These shows are very interesting and contain many different arangements from what would be put down on record. This is the complete show in the correct running order.
As I'm the person responsible for taping this show I thought I might as well add a few things.
Firstly - thanks for uploading Mark, I've been meaning to do these Marillion shows for a while myself but never seem to be able to find the time.
As Mark said this and all the other recordings that he will be uploading were recorded by me with permission from the band. They were all done on a Marantz Superscope 330 cassette deck using a single point stereo Sony condenser mic and TDK-SA tapes. This is the same equipment I used to tape several Genesis gigs at the time including the Master of the Marquee show which has been upped here on Dime several times. Copies were given to the band via Tim Hollings who used to produce The Web newsletter. Tim also acted as the band's archivist, taking over from Guy Hewison when Guy left to manage Solstice. It was him that held the live recordings, so any copies of these shows held by the band would have come from him and would by then, I assume, be second gen. They used to tape a lot of the shows at the time but in many cases after listening back to their performance the following day they would erase it and use the tape to record the next gig - money was pretty tight for them at the time! Those that did survive only did so as Tim took copies for himself before re-using the tape. There is some rumour that those recordings were from the board but in fact they were done on Tim's Aiwa cassette using two mics set up by the desk. Some early gigs were done from the board but were too unbalanced to be of much use.
As Mark said I still have the masters for the gigs I taped and a couple of years ago gave him copies of each show on CD-R , transferred by myself. There is no additional cassette generation involved - master cassette>Cool Edit for some minor volume adjustments, fade ins, fade outs etc but no EQ or NR>CD-R
This was a bit of a strange gig. Although the band were starting to build a following in the Home Counties and London, thanks to the regular Marquee and Friars gigs, they were pretty much unknown in the rest of the country apart from maybe in Scotland where they toured in early 82. The gig at the Sheffield Limit Club was one early attempt at venturing into the North of England. If I remember correctly there was a very low turnout, certainly less than 100 people. Half of them were there to see the band and half stood at the bar at the back talking. You can hear Fish giving them some flack on a few occasions. They moved the set around, putting some more uptempo things at the beginning to try and win over those at the back but when that didn't work they just played to the few at the front that were interested and gave in to calls for Grendel which at the time was never played live other than at the Marquee and Friars. A few months later they returned to the same venue but by then they had signed to EMI and there was a buzz about them in the press, so the place was packed.
There's only one song from the soundcheck, I really can't remember why I didn't tape it all but there's a priceless moment where Fish gets annoyed with the in-house lights man who didn't seem to be getting to grips with his job.
