Notes:
This recording found it's way to me from a long time buddy/collector via a portable HD. The HD contains a good 50-75 shows from Wolf Trap from about 2010 - 2013 I have found NONE of these to be in circulation, nor have I found many to have been recorded via any other source. So I would regard these as very unique.

I can conclude that almost all of these recordings (if not all) were recorded via ALD. They are all Mono, and many of the recordings have various stages of Clipping. It's not clear if the clipping is only in the copies I received or are on the original files (which I had no access to) Without overly enhancing or destroying the recordings, I have done the best I could to master them and put them out. I would welcome any input on the history of these recordings or anything else that someone could enlighten me on their origin.

Additional Notes:
Encores appear to be missing (Mercury Blues, I Am A Patriot), and not recorded. Overall a fairly solid recording, although there is some very slight 60MHZ ground hum. I opted not to try to remove this in order to keep more of the integrity of the recording. It is very, very slight, and doesn't seem to impede the listening. This is divided into a 3 CD set... again, alternate CD split tracks have been included.

This was another trade DAT that I received back in the mid 90s, from Jason Sherrett, a fellow DAT taper from Portland, OR. Jason was meticulous with recording details, and he marked my DAT ‘Clone #4’. The quality on this is really good, and will fit on one disc for those of us who still use CDs. :)

Note:
I mastered the recording on my friend's rather upmarket equipment. Alas, neither of us remembers makes and builds ... definitely, tuner/amp NOT receiver unit!

* Rec. info (track 12): On 82/8/28, I stopped the recording during Your Old Lady in order to save blank tape. Here, track12 has been inserted from an altern. WDR tv rebrdcast (00/94). Usually, the original 'Rockpalast' tv live brdcast as well as the rebrdcast used here as a source for track 12 are the 2 sources for videos and audios of the Lindley set in general circulation. I find, both tend to show an audibly inf. stereo or even mono mix/signal. Lineage for track12 only: vidM > my C0 (Maxell XLII).

David Lindley and his band are also flying in from Los Angeles just for their appearance at the Rockpalast Open Air Festival at the Loreley. It will be David Lindley's only appearance in Europe this year. Lindley is an American and has been on the road under his own name for a little more than a year: Nevertheless, at least for the people on the American west coast that know their music, he has been well- known for a while, particularly because of his long-time work as a guitarist for Jackson Browne. On top of that, he's played with almost everyone: Crosby and Nash, Linda Ronstadt and Ry Cooder are only three names.

David Lindley's career can be divided into four parts: As a fourteen-year old, he began to acquire knowledge of the guitar by copying rock'n'roll singles. In the early '60s, he changed over to acoustic folk music and played in cafes and bars. Around 1965, he formed the cult band 'Kaleidoscope' , with which he wanted to create a "musical synthesis of all music styles". The next step was working together with Jackson Browne, whose records and concerts wouldn't be so well-known without the unique sound of David Lindley's electric steel guitar.

The last station for David Lindley, until now, is his own band, with whom he also appeared to an enthusiastic audience in November, 1981, at the Rockpalast Concert in the Metropol in Berlin. In an almost two-hour long concert, Lindley presents the whole range of his musical abilities: As a guitarist, as a steel-guitarist, as a violinist, with the mandolin guitar and the Hawaiian ukulele, and, of course, as a singer.

The musicians of his band give him optimum support, as singers as well as with their instruments. A cut from this concert, the 'Mercury Blues', caused a great sensation at the 10th Rockpalast Festival: On the one hand, everyone was very impressed with the abilities of this band, and on the other, it was twice as sad that during the second attempt, the high tech messed up the enjoyment of the whole number.

That will surely not happen on August 28th. "David Lindley became a term in all of Europe with his appearance at the Rockpalast. Later, he was able to play in sold-out concert halls. A full-blooded musician who was also able to put 17,000 fans under his spell, with his acoustic pieces."

