ready" as usual on this tour but the definite highlight of the set is "Tell The Truth". Clapton's jams are very inventive and he ends the song by playing The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood". "Let It Rain" is the set closer for only the second known time on this tour. It is a tape that will interest Clapton collectors because it is new and authentic and for that reason Three Smiles is worth having.'

JEMS is happy to return to our Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone series, presenting recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin in and around LA circa 1975-77. For further details on how other tapes in this series came to be lost and found again, as well as JEMS' history with Mike Millard, please refer to the notes in Vol.

This is one of four previously unknown, unattributed and probably uncirculated Millard recordings (the other three were Bruce Springsteen shows from 1988 and 1990) provided to JEMS by BC, longtime friend of Mike the MIC who attended dozens of concerts with him over the years. 

It captures the third and final night of the Eagles’ Thank You Los Angeles concerts. Some performances from the shows were used on EAGLES LIVE, the double album released later that same year, albeit with a lot of overdubs and studio tweaking. It’s also the second to last show that band would play until reuniting in 1994 (the final show on the Long Run tour was Long Beach Arena on the 31st).

We presume Millard used the same gear as he did the previous year recording Bob Dylan at the same venue, and while the results aren’t quite up to that incredible standard, it is another typically impressive Millard capture, full, clear and mostly away from audience noise. Santa Monica Civic was something of a home court for Millard: he certainly knew how to get impressive results there.

While I would not characterize myself as a big Eagles fan, every time I hear a live recording from this era, I’m impressed not only by how beautifully they play but how charming they are on stage. They are a much better live band than I ever gave them credit for. 

As luck would have it, this same show was also recorded by John, Mark (the B-Man) and Mike, and posted by our pal Flying M Productions about six years ago from his own master tapes. Flying M’s post is the complete show; unfortunately the second of BC’s tapes has been lost, so we only have part one, the 100-minute cassette that Millard personally dubbed for him (and labeled in his signature style, which you’ll see in the artwork and the full cassette index label in the commments).

JEMS thanks BC for reaching out and not only loaning us his Millard first generation cassettes, but for sharing stories and helping fill in some gaps in the story of this legendary taper. BC says that the Mike Millard he knew would have loved the sharing community and the continuing interest in his work. Thanks as well to mjk5510, who helped make the connection to BC and, as usual, handled the last mile.

This boot was located in a closeout bin on the sidewalk in Tokyo six years ago. Can't quite locate the artwork at this time, maybe someone else can come through with this. The lyrical interlude in "Game" is especially good.
