My first generation copy is on a reel and my deck needs repair so this is sourced from B-Man's first generation cassette copy.

I reviewed these 2 discs and there were some minor issues that needed to be cleaned up.
Audacity was used to combine all tracks into one.

The late show was recorded by John and I.

There are occasional audio disturbances during both sets that I believe came from adjusting the recording levels (with dirty sliding type potentiometers).
"Living in this World" is slightly damaged by this (or something else).

denoise settings: Hannin-Periodic, -8 dB, attack 10 ms, release 100 ms

I got this in a trade in the 1990s but more than that I cannot remember. The quality is pretty good so it could be from a radio broadcast or a very good and low generation audience recording. The quality is so good I am going to keep this in 24/96. And share it before it gets stored on a separate hard disk, of course, since apparently this show has not been on Dime before. Randy mentions their "friends from KLSX" but not in a way that I can be sure that this is a radio broadcast from that station. 

There was a fair deal of tape hiss on this but after checking several settings in several parts of the recording not to harm the music. Between the songs, when only a few people are talking, it sounds like the tape is a bit wobbly. I checked and it is already there before denoising, so that is not a side-effect of the denoising process. 

I got the feeling the tape was running a bit slow. Then I copied Mr. Skin and Animal Zoo from the studio album to compare and found out that they played Mr. Skin a tiny bit faster than the original version and Animal Zoo somewhat slower than the studio version. I cannot hear whether the pitch on the second half of the tape side is off so I decided to keep it this way until someone can tell for certain that the speeds needs adjustment and actually do it. ;) Until then, I will enjoy this recording as it is! 

Randy mentions they would play some songs they don't usually play. That is also what makes this a great show. He mentions The Blues might get a different title but I don't know whether that has actually happened, and I am not sure about the title of that last track, Space Jam. Any corrections are welcome.

The appearance of the legendary rock group, Spirit, with guitarist Randy California and drummer Ed Cassidy at the Rockpalast-Festival on March 4th and 5th will be a notable event: is it the group's first concert in Europe after several years. For over ten years, the American group Spirit has been commonly recognized, on the whole, as one of the most influential and important rock groups. Their album 'Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus' is a rock classic. Formed in 1967, Spirit today represents the development of the music of the American west coast in all it's aspects. (Official Text)

Spirit. They made a name for themselves on this "Magic Night". Ed Cassidy's intro on his drums. Rockpalast jam.... electro jam....Randy California, with the sound of his magic guitar (supposedly bought at a department store for $50) , attracted everyone into his path. A high point was the drum solo - Ed drummed with his hands. Production leader Willi Lang couldn't take it anymore with 'Hey Joe' and danced with Randy in front of the camera. The ending was a session with Dickey Betts. A jewel in the Rockpalast history.

Spirit was formed by Randy California in L.A. in 1967. Randy had a group called 'Red Roosters' before, in which his bald-headed step-father, jazz drummer Ed Cassidy, already belonged to. In New York, they played for a short time with 'Jimi James and the Blue Flames'.The man behind this band was no other than Jimi Hendrix. The big Jimi Hendrix influence can always be seen in Randy's guitar playing. Jay Ferguson and Jon Locke played with Spirit for a few years. The fact that their albums never were commercial successes lay presumably on the stylistic jumps and strange fusions. The first LP was inspired more by jazz. The LP 'The family that plays together' offered more compact songs, of which the single 'I got a line on you' managed to land in the Charts and even made it to Nr. 25. Because of it's 'political' content, their song '1984', named after George Orwell, was boycotted by the radio stations in the USA. In 1971, there was a line-up change, and, the end of Spirit seemed to have arrived when Randy California left the band. He devoted himself to his solo project 'Kaptain Kopter and his Fabulous Twirly Birds'.

In 1976, Spirit heralded itself again with the ablum 'Spirit of 76', a somewhat controversial sounc collage. Since 1978, Spirit has appeared mostly as a trio, just as at the Rockpalast concert. Randy California produced some solo records. Spirit regularly made records and went on tours to go along with most of them. In 1984, with the original band members, Spirit released the LP 'The Thirteenth Dream'. In 1989, Randy California toured with the 'Night of Guitars'.
In 1996, the record 'California Blues' appeared, with guest musicians such as Robbie Krieger, Matt Andes and his daughter Rachel, more or less the third generation of Spirit. The record was to be a new beginning and a start in Spirit's fourth decade, but the unexpected death of Randy Craig Wolfe (California) brought Spirit a bitter end. Randy California died on 2 January, 1997, while trying to rescue his son from drowning (swimming in Molokai, Hawaii); he himself was pulled out to sea and drowned. Once again, a Rockpalast concert has become a document and a piece in the history of rock music.

I was at this show. It was a very cold day, and I was underage at the time. But, somehow, I just knew I would get lucky, somehow.. I didn't know how, but I wasn't going to miss a chance. In prep., I got there about two hours before the show. I rolled two big doobies, and smoked one as I walked from the bus stop to The Cabooze. By the time I go to the door, I was seriously lit up on the smoke. The bouncer refused to let me in, yet I wasn't going to give up that easy. I slid myself to the side door, straighted my look, and walked right in. It was there that I bumped into Ed Cassidy. I gave him a stoned smile and said I was "sorry for sneaking in, but I am too young, but I love you guys!" Ed returned the grin and told me, "I did the same thing in the jazz clubs when I was your age. I am happy to see someone as so happy to see us. Follow me!" Ed then went up to some of the staff, whispered something in their ears, and nodded. "You are all set. Nothing to worry about!"

I gave him a hug and started on my way to find a stool, when Ed stopped me. "Why don't you come backstage and hang with us for a while. I think Randy would get a kick of this." Of course, how could I say no to that offer. I went backstage (first time of many, as The Cabooze became almost a second home not long after) and sure enough, there was Randy. "Randy, I found this kid trying to sneak in!" Randy gave a faked shocked look on his face. From there, Randy sat down and told me stories, many quick stories.. about his life, his spiritual side ("Without something to believe in, life is useless. Life itself is it's own blessing."), Jimi Hendrix, and more, for a good 20 minutes.

I pulled out my 2nd doobie and offered to smoke the band up. "Thank you for the offer, but no thanks. Save it for the show, and some other good fans." They then said it was time to eat (Randy says 'The Riverside Cafe', which was the greatest vegan folkrock coffeehouse at the time, I went there all the time back then), rehearse a bit, and such, and sent me on my way with grins on all our faces. I did friend an old hippie couple and we lit doobie #2 right before the show began and quickly ran inside in perfect timing. The show, to me, was just amazing. I finally saw them! It was my first, and very unf., the last time. I still remember everything. Nothing has changed. If anything, I am even a bigger Spirit fan now than then. Back then, I only knew some of their material from a friends record collection and the radio show, 'Flashback'

The Cabooze records nearly every band from the SBD. They aren't professial done, but more on the fly and raw. However, they are very enjoyable, if you are lucky enough to find them. But, VERY VERY few recordings make it out and into circulation. It's a major pity, because of so much great music they had. I saw Koko Taylor there every few months, plus Willie Dixon, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, Junior Wells, Hot Tuna, John Mayall, Dickie Betts, etc. etc. etc. I felt, and still feel, very lucky this one made it out to the public. Wish I could say the same about all the rest of the shows. Someone is sitting on some seriously amazing shows, and doesn't share them with anyone.
