09 - Santa Ana

Live January 6, 1974 Cambridge, Massachusetts
10 - Zero And Blind Terry

This is the same source used for Wolfgang's Vault. I compared the sound to my "Live at Max's Kansas City" and although that version is top notch and I've enjoyed it for years, this one is a notch or 2 better. The levels are a little higher, so having this one would be definitely be an upgrade. I've left the sound untouched, so this is the exact Lossless copy of the master reel. You'll notice that on "Songs For the Orphans" there's actually a little bit more music and it fades out instead of abruptly cutting off. Also at the end of Thundcrack the audience applause runs longer. I'm sure you'll hear other subtle differences as you get familiar with this new upgrade. The bonus tracks are also coming from a master reel that was sent out as a promotional item to radio stations. The date is unknown, but those songs Santa Ana and Zero and Blind Terry are circa 1972-1973. These may or may not have been released on other circulating boots. Anyone who has lots of time on their hands may want to research this.

notes:
The main thing to note is that this set sorts out the mess that the bootleggers have made of the PA tracks. None of the annotations of the PA sources are accurate, and indeed none of them are even complete. I refer to "Before and After the Flood‟, "Bittersweet", "Paint the Daytime Black", Poet and the Players" etc. The quality of these tracks is better than any of the bootlegs as well (imho), as they are not derived from bootlegs.

Tangerine Dream - 1980-01-31 - Berlin, DE (DVDfull pro-shot)

(DVDfull pro-shot)

Tangerine Dream - Live from the Berlin Wall, East Berlin Palast der Republik, GDR 1980-01-31 First Time Ever 5.1 Surround-Sound Matrix NTSC DVD with added visualizations - A Doinker/MOB/TheTooleMan Consipiracy - Awe-inspiring - Don't blame us if you see God or Allah while watching it!

It's all true, too... this DVD has the quality of something you'd go out and buy. It's also optimized 16:9 for wide-screen televisions.

Before we get started - this is the as-yet unreleased portion of this evening. For the rest of the show, try the commercial release "Pergammon". Please support Tangerine Dream!

For years it has been known that there have been two versions of this show: a 1:1 transfer from the now-lost soundboard tape, and the FM broadcast. The soundboard version has been available through the Tangerine Tree for years, but the FM cast is much more widely known from the great German vinyl bootleg 'Staatsgrenze West'.

I have three copies of the vinyl, including the ultra-rare numbered first edition on red vinyl. There was a funny thing about it - the soloing instruments were very loud, especially during the great jam opening the second side, but nothing else was audible. I only received the soundboard version a couple of years ago, only to get my hopes dashed for a better mix. Oh, there are other instruments in there all right, but the soloing instruments exist only as faded echoes and the TT version runs too fast. The sound quality of both sources was very close. Quizically, both versions are in fully-separated stereo, meaning that the original setup must have been quadraphonic.

Hence an idea was born: to combine the two versions and to make a 5.1 surround-sound mix. To make this happen, I sent fresh transfers from the red-vinyl edition of 'Staatsgrenze West' to audio restoration whiz MOB, where he speed-corrected the TT source and was able to totally synchronize the sound with the vinyl version. The restored four-channel was then passed to TheTooleMan for 5.1 audio DVDr authoring.

To my total surprise, TheTooleMan figured out a way to add visuals to the audio that synch with the music. Some of them are WMP-like, many of them are not. It's simply a mind-blowing experience to watch. I've attached a contact sheet in the comments section, please check it out.

Even if you don't like or have never heard of Tangerine Dream, this show is a great place to start.

Notes:
This show sounds to goodto be true. Most sites have it as audience. My ears may be worn down, but it sure as heck sounds like soundboard to me. Some tracks end, then absolutely no noise or sound for a few seconds, then on to the next track. Vocals and music are very clear. Some noise in track 103 at 4:20 and at end of track 202 into start of track 203.

NOTES:
The "Come Together: Jon Bon Jovi & Friends" benefit concert was organized by the Long Branch Police Department, The Asbury Park Press, and FPI Concerts, along with Jon Bon Jovi. The concert was to honor slain Long Branch police officer Sgt. Patrick King and raise money for the Sgt. Patrick King Memorial Fund to provide for his family.
King, 45-year-old father of two young boys, was fatally shot on 20 Nov 1997 by a fugitive who had vowed to kill himself and a police officer rather than be captured and returned to jail.

20 musicians with ties to the Jersey shore music scene answered Jon Bon Jovi's call, including Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa and several members of the then-disbanded E Street Band (Clarence Clemons, Danni Frederici, Patti Scialfa, Little Steven, and Max Weinberg), Southside Johnny, Bobby Bandiera, and Richie Sambora among others.
Actor Danny DeVito was the event's MC.

This was a near-reunion of the fabled E Street Band and Bruce's first full-length electric gig following the acoustic: The Ghost Of Tom Joad Solo Acoustic Tour. Springsteen spent much of (or maybe all) the night onstage, singing or playing guitar only.

Comments: (FLOM)
U2 makes quite a good show in Sao Paulo. Bono talks a lot to the audience, mostly in Portuguese. The CDs comes in very very nice packaging; a double digipack with "flipout" cover. There are some mistakes in the indexing, though. On Disc 1, "Pop Muzik" and "Mofo" are listed as separate tracks, but they are indexed together as Track 1. "Last night on earth" and "Where The Streets Have No Name" are also erroneously indexed as two tracks each. On Disc 2, Track 3 is listed as "Encore One: Lemon Perfecto Mix (1997 edit)," but this track has for some reason been cut from the recording. Also, the outtro from "40," is listed as INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart," but it is not present here. Still, the CDs are a very good buy, with stunning packaging and excellent sound. If you are looking for an ABSOLUTELY complete PopMart show, then this might not be for you.