Notes
"This is an FM broadcast on Pittsburgh radio station WDVE.  I taped it way back when and wore it out in my car's 8-track player.  In the early 90's, my business advertised on the station; the sales rep asked if he could get me anything.  I said "sure... have someone dig thru the vaults and find this show."  He got me a nice cassette copy which I had converted to CD... did a few trades/trees over the years.  Nice to see it make it here.

I'm a big JT and Jackson Browne fan.  Lindley joined JT's "usual" group of musicians for this tour in the summer of 76.
His versatility adds so much to the song arrangements. The violin on Riding on a Railroad and banjo on Carolina In My Mind are two great examples.  I love the lap guitar on Honey Don't Leave L.A.--Lindley and Sanborn's sax are incredible.
This is the best live version of Fire and Rain I've heard as Lindley makes his lap guitar sound more like a pedal steel.

After this tour, JT's musicians (Kunkle, Kootch and Sklar) joined Jackson Browne, Lindley and a couple of others for the tour which produced the Running On Empty LP.

Lostbrook notes:
A friend of mine emailed me his list of upcoming shows and didn't notice that he had purchased tickets for two concerts on the same night - this one, and The Doobie Brothers. When I pointed this out to him, he chose the Doobies and I got a free pair of tickets for David Lindley. I knew little about him other than by reputation, so this gig was a learning experience for me. It was a great show, full of intoxicating lap steel guitar and other exotic instruments. Of course the most exotic thing on stage by far was Mr. Dave himself, who - as mentioned in a story between songs - just might have flown in from Mars.

Ethiessen1's notes:
Like most folks, the first time I heard David Lindley play was with Jackson Browne as a sideman on the For Everyman and Late For The Sky albums. The first time I saw him play was October 23, 1976 at William & Mary Hall, at the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, VA as he was an intregal part of Jackson's band on The Pretender tour-and he, along with the rest of the band, performed such stellar playing that the live Running On Empty album grew out of those shows. David has also played with many other folk rock oriented acts, most notably Linda Ronstadt, Crosby/Nash and the late Warren Zevon, and started his own band, El Rayo-X in 1981. Since 1979, Lindley has played off and on with Ry Cooder and for 6 years in the 1990s, he toured and played "permanent jam sessions" with Jordanian born percussionist Hani Naser. There are great similarities between Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder and Lindley (or Mr Dave as he seems to prefer), not only in terms of their excellent string driven musicianship and also in terms of the often humorous stories they tell as they tune between songs. Lindley takes things a step further and brings his rather twisted sense of humor into the songs themselves. An example would be his updating of K. C. Douglas and Robert Geddins' 1948 Mercury Blues, which originally referred to only Mercury automobiles, to now include the mercury found in tunafish and the pallid grey color your skin would get if you ingested any of the element. His Meatgrinder Blues, a song co-written with his daughter Rosanne, describes a person who basically grinds themselves through a meat grinder-a scene one might see on some late night horror movie, or in a Robert

OldNeumanntapr Notes-
This was another recording that I got from Ulrich in Germany. It took me several hours to try and clean this one up. There were all kinds of tracking problems with the original indexes. Someone had duplicated ‘Cumberland Gap’ as the last song of the first disc plus the first song of the second disc, but one of them was six seconds longer. The other had a fade in, so I had to do some cutting and pasting in Audacity. There was weird indexing of stage banter. For instance, there was nine seconds of basically dead air indexed separately. Plus, there was two tracks of consecutive dialog that should have shared the same index. Also, there were a few songs that were grouped together. ’The Johnson Boys’ and ‘The Little Red Lark’ were indexed together, as well as ‘Mercury Smell’ and ’You Done Me Wrong’, and ’Spodie’ and ‘Rag Bag’. I combined all the tracks in Audacity to a single-tack file using the ‘Find Zero Crossings’, then amplified and re-tracked, and also edited out the tape flips from the original cassette master. I also fixed the SBEs in Audacity after tagging the files. I think this recording is a lot more enjoyable now. Mr. Dave was quite talkative and told some funny stories. His playing is always amazing.
