This is the earliest known recorded FREE live performance ever. On July 15th 1968, even before they recorded "Tons of Sobs" (October 1968), FREE did a session / audition for BBC radio. In the end, the result seemed to be ok for BBC and so it got broadcast a few days later on Top Gear with John Peel. The band recorded four songs, but "Waiting on You" has been released officially, so I had to omit it. Most of you would know it anyway. But these remaining three tracks have not been around too much I think, so here they are. Free Me stands out the most, if not only for it being an early version of the song, much faster and with a different arrangement.

Being put up again now in March, 2015 to mark the passing of the great Andy Fraser, a big inspiration to me as a then budding bassist during Free's heyday. I chose this show because it's a bit different from the Santa Monica show from about a month earlier. This show heavily leans on the Highway album, which remains my alltime favorite Free release. This show also includes the great Heavy Load from Fire and Water, and both My Brother Jake and Soon I Will be Gone, which were the 2 studio tracks that made it on to the Free Live album in the US. A few of these tracks feature Andy on piano, which he seemed to be getting more interested in at this point, even though he was such an outstanding bassist for that pre-Jaco and Stanley bass world.

This great sounding radio show comes from a well packaged boot entitled "Radio Free". It also contained four BBC tracks as outtakes, but I have chosen not to include them, as at least one is officially released, and the other three may be studio outtakes instead of BBC stuff. You obviously can't trust anything you read on a boot as gospel. These guys even went to the extent of having the disc look like the pink Island label, with the customary bootleg "Not for sale - radio broadcast only" on the disc.
